This was also the year that Japan joined Institute for International Cooper the Colombo Plan and made the transition from an aid- JICA Hiroo receiving nation to an aid-giving nation. “10 Years of JICA JICA Chugoku” represents just part of more than 50 years of our JICA Komagane activities. The following shows a brief history of JICA JICA Hokuriku Chugoku. Thanks are once again expressed to all the JICA Chubu people who have given their support over more than half a JICA century. 1954, March Establishment of International Cooperation Associations in Hiroshima and Tottori Prefectures. Followed by establishment in Okayama Prefecture in April, in October and Shimane Prefecture in November.

1962, June Establishment of the Overseas Technical Cooperation Agency (OCTA). Centralization of the government’s technical cooperation programs.

1963, July Establishment of the Japan Emigration Agency (JEMIS), succeeding the work of the Japan Federation of International Cooperation Associations.

1964, July Opening of JEMIS regional offices in prefectures.

1973, October Establishment of the JEMIS Hiroshima Branch, in charge of Hiroshima, Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures. Okayama and Tottori Prefectures were under the branch. Also, a resident officer office was established in Yamaguchi. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

1974, August Establishment of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JEMIS Hiroshima became JICA Hiroshima.

1978, September Closure of the resident officer office in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

1979, July Jurisdiction of JICA Hiroshima extended to include Tottori and Okayama Prefectures and thus cover the five prefectures of Chugoku.

1980, April Hiroshima Branch was renamed as Chugoku Branch.

1996, October Closure of Chugoku Branch and establishment of Chugoku International Center.

1997, January Completion of Hiroshima International Plaza - a joint facility of JICA and Hiroshima Prefecture in Hiroshima Central Science Park in Kagamiyama, City.

1997, February Transfer of Chugoku International Center to Hiroshima International Plaza.

2003, October JICA become an independent administrative agency.
