別紙2 Regular Exhibition "History of Japanese Literature Based on Books" Materials List, Part I 名 称 名称ふりがな 解 説 I Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく (Ancient Times) While Japanese history often uses the term "kodai" to mean ancient times, the history of literature generally calls the times before the Heian period "jodai." Its beginning is uncertain, but its end is defined as the end of the 8th century. Politically, the state had progressed to unity and completion of its regime during this period. From the perspective of literature, this period was the time when Japanese people—who had not had characters for writing—first met kanji or Chinese characters and attempted various ways to express themselves using kanji. Literature in the period primarily when the capital was at Yamato before it was transferred to Heian-kyo in 794. While the categories range from myths to legends, songs, waka or Japanese poetry, Chinese poetry, Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく biographies, histories and topographies, there were not so many works as a whole. Every extant work containing ancient contents was actually compiled into a book in the Nara period (710–794). Some of those books were established against the background of the regime establishment of the state. Kojiki was established in 712. O no Yasumaro composed this book by writing down the ancient history inherited by Hieda no Are. Kojiki contains the history from the age of the gods to the reign of Empress Suiko (reign: 593–629). Nihon Shoki was established in 720 through a compilation carried out by Prince Myths and History しんわ・れきし Toneri. -
Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction

Keller Kimbrough Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction Late-medieval Japanese fiction contains numerous accounts of lay and monastic travelers to the Pure Land and other extra-human realms. In many cases, the “tourists” are granted guided tours, after which they are returned to the mun- dane world in order to tell of their unusual experiences. This article explores several of these stories from around the sixteenth century, including, most prominently, Fuji no hitoana sōshi, Tengu no dairi, and a section of Seiganji engi. I discuss the plots and conventions of these and other narratives, most of which appear to be based upon earlier oral tales employed in preaching and fund-raising, in order to illuminate their implications for our understanding of Pure Land-oriented Buddhism in late-medieval Japan. I also seek to demon- strate the diversity and subjectivity of Pure Land religious experience, and the sometimes startling gap between orthodox doctrinal and popular vernacular representations of Pure Land practices and beliefs. keywords: otogizōshi – jisha engi – shaji engi – Fuji no hitoana sōshi – Bishamon no honji – Tengu no dairi – Seiganji engi – hell – travel R. It is as old as written history and survives into modem times. Victims appear as heroes in Buddhist, Shinto, and Shinto-Buddhist cults and in numer- ous works of Japanese literature, theater and the arts. In a number of articles I have pub- lished on this subject,' I tried to offer a religious interpretation, emphasizing the need to placate political victims in order to safeguard the state from their wrath. Unappeased political victims were believed to seek revenge by harming the living, causing natural calamities, provoking social discord, jeopardizing the national welfare. Beginning in the tenth century, such placation took on a national importance. Elsewhere I have tried to demonstrate that the cult of political victims forced political leaders to worship their for- mer enemies in a cult providing the religious legitimization, that is, the mainstay of their power.' The reason for this was, as I demonstrated, the attempt leaders made to control natural forces through the worship of spirits believed to influence them. -

For more information visit www.intechopen.com Chapter Traditional Chinese Medicine: From Aqueous Extracts to Therapeutic Formulae Jinfan Wang, Astrid Sasse and Helen Sheridan Abstract Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the most established systems of medicine in the world. The therapeutic formulae used in TCM are frequently derived from aqueous decoctions of single plants or complex multicomponent formulae. There are aspects of plant cultivation and preparation of decoction pieces that are unique to TCM. These include Daodi cultivation, which is associated with high quality medicinal plant material that is grown in a defined geographical area, and Paozhi processing where the decoction pieces can be treated with excipients and are processed, which may fundamentally change the nature of the chemical metabolites. Therefore, a single plant part, processed in a variety of different ways, can each create a unique medicine. The quality of TCM materials, their safety and therapeutic efficacy are of critical importance. The application of metabolomic and chemometric techniques to these complex and multicomponent medicines is of interest to understand the interrelationships between composition, synergy and therapeutic activity. -

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

As a multifaceted performance art and genre of literature, Noh is understood as having rich and diverse religious influences, but is often studied as a predominantly artistic and literary form that moved away from its religious/ritual origin. This study aims to recapture some of the Noh’s religious aura and reclaim its religious efficacy, by exploring the ways in which the art and performance of Noh contributed to broader religious contexts of medieval Japan. Chapter One, the Introduction, provides the background necessary to establish the context for analyzing a selection of Noh plays which serve as case studies of Noh’s religious and ritual functioning. Historical and cultural context of Noh for this study is set up as a medieval Japanese world view, which is an enchanted world with blurred boundaries between the visible and invisible world, human and non-human, sentient and non-sentient, enlightened and conditioned. The introduction traces the religious and ritual origins of Noh theater, and establishes the characteristics of the genre that make it possible for Noh to be offered up as an alternative to the mainstream ritual, and proposes an analysis of this ritual through dynamic and evolving schemes of ritualization and mythmaking, rather than ritual as a superimposed structure. -
Ise-Shima National Park Lies on the Shima Peninsula, Located in the Center of Mie Prefecture in Western Japan
A scared landscape featuring the historical site of Ise Jingu Grand Shrine, as well as a picturesque coastal route and bountiful seascape 12 Ise-Shima Ise-Shima National Park lies on the Shima Peninsula, located in the center of Mie prefecture in Western Japan. Ise-Shima National Park includes the municipalities of Ise, Toba, Shima, and Minami-Ise, occupying a vast area of National Park nearly 60,000 hectares. The park is broadly divided into two areas: the inland area which is home to Ise Jingu and its surrounding forests; and the coastal area which is characterized by an archipelagic landscape with intricate ria coasts. The interaction between people and nature is very profound in the region, and the essence of this relationship can be observed in the ancient tradition of ama, female diver, fishing, among other traditional cultural practices that have developed around Ise Jingu over the millennia. The wisdom to enjoy the bounties of nature in a sustainable manner is figured prominently in Ise Jinguʼs Shikinen Sengu, a ritual held once every 20 years whereby the shrine is rebuilt in its entirety. The region has a long history of providing seafood to the Imperial Court and Ise Jingu, and the Manyoshu (Japanʼs oldest poetry compilation) refers to the region as Miketsu Kuni or the "land of divine off erings". Thus, the region boasts a rich marine environment home to diverse aquatic life, including Japanese spiny lobster, abalones, turban shells, oysters, tunas, red sea breams, and various types of seaweed. The Kuroshio sea current has blessed the region with a warm climate, which has led to the development of Ise Jinguʼs lush forest and dense evergreen forests that cling to the foothills of the mountainous regions. -

Vol XII.II Mar-Avr 2012 Oni (鬼) - Japanese Demons In the seventh episode of Dreams (1990) by Akira Kurosawa, “Weeping Demons,” we are transported to a mountain landscape infested with giant dandelion flowers, in which demons, or oni, are wailing over the pain coming from their horns. Within Kurosawa’s nightmare of a doomed world of mutants surviving a nuclear catastrophe, we can observe a faithful portraiture of the oni character popular in Japanese folklore: a gruesome, frightening demon emerging from Hell’s abyss. In the movie, oni devour each other starting with the lower-ranked oni with only one horn, a metaphor depicting a dehumanized society where the strongest rule over the weakest. Typically, oni have either one or several horns protruding from their scalp. Some have a third eye in the center of their forehead, and they often make a hideous grimace from ear to ear and showing their conspicuous teeth. Their skin is usually red, black, blue, or yellow and they wear only a loincloth of tiger Netsuke of an oni in agony after skin. Although oni are predominantly male, female oni can be as terrifying, as being showered with soybeans. we will see. 19th century. In Chinese, the ideogram 鬼 (ki) designate the soul of a deceased person, a ghost, but in Japanese it is read as oni, or demon, but also sometimes as mono, an indwelling spirit or kami. The Encyclopedia of Shinto published by Kokugakuin University in Tokyo, distinguishes 3 type of oni: the wicked spirits or evil kami, the oni as foreigners or strangers, also considered demons, and the oni as good kami.The last type is an oni invoked to chase away evil spirits. -

Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective.
