The Sun and Her Stars: Salka Viertel and Hitler’S Exiles in the Golden Age of Hollywood The Sun and Her Stars: Salka Viertel and Hitler’s Exiles in the Golden Age of Hollywood A Hollywood history, A refugee tale. A story of war, Hitler, and the Holocaust. A love letter to Los Angeles. Sound intriguing? Come hear author Donna Rifkind discuss her new book about the inspiring Los Angeles life of a heroic woman: a mother of three and an avant-garde artist who managed to thrive within the studio system, an immigrant turned proud American who fought against hate with kindness and compassion. The life of Salka Viertel, an actress turned screenwriter during Hollywood’s Golden Age, who connects Weimar with the Palisades, Tinseltown fantasy with worldwide tragedy. Arriving in Hollywood from Berlin with her director husband in 1928, Salka quickly became best friends with Greta Garbo and the writer of five of her films for MGM. As the threat of Nazi domination grew in Europe, Salka spearheaded the cause of refugees, arranging affidavits and studio jobs for Jews and anti-fascists seeking escape to America. Every week at her house on Mabery Road in Santa Monica Canyon, continental celebrities mixed with film folk: Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Arnold Schoenberg, Bertolt Brecht and hundreds of others. With Salka's help, these refugees became Hitler's gift to America, permanently enhancing its sophistication. Monday, May 13, 2019 7 PM Theatre Palisades 941 Temescal Canyon Road, Pacific Palisades Free parking at the theater and along Temescal Canyon Rd. Admission is free – Refreshments follow the program. Donna Rifkind, an L.A. native, is a longtime book reviewer for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and many other publications. ABSTRACT Title of Document: FROM THE BELLY OF THE HUAC: THE RED PROBES OF HOLLYWOOD, 1947-1952 Jack D. Meeks, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Dr. Maurine Beasley, Journalism The House Un-American Activities Committee, popularly known as the HUAC, conducted two investigations of the movie industry, in 1947 and again in 1951-1952. The goal was to determine the extent of communist infiltration in Hollywood and whether communist propaganda had made it into American movies. The spotlight that the HUAC shone on Tinsel Town led to the blacklisting of approximately 300 Hollywood professionals. This, along with the HUAC’s insistence that witnesses testifying under oath identify others that they knew to be communists, contributed to the Committee’s notoriety. Until now, historians have concentrated on offering accounts of the HUAC’s practice of naming names, its scrutiny of movies for propaganda, and its intervention in Hollywood union disputes. The HUAC’s sealed files were first opened to scholars in 2001. This study is the first to draw extensively on these newly available documents in an effort to reevaluate the HUAC’s Hollywood probes. This study assesses four areas in which the new evidence indicates significant, fresh findings. First, a detailed analysis of the Committee’s investigatory methods reveals that most of the HUAC’s information came from a careful, on-going analysis of the communist press, rather than techniques such as surveillance, wiretaps and other cloak and dagger activities. Second, the evidence shows the crucial role played by two brothers, both German communists living as refugees in America during World War II, in motivating the Committee to launch its first Hollywood probe.

  • Schen Praktiken Der Familie Viertel
Katharina Prager „Amerika ist trotz allem grossartig“ – Die transkulturellen Leben und autobiographi- schen Praktiken der Familie Viertel Abstract: “America is awesome, in spite of everything”: The transcultural lives and autobiographical practices of the Viertel family. The Viertel family en- gaged in diverse biographical practices. Salka Viertel was an actress and screenwriter; her husband, Berthold Viertel, was a writer and director, while their son, Peter, was also a writer. They are one of very few (intellectual) fam- ilies in which three members from two different generations have bequeathed their autobiographies. Predetermined by gender, age, socialisation and his- torical context, their autobiographies reveal very different emphases regard- ing how events in family life can take on quite different meanings when jux- taposed against the backdrop of contemporary world history. The transfor- mations and limitations of concepts such as migration and exile become apparent when we realise that constant mobility was, for example, part of everyday life in the multinational Habsburg Empire, especially in the theatre and film business. In contrast, their migration to the USA in 1928 was trans- formed into ‘exile’ when the National Socialists rose to power. Whereas the two male family members adhered, on the whole, to traditional masculinities and an autobiographical master narrative, Salka Viertel found a ‘relational’ and ‘transcultural form’ for the writing of her autobiography. Keywords: Family, Gender, Migration, Exile, Transcultural

  • The Intersection of Gender, Religion, and Culture in Nineteenth-Century
THE INTERSECTION OF GENDER, RELIGION, AND CULTURE IN NINETEENTH‐ CENTURY GERMANIC SALONS Jennifer Lauren Psujek A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August: 2010 Committee: Mary Natvig, Advisor Eftychia Papanikolaou ii ABSTRACT Mary Natvig, Advisor Modern salons began as gatherings for conversation among the French aristocracy in the seventeenth century. By the eighteenth century it had become a bourgeois tradition, with its importance cumulating in the French Revolution. The French salon moved to Germany and Austria in the late eighteenth century, however, its heyday in those lands was in the nineteenth century. The salon became a place where women in both France and the Germanic lands could gain an education and power. What has yet to be discussed in scholarship is the extent to which the salon in the Germanic lands moved away from its French roots and Became its own unique tradition. First, purely musical salons began during the Biedermeier period, as will be seen when examining the German salons of Sara Levy, Amalie Beer, Lea Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn‐Hensel, and Clara Wieck‐Schumann. Second, Germany and Austria saw the first salons hosted by Jewish women. This thesis highlights those of Henriette Herz, Rahel Levin‐Varnhagen, Fanny von Arnstein, Sara Levy, Amalie Beer, Lea Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn‐Hensel, Berta Zuckerkandl, and Salka Viertel. Finally, to demonstrate the benefits of Germanic salon culture, the last chapter focuses on Johanna Kinkel’s involvement with the Berlin salon tradition. Kinkel was a composer, writer, and political activist.

  • No Small Parts ADINA HOFFMAN
No Small Parts ADINA HOFFMAN The Kindness of Strangers, by Salka Viertel, New York Review Books Classics. ~HE TOOK Bertholt Brecht's cash-strapped wife, IIelli, fruit-and- vegetable shopping at Los Angeles's Grand Central Market. She swam in the Pacific with Sergei Eisenstein and a few of his Soviet cinematic comrades. She served as scriptwriter, acting coach, and trusted all- around protector to her best friend, Greta Garbo. She poured Aldous Huxley and his wife glasses of sherry, then listened to him talk about cheese.... Although her name is little mentioned today, and her last- ing contribution has a vaporous quality (by virtue of both her modesty and the behind-the-scenes, often unspoken nature of what she tend- ed to be up to), Salka Viertel was perhaps the most important, and ubiquitous, "minor character of a certain eminent-6migr6-packed Southern Californian moment. Calling her "minor" isn't to underestimate the major role she played in this context. Whether or not she's remembered today, all who knew her attest that over the course of the three decades she spent welcoming guests to her gracious, honeysuckle- and rose-encircled seaside house in Santa Monica, Viertel altered many lives. It's not unreasonable to say that in doing so she also helped to change the course of twentieth-century culture. This she did, not through a single bold and memorable gesture but in a thousand and one microscop- ic ways, by encouraging-and/or working with, advising, promoting, and playing counselor, translator, bartender, gatekeeper, professional matchmaker, intimate to-a boggling array of some of the era's most brilliant, uprooted people.
