Sound intriguing? Come hear author Donna Rifkind discuss her new book about the inspiring Los Angeles life of a heroic woman: a mother of three and an avant-garde artist who managed to thrive within the studio system, an immigrant turned proud American who fought against hate with kindness and compassion. The life of Salka Viertel, an actress turned screenwriter during Hollywood’s Golden Age, who connects Weimar with the Palisades, Tinseltown fantasy with worldwide tragedy. Arriving in Hollywood from Berlin with her director husband in 1928, Salka quickly became best friends with Greta Garbo and the writer of five of her films for MGM. As the threat of Nazi domination grew in Europe, Salka spearheaded the cause of refugees, arranging affidavits and studio jobs for Jews and anti-fascists seeking escape to America. Every week at her house on Mabery Road in Santa Monica Canyon, continental celebrities mixed with film folk: Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Arnold Schoenberg, Bertolt Brecht and hundreds of others.
