  • Knee-Fiddles in Poland: Multidimensional Bridging of Paradigms
Knee-Fiddles in Poland: Multidimensional Bridging of Paradigms Ewa Dahlig-Turek Abstract: Knee-fiddles, i.e., bowed chordophones played in the vertical position, are an extinct group of musical instruments existing in the past in the Polish territory, known only from the few iconographic sources from the 17th and 19th century. Their peculiarity lies in the technique of shortening the strings – with the fingernails, and not with the fingertips. Modern attempts to reactivate the extinct tradition by introducing knee-fiddles to musical practice required several steps, from the reconstruction of the instruments to proposing a performance technique and repertoire. The process of reconstructing knee-fiddles and their respective performance practice turned out to be a multi-dimensional fusion of paradigms leading to the bridging of seemingly unconnected phenomena of different times (instrument), cultures (performance technique) or genres (repertoire): (1) historical fiddle-making paradigms have been converted into present-day folk fiddle construction for more effective playing (in terms of ergonomy and sound), (2) playing technique has been based on paradigms borrowed from distant cultures (in the absence of the local ones), (3) the repertoire has been created by overlapping paradigms of folk music and popular music in order to produce a repertoire acceptable for today’s listeners. Key words: chordophones, knee-fiddles, Polish folk music, fingernail technique. For more than a decade, we have been witnessing in Poland a strong activity of the “folky”1 music scene. By this term I understand music located at the intersection of folk music (usually Polish or from neighboring countries) and various genres of popular music.

  • Analysis and Interpretation of Material from the Collection of Musical Instruments in Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb
željka Petrović Osmak UDK 069.5:781.7](497.521.2) Etnografski muzej Zagreb Professional paper Zagreb Received: March 15, 2011 Croatia Accepted: March 30, 2011 [email protected] Analysis and Interpretation of Material from the Collection of Musical Instruments in Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb This paper presents a brief historical overview of the collection of musical instru- ments in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb, and reviews its structure according to the type of musical instruments, the location and time in which the largest num- ber of musical instruments were collected. The analysis of museum materials related to musical instruments opens an insight into the criteria by which the museum items have been collected. Keywords: Ethnographic Museum Zagreb collection of musical instru- ments, Ethnographic Museum Occurrence of ethnographic museums in Europe and the emergence and develop- ment of ethnology and anthropology as sciences has contributed to the “heightened interest in traditional culture that has been preserved in the villages, which was un- til then considered worthless” (Maroević, 1993: 40). Encouraged by the social and artistic direction which reached its peak in mid-19th century, and whose basic para- digm included the development and emphasis on love for the people’s language and history1 , this kind of museums appears after 1875, when the strengthening of indus- trialization and urbanization caused a rapid deterioration of the villages and when the values of rural culture started to get consciously incorporated into the process of creating a national culture (ibid.). Therefore, the specific characteristic of ethno- graphic museums is that they bring in the material culture, without the extraordi- nary artistic, historical or technological features, as evidence of life, thus opening up new and unexpected resources along with new methodological issues (ibid.).

Finnish Institute at Athens & Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies, University of Athens http://conf2010.turkmas.uoa.gr/ ABSTRACTS BY AUTHOR Andrikos, Nikos Department of Popular and Traditional Music, Technological Educational Institute of Epirus ‘Polichronismoi’ and Laudatory Canticles to the Sultan Abdülhamit II Set to Music by Ecclesiastical Composers The composition of Polichronismoi, laudatory canticles, as well as of Odes, which refer to specific moments of the life of the Sultan (the ascent to the throne and the crowning, the official visits, the return from Europe etc), constitutes a truly interesting musical and historical phenomenon for the Ecclesiastical music production of the late 19th century. This trend reaches its peak during the rule of Sultan Abdülhamit II (1876-1909) to whom almost the entirety of these works are dedicated. The intensification of this historical phenomenon coincides historically with the active involvement of the Greek element of the Empire, in the most interventionist way, in the political, social and diplomatic affairs of the government, as well as with the appearance of the ideological model of “Greek-Ottomanism”. The latter, among other things, suggested an alternative existence of the Ottoman Empire which included the substantial participation of the Ottoman- Greeks in the administrative, bureaucratic and economic fields. Ecclesiastical composers from the Ottoman capital as well as from the periphery used the new “Parasemantic” notation system and composed Polichronismoi in Turkish, as well as chants that were rich in melodic and rhythmical content and referred morphological to the Eastern urban modal system. These compositions, which are found in printed and hand written collections of the time, were recorded in the reformed notation system of Chrisanthos and as far as style and structure are concerned, they directly referred to aesthetic models that derived from the ideological model of the Ottoman Romanticism.

Byzantine music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 4/17/15 11:43 AM Byzantine music From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Byzantine music (Modern Greek: Βυζαντινή μουσική), in a narrow sense, is the music of the Byzantine Empire. Music of Greece Originally it consisted of songs and hymns composed to Greek texts used for courtly ceremonials, during festivals, or as paraliturgical and liturgical music. The ecclesiastical forms of Byzantine music are the best known forms today, because different Orthodox traditions still identify with the heritage of Byzantine music, when their cantors sing monodic chant out of the traditional chant books like sticherarion which in fact consisted of five books, and the heirmologion. Byzantine music did not disappear after the fall of Constantinople. Its traditions continued under the Patriarchate of Constantinople which was annexed by the Islamic Ottoman ruler Sultan Mehmed II in 1454, and granted administrative responsibilities over all Orthodox Christians. During the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, burgeoning splinter nations in the Balkans declared autonomy or "autocephaly" against the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The new self-declared patriarchates were independent nations defined by their religion. In this context, Christian religious chant General topics practiced in the Ottoman empire, Bulgaria and Greece Ancient music · Byzantine music · Opera · Greek among other nations, was based on the historical roots of musical system · Greek musical instruments · Greek the art tracing back to

  • Forms of Instruments in Collective Memory: the Example of Kemençe
IJASOS- International E-Journal of Advances in Social Sciences, Vol.II, Issue 5, August 2016 FORMS OF INSTRUMENTS IN COLLECTIVE MEMORY: THE EXAMPLE OF KEMENÇE Gözde Çolakoğlu Sarı Assoc. Prof. Dr., Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, [email protected] Abstract Instruments play a significant role in establishing peoples‟ music at cultural memory and shapes of these instruments hold an important place in cultural memory. For instance, Eastern Black Sea Region is associated with kemençe and Aegean region with sipsi. The immediate vision that comes to memory is that of a tar when Azerbaijan is mentioned, or it is bagpipes for Scotland. When we discuss armudî kemençe (pear shaped kemençe), one of our instruments, which make good examples for our subject, we see that the same form and structure is found in the musical memories of neighbouring geographical regions, under various different names. Instruments, which are referred to as lyra in Greece and Aegean Islands, as lyrica in Croatia, as gadulka in Bulgaria, in Turkey, as kemençe in art music circles, and as tırnak kemane in Kastamonu and its environs, and which have established themselves under these names at memories in their respective territories, have similar traits in terms of performance and morphological features, and are evidential examples of collective music memory. But individuals living in these societies use the name of instrument, what they call in their region while talking about the music instrument. In this paper, forms of instruments, which have established themselves at collective memory, is analyzed through the example of kemençe, the variations of the instrument found in the Balkans and in Anatolia, and their place in collective memories will be discussed in comparison.

It turned out that both components of this thesis are faulty and that the in/visibility of the women players depends on (ethno)musico-logical and social canons. Their invisibility in ethnomusicology has been an outcome of the ethnomusicological limitation to folk music, its products and its most prominent representatives. Women players' positions as members of a family and as participants in national-integrating and modernizing processes during the second half of 19th and the first half of 20th century made it possible for their musicianship to prevail over their gender. These were also the positions which women players shared with men players. The remaining women's positions were based precisely on certain stereotypes on women (from the woman player as a member of so-called fairer sex, to the woman player as a shameless woman, and the reverse of the stereotype in the woman player as a mannish woman) or on the (self)negation of serious musicianship (the woman player as a substitute for an absent man player, and the woman player of handy and substitute instruments).
