  • The Trophic Ecology of Wolves and Their Predatory Role in Ungulate Communities of Forest Ecosystems in Europe
Acta Theriologica 40 (4): 335-386,1095, REVIEW PL ISSN 0001-7051 The trophic ecology of wolves and their predatory role in ungulate communities of forest ecosystems in Europe Henryk OKARMA Okarma H. 1995. The trophic ecology of wolves and their predatory role in ungulate communities of forest ecosystems in Europe. Acta Theriologica 40: 335-386. Predation by wolves Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758 in ungulate communities in Europe, with special reference to the multi-species system of Białowieża Primeval Forest (Poland/Belarus), was assessed on the basis results of original research and literature. In historical times (post-glacial period), the geographical range of the wolf and most ungulate species in Europe decreased considerably. Community richness of ungulates and potential prey for wolves, decreased over most of the continent from 5-6 species to 2-3 species. The wolf is typically an opportunistic predator with a highly diverse diet; however, cervids are its preferred prey. Red deer Ceruus elaphus are positively selected from ungulate communities in all localities, moose Alces alces are the major prey only where middle-sized species are scarce. Roe deer Capreolus capreolus are locally preyed on intensively, especially where they have high density, co-exist mainly with moose or wild boar Sus scrofa, and red deer is scarce or absent. Wild boar are generally avoided, except in a few locations; and European bison Bison bonasus are not preyed upon by wolves. Wolf predation contributes substantially to the total natural mortality of ungulates in Europe: 42.5% for red deer, 34.5% for moose, 25.7% for roe der, and only 16% for wild boar.

А. И. Герцена. Avian Ecol. Behav. 15, 2009: 31-46. Long-term arrival trends of 54 avian species to Barguzinsky Nature Reserve in the northeastern Baikal area Alexander A. Ananin1 & Leonid V. Sokolov2 Abstract: Ananin, A.A. & Sokolov L.V. (2009): Long-term arrival trends of 54 avian species to Barguzinsky Nature Reserve in the northeastern Baikal area. Avian Ecol. Behav. 15: 31-46. We analysed phenological observations on spring arrival of 54 avian species to Barguzinsky Nature Reserve in 1938-2001. Twenty-eight species (52%) showed a trend towards earlier ar- rival, 14 species (26%) showed a trend towards later arrival. In 12 species (22%) the timing of spring arrival did not change. Most avian species that started to arrive earlier were passerines (65% of species). Later arrival was mainly recorded in waterfowl and birds of prey. Earlier ar- rival recorded in roughly one-half of the species analysed, is probably due to climate warming recorded in the study region in the late 20th century. These species may be treated as pheno- logical indicators illustrating climate change in the northeastern Baikal area. • Organochlorine Pesticides, Pcbs, and Mercury in Ospreypandion Haliaetus Eggs from the Upper Volga River, Russia
Chancellor, R.D., B.-U. Meyburg & J.J. Ferrero eds. 1998 Holarctic Birds of Prey ADENEX-WWGBP Organochlorine Pesticides, PCBs, and Mercury in Osprey Pandion haliaetus eggs from the Upper Volga River, Russia Charles J. Henny, Vladimir M. Galushin and Andrey V. Kuznetsov ABSTRACT The Osprey population associated with Darwin Nature Reserve and the Rybinsk Reservoir increased from only a few pairs prior to the creation of the reservoir in the late 1940s, to about 45-50 pairs in 1994. Productivity rates were excellent in 1988 and 1989 (1.38 young/occupied nest), but eXtremely low in 1987 (0.47 young/occupied nest). A chemical spill into the Volga River in early 1987 resulted in a massive fish kill, which was believed responsible for low production that year. With the eXception of the year of the chemical spill and 1992 (the year an egg was collected from 10 of 11 nests studied), production was comparable to rates observed in stable or increasing populations in Byelorussia, Finland, and Sweden. The p.p'-DDE (DDE), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and mercury concentrations from eggs collected in 1992 were below known effect levels and eggshell thickness showed only 6.3% thinning -an amount not associated with reproductive problems. INTRODUCTION At the World Conference on Birds of Prey, Galushin (1977) noted that it had been one decade since birds of prey became legally protected in the U.S.S.R. in 1964. There was some evidence of a continued decline in the Osprey which is included in Red Data Book of the Russian Federation (1983).

By quantity of registered nests since 1950 (literatue and own data) in Kyzyl-Kumy (including floods of Amu-Daria and Nuratau ridge) 33 nests were found. On the rest territory trustworthy only 4 nests were studied. Indices of density in breeding places - 0,5-4,4 pairs/100 sq. km. Total in republic, probably, 100-120 pairs are breeding. Saker part - 5.0-5,2% of total raptor numbers. Abdunazarov, B.B. 1990. • Aapa Mire on the Southern Limit: a Case Study in Vologda Region (North-Western Russia)
Aapa mire on the southern limit: A case study in Vologda Region (north-western Russia) S.A. Kutenkov1 and D.A. Philippov2 1Institute of Biology of Karelian Research Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, Petrozavodsk, Russian Federation 2Papanin Institute for Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences, Borok, Russian Federation _______________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY The aim of the research was to carry out a multidisciplinary study of a mire possessing a ribbed pattern typical for aapa mires and yet situated in the Vologda Region of Russia, which is farther south than the supposed southern limit of aapa mire distribution. The study shows that the mire lies in its own basin while being part of a complex mire system. Its microtopography is represented by three well-defined elements, namely strings, lawns and flarks, which condition the mosaic structure of the vegetative cover. In terms of flora and vegetation composition, this mire is very similar to Fennoscandian rich aapa mires although it lacks a number of typical western species. Dense, well-developed tree stands on strings are prominent features of this mire. The peat deposit is of fen (predominantly swamp) type. The stratigraphy of the peat deposit demonstrates its secondary nature and the young age of the strings. Dendrochronology showed that the phase of active development of the tree stand began about 200 years ago. Thus, the mire fully corresponds to the concept of an aapa mire, on the basis of (1) characteristic topography; (2) heterotrophic vegetation typical of aapa mires; and (3) secondary nature of the strings and their young age. The studied mire provides habitat for several rare species of vascular plants and mosses, and thus requires protection.
