IN MEMORIUM - DAVID GRAHAM DU BOIS

With regret we inform you that our cousin David Graham Du Bois passed away on Friday, Jan. 28 in Amherst, Massachusetts. David had been in failing health for some time. The cause of his death was organ failure. Odell Murry, who as close to him as family, is in charge of arranging David's affairs. The Graham-Morris family members remember with great delight the warm and happy fellowship we had with David at our August 1999 Family Reunion in Huntington Beach. David spoke many times of his pleasure in seeing his cousins and getting acquainted with the many members of the younger generations of our family while he was on the West Coast. David gave a stirring speech about his life journey at the final luncheon event on August 20, 1999. He talked about the quest of his mother, Shirley Graham Du Bois, of W. E. B. Du Bois, and his own efforts to help bring about peace and justice to peoples of the world. He will be missed.

DAVID GRAHAM DU BOIS DONATES VOLUMES TO CAIRO UNIVERSITY

Cousin David Du Bois donated his library of some 900 volumes on African-American and African Life and Culture to Cairo University . The University is for the first time setting up an American Studies Department.

David explained the reason for his donation:

"The real significance of my donation of books to the newly created American Studies Department at Cairo University is the contents and quality of the majority of the volumes. Normally Cairo University will rely on U.S. publishers and educational bodies to supply it's library for the new Department. We are all aware of the extent to which these institutions have ignored, distorted and spread falsehoods about our role in the making of America . My collection of books in the main challenge this long-standing practice, and attempt to tell the truth. The decision of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture to publish an Arabic language edition of Du Bois' on my initiative encouraged me to take this action."

SADIE NORRELL MEMORIAL SERVICE

Cousin Sadie Thomas Norrell died on Oct. 13 after several months of rapid decline in health. She had a form of leukemia and eventually developed cancer of the kidney and liver.

Her memorial service on Thursday, Oct. 21st was very moving. It was held in a banquet room at the beautiful Carson Community Center in the heart of Carson Civic Center , with tables complete with beautiful floral centerpieces. A Service of Celebration was held. There were programs, souvenir "sweets" wrapped and tied with ribbons, and music. The Eulogy was given by Father Tony Gonzales, pastor of St. Francis X. Cabrini Church. Edinboro recited two poems he wrote for Sadie. A video presentation of photos of Sadie from her childhood was shown. The sit-down luncheon followed.

There were many testimonials at the service from her colleagues, friends, and former students. Son Kevin and family and daughter Tanya and husband, along with many family members. Ed seems to be holding up well with lots of support from friends.

Please keep the family in prayer.

My Little House mate

My little puppy, Lilli Belle, whom I adopted June 15th, is an adorable and wonderful companion. Lilli is a Bichon Frise. They are known for their affection, mild temperament, and happy spirit. Lilli is now 10 months old, weighs 13 pounds, and is princess of the house! She is developing a wonderful personality: she is smart, loving, resourceful, and playful - but also with a mind of her own. On October 30 she received her certificate from puppy kindergarten, and she also received the Miss Congeniality award! Lilli is now completing additional training for Canine Good Citizen. The CGC certification is for becoming a therapy dog. Only dogs that are well-behaved, good- natured, and people-friendly can get this certification. Lilli is an excellent candidate because she is confident, and of course her looks are so appealing.
