Commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Limited Clearwater Court Vastern Road Reading RG1 8DB CROSSNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS NATURE RESERVE & SOUTHERN MARSH AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SURVEY Report number: CPA18054 JULY 2019 Prepared by Colin Plant Associates (UK) Consultant Entomologists 30a Alexandra Rd London N8 0PP 1 1 INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY 1.1 Introduction and background 1.1.1 On 30th May 2018 Colin Plant Associates (UK) were commissioned by Biodiversity Team Manager, Karen Sutton on behalf of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. to undertake aquatic invertebrate sampling at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Erith Marshes, Kent. This survey was to mirror the locations and methodology of a previous survey undertaken during autumn 2016 and spring 2017. Colin Plant Associates also undertook the aquatic invertebrate sampling of this previous survey. 1.1.2 The 2016-17 aquatic survey was commissioned with the primary objective of establishing a baseline aquatic invertebrate species inventory and to determine the quality of the aquatic habitats present across both the Nature Reserve and Southern Marsh areas of the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. The surveyors were asked to sample at twenty-four, pre-selected sample station locations, twelve in each area. Aquatic Coleoptera and Heteroptera (beetles and true bugs) were selected as target groups. A report of the previous survey was submitted in Sept 2017 (Plant 2017). 1.1.3 During December 2017 a large-scale pollution event took place and untreated sewage escaped into a section of the Crossness Nature Reserve. The primary point of egress was Nature Reserve Sample Station 1 (NR1) though because of the connectivity of much of the waterbody network on the marsh other areas were affected. -

Stjepan Krčmar U ovom radu je istražen kvalitativni sastav entomof aune na četiri močvarna staništa od me đunarodnog značenja u Republici Hrvatskoj. To su Park prirode Kopački rit, Park prirode Lonjsko polje, Delta rijeke Neretve i Crna Mlaka. Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%. -

Aquatic systems are considered a main source of essential long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated 25 fatty acids (PUFA), which are preferentially synthesized by microalgae and transferred 26 along food chains to terrestrial consumers. Emerging aquatic insects comprise a 27 significant part of this transfer of the essential PUFA from water to land. Quantitative 28 data on PUFA content and composition are available mainly for rheophilic insects while 29 taxa that are characteristic of wetlands and stagnant water bodies, such as aquatic 30 Heteroptera, remain relatively unstudied. -

Macan (1954) suggests that the Corixidae is an attractive family for ecological studies because most of the species (nearly 40 in the UK) are common and widely distributed but have restricted habitats. The abiotic and biotic habitat characteristics that influence water bug distributions are complex, involving water chemistry, competition and predation among others. Macan (1938) examined the relationship between corixids and the amount of organic material present in the sediment of lakes and ponds in the Lake District and showed some species occurred only in oligotrophic habitats while others were confined to later successional, eutrophic habitats with higher levels of organic material. Looking at this association from a different point of view, Popham (1943) suggested that the background colour of different habitats influenced distribution with lighter coloured species in low organic matter habitats and vice versa . Savage (1982, 1990) investigated the correlation between corixid distribution and the conductivity of water bodies, conductivity being a measure of the concentration of dissolved ions. This varies widely in freshwater habitats along the oligotrophic– eutrophic spectrum, from below 50µS (micro-Siemens) to about 1,000µS. -

Los estudios citogenéticos en Heteroptera contribuyen al análisis de las tendencias evolutivas en el taxón. Los Heteroptera se caracterizan por poseer cromosomas holocinéticos, diferentes sistemas de cromosomas sexuales y un par de cromosomas m en algunas especies. En este trabajo describimos el cariotipo y la meiosis masculina de Sigara denseconscripta (Breddin), S. chrostowskii Jaczewski y S. rubyae (Hungerford). Las tres especies tienen un número diploide de 24, con un par de cromosomas m y un sistema de cromosomas sexuales XY/XX. Con estos resultados son 30 las especies de Corixoidea estudiadas citogenéticamente y el cariotipo modal de la superfamilia es 2n= 20+2m+XY en machos. La información citogenética disponible hasta el presente en Heteroptera nos permite sugerir que la presencia de cromosomas m y cromosomas sexuales XY/XX, serían caracteres plesiomórficos para Nepomorpha. La ausencia de cromosomas m en especies de Nepoidea y Ochteroidea, y los sistemas de cromosomas sexuales X0 y Xn0 (en machos) en especies de Corixoidea, Naucoroidea y Nepoidea, serían caracteres derivados que habrían surgido evolutivamente más tarde. -

Specimens were collected by monthly monitoring different types of habitats in the protected area. The study reveals an addition of 17 species, along with the 8 species previously described for this area. Was noted the presence of Aphelocheirus aestivalis Fabricius, 1794 and Cymatia rogenhoferi Fieber, 1864 species that have a sporadic presence in the Romanian fauna, being reported few records for these species. These data complete the information on this group collected on the other side of the Romanian-Hungarian border, in Körös-Maros National Park, where a number of 28 species were identified. Because the goal is to create a protected area on both sides of the border, it is imperative to know this group in both protected areas, in order to create a common monitoring plan and common management measures.
