  • Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

Azeroth Updated 08-15-19 Version 1.0 By: Silentcrypt ─ Welcome to Azeroth, a land of magic and endless war. A world where dragons soar and demons prowl the night. The two major factions, The Horde and The Alliance, battle for, well honestly no one knows anymore, they just like killing one another. But don’t let the magical nature of this world fool you, for there is evil lurking everywhere, even in the heart of the planet itself. The Old Gods, the Twilight Cult, 1 the Scourge, the Burning Legion, the Cult of the Damned, and many, many other threats abound on Azeroth. This Jumpchain assumes the Jumper has, at least, basic understanding of World of Warcraft before taking this Jump. If you are not familiar with WoW, the expansions, the races, classes, or items listed within, I implore you to look up videos on youtube or subscribe to WoW yourself and check it out. I will not spend too much time covering well-known things like classes or the playable races, and most of the attention will be focused on items and races you can’t get in the game or there is little knowledge of even within the game. Again, if you are new, I encourage you to check out Youtube (Nobbel87 is a pretty good source for lore) and do a bit of research on your own. As with all Jumps, you start off with 1000 CP to spend on whatever you like. 2 Location You may choose any location on Azeroth that was available during World of Warcraft Classic and on the two major continents Kalimdor and The Eastern Kingdoms.

  • Ruiz Final Dissertation
IN TRANSIT: TRAVEL AND MOBILITY IN LATINA ART AND LITERATURE BY ARIANA A. RUIZ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois of Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez, Chair Professor Robert Dale Parker Associate Professor Susan Koshy Associate Professor Mimi Thi Nguyen Associate Professor Mary Pat Brady, Cornell University ii Abstract The myth of American travel and mobility has long shaped ideas of nation and national identity. In postwar cultural production, to move freely is to enact rights governed by U.S. citizenship. Mobility is thus an embodied social, cultural, and political exercise that informs the production of an ideal national subject. Yet, access to and participation in mobile practices is deeply fraught around issues of difference. This project therefore considers Latina engagement with the promise of travel and mobility, drawing attention to the limits of citizenship and complicating the homogenizing tendencies of Latino identity formation. While other scholars primarily focus on Latino mobility through the lens of subjugation and migrant labor, my analysis attends to generational cultural shifts and changing socio-economic conditions. Throughout the study, I focus on the work of Latina artists like Helena Maria Viramontes, Cristina Henríquez, Michele Serros, and Erika Lopez to show how Latinas adopt various modes of travel and mobility that refute fixity in order to forge cross-cultural affiliations on local and global scales. My work sees Latina movement not simply as reenacting U.S. mobility, but also as a complex raced and gendered action anchored in particular political and cultural realities.
