Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Today is April 6, 1971 and this is Irene Cortinovis of the Archives of the University of Missouri. I have with me today Mr. Chick Finney and Mr. Martin L. MacKay who have agreed to make a tape recording with me for our Oral History Section. They are musicians from St. Louis of long standing and we are going to talk today about their early lives and also about their experiences on the music scene in St. Louis. CORTINOVIS: First, I'll ask you a few questions, gentlemen. Did you ever play on any of the Mississippi riverboats, the J.S, The St. Paul or the President? FINNEY: I never did play on any of those name boats, any of those that you just named, Mrs. Cortinovis, but I was a member of the St. Louis Crackerjacks and we played on kind of an unknown boat that went down the river to Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky. But I just can't think of the name of the boat, because it was a small boat. Do you need the name of the boat? CORTINOVIS: No. I don't need the name of the boat. FINNEY: Mrs. Cortinovis, this is Martin McKay who is a name drummer who played with all the big bands from Count Basie to Duke Ellington. -

It is because so many of you show up and go absolutely apeshit over these incredible young bands. Bands that play LOUDFEST can‘t wait to come back over here because they have heard for many years how useless it is to book shows in College Station. They had no idea about downtown Bryan. Rola at Revolution Café & Bar and Eric at The Stafford have filled a rather large void. Down- town Bryan picks up that slack. So many of the older people who came out to their first LOUDFEST last month 979Represent is a local magazine had no idea that any live local music goes on around here, let alone ANYTHING at all in downtown Bryan. for the discerning dirtbag. They assumed it was Northgate or nothing. So many bands have heard the horror stories from other bands about getting dicked over on money, parking and promotion by the few Northgate clubs that still book bands that they see Aggieland as a market to avoid. LOUDFEST is helping to change that attitude. Editorial bored LOUDFEST is booked every year out of a sense of brotherhood. We book bands we like and want to see. -

November 5th, 2007 Volume 10, Issue 2 Fear Factors into Best’s Halloween Assembly By Echo Reporter Devon Henderson This year, Halloween marked the first spirit assembly held at Charles Best in some time. After last year’s lack of pep rallies, student council promised to hold more of these events. The list of attractions at this year’s assembly included a Fear Factor, which was reinstated after its popularity in 2004, a costume contest for most original and scariest, and, naturally, free candy for the audience. As students filed into the gym to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, which was playing on repeat, it was apparent that a lot of thought had gone into some of the costumes, and that this year’s contest would be tight. The first event up was the grade versus grade versus teacher Fear Factor, in which the randomly selected contestants were made to publicly embarrass themselves. Jordan Beaumont-Ferri and Jordan Mac represented Grade 9, Iggy Lake and Paul Wedowich were the grade 10 contestants, Nicole Ugali and Teresa Stenmark went up for the 11’s, Nathan Beaumont-Ferri and Kristen Gourley played for the senior class, and the teachers were represented by Mr. Macdonald and Mr. Last. Once the contestants had sufficiently embarrassed themselves through song, consumed smoothies containing delicacies such as horse radish and crickets, and panicked their way through an obstacle course, grade 11’s Ugali and Stenmark reigned victorious. Following up Fear Factor was the annual costume contest in which contestants were judged based on scariness and creativity. Among the creative were an iPod commercial, Thing 1 and Thing 2, a Twister board, and Oprah herself, portrayed almost freakishly accurately by Duncan Webster. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

Oftentimes, the most invigorating renewal in any particular community comes not from a generation’s desperate search for some sort of unrealized frontier, but from a reverence for the strength of its foundation. The steadfast metal fury of PHINEHAS is focused, deliberate, and unashamed. Across three albums and two EPs, the Southern California quartet has proven to be both herald of the genre’s future and keeper of its glorious past. The New Wave Of American Metal defined by the likes of As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, Unearth, All That Remains, Bleeding Through, and likeminded bands on the Ozzfest stage and on the covers of heavy metal publications has found a new heir in PHINEHAS. Even as the NWOAM owed a sizeable debt to Europe’s At The Gates and In Flames and North America’s Integrity and Coalesce, PHINEHAS grab the torch from the generation just before them. The four men of mayhem find themselves increasingly celebrated by fans, critics, and contemporaries, due to their pulse-pounding brutality. Make no mistake: PHINEHAS is not a simple throwback. PHINEHAS is a distillation of everything that has made the genre great since bands first discovered the brilliant results of combining heavy metal’s technical skill with hardcore punk’s impassioned fury.
