ABSTRACTS FOR 92nd ANNUAL MEETING PACFIC BRANCH, ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA March 30 – April 2, 2008 Embassy Suites Napa Valley Napa, California, USA 1. IMPROVED MANAGEMENT OF CUCUMBER BEETLES IN CALIFORNIA MELONS Andrew Pedersen1, Larry D. Godfrey1, Carolyn Pickel2 1Dept. of Entomology, University of California, Davis, Davis, CA 2University of California Cooperative Extension, 142 Garden Highway, Suite A, Yuba City, CA In recent years cucumber beetles (Chrysomelidae) have become increasingly problematic as pests of melons grown in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys of California. The primary source of damage comes from feeding on the rind of the developing fruit by adults, and occasionally by larvae, which creates corky lesions and renders the fruit unmarketable, especially for export. Larval feeding on the roots may also be contributing. There are two species of cucumber beetles that are pests of California melons: Western spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata undecimpunctata Mannerheim) and Western striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma trivittatum Mannerheim). Monitoring of both species in Sutter and Colusa Counties began mid-season in July 2007 to investigate biology, distribution, and population dynamics but has not yet produced conclusive results. A study comparing the effects of different insecticide treatments with and without a cucurbitacin-based feeding stimulant called Cidetrak® was initiated in the summer of 2007. Cidetrak did appear to reduce beetle numbers when combined with either Spinosad or low doses of Sevin XLR Plus. None of the treatments however, reduced cosmetic damage sustained to the fruit. The limited plot size may have compromised the integrity of the treatments. Future studies will utilize field cages or larger plots in order to prevent movement between treatment plots.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper presents several new additions and changes to the subfamily Amblyseiinae of New Zealand. Amblyseius lentiginosus Denmark & Schicha, 1974 is newly recorded in New Zealand and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Amblyseius obtusus was recollected and a revised key to New Zealand species of Amblyseius is provided. Proprioseiopsis lenis (Corpuz & Rimando, 1966) is reported from New Zealand for the first time and its females are described in detail. A key to New Zealand species of Proprioseiopsis is also included. A rare species, Phytoscutus acaridophagus (Collyer, 1964), was rediscovered and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Three species, two in Amblyseius and one in Proprioseiopsis, are transferred to the genus Graminaseius: G. bidibidi (Collyer, 1964) comb. nov., G. martini (Collyer, 1982) comb. nov. and G. exopodalis (Kennett, 1958) comb.

Date: December 2018 Copyright © 2019 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT The common grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is the main species used for wine making, with South Africa being one of the top wine exporting countries. Grapevine is vulnerable to a range of pests, one of these being mites. Plant-parasitic mites are extremely damaging pests with a rapid generation time, high fecundity and a tendency to over-exploit their hosts. Disconcertingly, the diversity of mites in vineyards in South Africa is virtually unknown. Surveys have been done with predatory mites and phytophagous mites being recorded, but no recent studies focussing on their ecology, pest status and seasonal cycles have been collected. The aim of this study was to survey phytophagous and predatory mite diversity and to investigate pest status of the plant feeding mites of South African grapevine, including the recently introduced, invasive Brevipalpus lewisi.

Diversity of spiders in Quevedo Island, Sinaloa, Mexico ABSTRACT. ABSTRACT TAYLOR, MARY CLAIRE GARRISON. Mycophagous Soil Fauna for Biological Control of Soilborne Pathogenic Fungi in Greenhouse and Transplant Crops. (Under the direction of Shuijin Hu and H. David Shew). The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of using dairy cow compost as a soil amendment in conjunction with nematodes, collembolans, and mites as an alternative to chemical control for soilborne fungal pathogens and their diseases in greenhouse and transplant crop production systems. Three model systems were used; 1) Tomato attacked by Pythium ultimum, 2) Vinca and Impatiens attacked by Rhizoctonia solani, and 3) Bell pepper attacked by Phytophthora capsici. Five experiments total were conducted using three types of faunal treatments; 1) Nematode Aphelenchus avenae, 2) Collembolan (unidentified), and 3) Mite (unidentified) and three rates of dairy cow compost; 1) 4% by volume, 2) 8% by volume, and 3) 16% by volume. The fungal-feeding nematode Aphelenchus avenae can effectively suppress seedling damping-off caused by Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Phytophthora capsici to a level equivalent to the standard fungicide treatment. Compost rate affects the disease suppression efficiency of the faunal treatments likely through impacting the mesofauna’s survival and growth in the seedling rhizosphere. Disease suppression capacity resulting from mesofauna may be extended to the field. • Semi-Automated Identification of Biological Control Agent Using
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Semi‑automated identifcation of biological control agent using artifcial intelligence Jhih‑Rong Liao1, Hsiao‑Chin Lee1, Ming‑Chih Chiu2,3* & Chiun‑Cheng Ko1,3* The accurate identifcation of biological control agents is necessary for monitoring and preventing contamination in integrated pest management (IPM); however, this is difcult for non‑taxonomists to achieve in the feld. Many machine learning techniques have been developed for multiple applications (e.g., identifcation of biological organisms). Some phytoseiids are biological control agents for small pests, such as Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes. To identify a precise biological control agent, a boosting machine learning classifcation, namely eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), was introduced in this study for the semi‑automated identifcation of phytoseiid mites. XGBoost analyses were based on 22 quantitative morphological features among 512 specimens of N. barkeri and related phytoseiid species. These features were extracted manually from photomicrograph of mites and included dorsal and ventrianal shield lengths, setal lengths, and length and width of spermatheca. The results revealed 100% accuracy rating, and seta j4 achieved signifcant discrimination among specimens. The present study provides a path through which skills and experiences can be transferred between experts and non‑experts. This can serve as a foundation for future studies on the automated identifcation of biological control agents for IPM. Integrated pest management (IPM) is applied in agricultural practices to concurrently minimise crop damage, environmental contamination, and economic loss 1,2. Biological control agents are crucial for IPM and agro- ecosystems. Regularly monitoring pests and biological control agents is necessary for IPM. Without accurate identifcation, the efciency of biological control cannot be monitored 2,3.
