MuMA 1 SYNOPSIS: The subfamilies and genera of Phytoseiidae are re-evaluated on the basis of combined stable criteria of dorsal scutal form, dorsal scutal setation, scapular setation, sternal form, sternal setation and the macrosetae of leg IV. Four subfamilies are recognized, two of them new. Of the 43 genera diagnosed, 10 were Dreviously recognized, 8 previously synonymized, 1 i5 elevated from a subgenus, and 29 are new. Nine new species are described and figured. Alto- gether 187 speciesare cited. Many systematic studies have been conducted on this important family of predatory mites during the past 10 years. More than 180 species are now known, and the present high rate of species discovery indicates that this number may be doubled during the next decade. -

ISSN 1676-0611 Two of the most economically important superfamilies of phytophagous mites are Tetranychoidea and Eriophyoidea, which have species represented in rubber trees in Brazil. In this paper we review the literature concerning the mite fauna registered on rubber trees in that country. The source was the information available on literature, but also data from exploratory samplings in Goianésia, State of Goiás, and from a triennial survey with monthly samplings in Cedral, State of São Paulo. Among the phytophagous mites the most important and abundant species were Calacarus heveae and Tenuipalpus heveae. Seven of the nominal species reported belong to the family Tetranychidae. Eutetranychus banksi and Oligonychus gossypii were very numerous in several crops studied, although with no evident damage to the leaves caused by the former. -

EENY377 Phalaenopsis Mite, Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker (Arachnida: Acari: Tenuipalpidae)1 H. A. Denmark2 Introduction Pritchard (1949) refers to Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker as the phalaenopsis mite. This flat, red mite is one of the most destructive found on orchids under Florida greenhouse conditions. It feeds on the leaves of orchids but does not spin a web. Apparently it is an introduced species on orchids from the tropics. It can also be a pest of ferns. Distribution Tenuipalpus pacificus was described from specimens intercepted at Hoboken, New Jersey, from the Canal Zone on Phalaenopsis stuartiana in 1943 (Baker). The known distribution is Australia (New South Wales) (CSIRO 2004), Brazil (De Moraes and Freire 2001), Eng- land, Germany, Holland, Java, Panama, Philippines, Siam, South Africa, and the United States. In the United States, it has been recorded in California, Hawaii (Anonymous 2002), and Florida. It is probably Figure 1. Description The length of the adult female, including the rostrum, is 312 microns and 190 microns wide. The third terminal, palpal segment is small with one short, straight seta and one longer, slightly curved seta. These characters cannot be seen on unmounted specimens. The hysterosoma has four pairs of non-flagellate setae and one pair of flagellate 1. Ce travail de thèse avait donc pour objectif de répondre à de telles questions pour deux genres : Phytoseiulus et Neoseiulella, en utilisant pour la première fois des approches phylogénétiques moléculaires et morphologiques. Ces études phylogénétiques ont été également associées à des études biogéographiques. Les résultats obtenus par ces deux approches sont congruents et semblent montrer que ces deux genres ne sont pas monophylétiques : le genre Phytoseiulus semble au mieux paraphylétique, tandis que le genre Neoseiulella serait polyphylétique. -

Several researchers have recorded a high abundance of Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, 1945 (Acari, Tenuipalpidae) in rubber tree plantations from different regions of Brazil. Currently this species is considered a mite pest for this crop. Tenuipalpus heveae was described only from female specimens collected on rubber tree from Belterra, State of Pará, Brazil. Recently, male and immatures were described. However, the original description of the female does not provide essential information (e.g. drawings of the dorsal ornamentation, venter, leg chaetotaxy and setal measurements), and thus, it may be difficult to correctly identify the species. In this paper, we re- describe the female of T. heveae in a standardized form, based on the study of the type specimens deposited at the Smithsonian Institution - USNM Insect & Mite Collection, at the Collection of Acari DZSJRP, and specimens collected in rubber tree plantations from different regions of Brazil. -
