In Europe, it is an indige- nous species, commonly found on various plants, including conifers. The present study examined whether A. andersoni can develop and reproduce while feeding on two key pests of ornamental coniferous plants, i.e., Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi) and Pentamerismus taxi (Haller). Pinus sylvestris L. pollen was also tested as an alternative food source for the predator. Both prey species and pine pollen were suitable food sources for A. andersoni. In laboratory, plant material was examined under magnification and mite morpho-species belonging to tetranychid and tenuipalpid were picked up. A total of two tenuipalpid species and eight tetranychid species were identified. Tenuipalpid mites identified were Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) on Cassia siamea (Caesalpinaceae), Capparis linearis (Capparidaceae), Spathodea campanulata (Bignoniaceae), Randia sp. (Rubiaceae), Melicoccus bijugatus (Sapindaceae) and Tenuipalpus sp. was collected from Spondias mombin (Anacardiaceae). On the other hand, tetranychid included Tetranychus urticae Koch on Terminalia catappa (Combretaceae), Euphorbia pulcherrima (Euphorbiaceae) and Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Mimosaceae). -

Key words: Checklist, mite, habitat, distribution, Iran. Introduction Apparently the first checklist about mites of Iran was that of Farahbakhsh in 1961. Subsequently the following lists were published: “The 20 years researches of Acarology in Iran, List of agricultural pests and their natural enemies in Iran, A catalog of mites and ticks (Acari) of Iran and Injurious mites of agricultural crops in Iran” are four main works (Sepasgosarian 1977; Modarres Awal 1997; Kamali et al. 2001; Khanjani & Haddad Irani-Nejad 2006). Prostigmatic mites consist of parasitic, plant feeding and beneficial predatory species and is the major group of Acari in the world. EENY377 Phalaenopsis Mite, Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker (Arachnida: Acari: Tenuipalpidae)1 H. A. Denmark2 Introduction Pritchard (1949) refers to Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker as the phalaenopsis mite. This flat, red mite is one of the most destructive found on orchids under Florida greenhouse conditions. It feeds on the leaves of orchids but does not spin a web. Apparently it is an introduced species on orchids from the tropics. It can also be a pest of ferns. Distribution Tenuipalpus pacificus was described from specimens intercepted at Hoboken, New Jersey, from the Canal Zone on Phalaenopsis stuartiana in 1943 (Baker). The known distribution is Australia (New South Wales) (CSIRO 2004), Brazil (De Moraes and Freire 2001), Eng- land, Germany, Holland, Java, Panama, Philippines, Siam, South Africa, and the United States. In the United States, it has been recorded in California, Hawaii (Anonymous 2002), and Florida. It is probably Figure 1. Description The length of the adult female, including the rostrum, is 312 microns and 190 microns wide. The third terminal, palpal segment is small with one short, straight seta and one longer, slightly curved seta. These characters cannot be seen on unmounted specimens. The hysterosoma has four pairs of non-flagellate setae and one pair of flagellate 1. GUTIERREZ INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been made in the systematics of Tetranychidae since 1955, the date of publication of the revision of the family carried out by Pritchard and Baker. This work also provides the first modern definition of this group, as well as its division into two large sub-families. The number of known genera which, before 1955, totalled 20, has now risen to 63, while the number of valid species has increased from 185 to almost 900. Numerous species, however, are still to be discovered. In 1979 Baker estimated that approximately 70% of the world fauna was still unnamed. -
