The mite fauna from ‘Jóia 4’, ‘Ouromel 3’, ‘Regis’ and ‘Rei da conserva’ cultivars over the rootstock Okinawa were determined from December 2002 to February 2006. Samples composed by 72 leaves were collected fortnightly from upper, middle and lower third of each tree and four trees per cultivar. -

Abstract The expansion of red palm mite (RPM), Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) in Brazil could impact negatively the native plant species, especially of the family Arecaceae. To determine which species could be at risk, we investigated the development and reproductive potential of R. indica on 19 plant species including 13 native species to the Brazilian Amazon (12 Arecaceae and one Heliconiaceae), and six exotic species, four Arecaceae, a Musaceae and a Zingiberaceae. -

Sixteen phytoseiid spe- cies of the subfamily Phytoseiinae (Chantia: 1 species, Phytoseius: 13 species and Platyseiella: 2 species) are reported in this paper. They include all species of this subfamily known to occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Ten of these species are redescribed. Most of those species were collected in cassava habitats in tropical Africa and in other habitats in South Africa. A key is included to help in the separation of these species. Key words: Biological control, predator, cassava, taxonomy, Phytoseiidae Introduction Phytoseiid mites are commonly used for the biological control of pest mites in many countries. An inventory of the fauna of a given region is one of the first steps in an effort to establish a biological control program against a pest species. -

Yamamoto' RESUMO Predação de Euseius citnfolius Denmark & Muma Sobre o Ácaro da Leprose dos Citros Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tenuipalpidae) Estimou-se a atividade predatória de liuselus citrfolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) sobre o ácaro da leprose dos citros, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). As larvas, ninfas e fêmeas adultas foram semelhantes e superiores na atividade predatória sobre o ácaro da leprose que os machos adultos. Dentre os estágios imaturos, a larva foi a mais atacada pelo predador, e o aumento da relação predador: presa resultou em níveis maiores de prepdação. A presença da verrugose nos frutos causou uma diminuição significativa na predação de E. cilrifolius sobre B. phoenicis. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Arthropoda, controle biológico, atividade predatória, relação predador-presa, verrugose. ABSTRAC The predatory activity ofEuseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) upon the citrus leprosis mite, Brevipalpus phoeni cis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) was studied. It was found that the phytoseiid larva, nymph and adult female, showed similar leveis of predation, and were better predators than adult males. Among the immature stages of prey, the larval stage was the most ftequently consumed by ali life stages ofthe predator. lncreasi ng predator: prey ratios resulted in higher predation rates. The presence ofcitrus scab disease on the fruits caused a signiflcant decrease in predation of B. phoenicis by E. citrifolius.
