At the same time, growing concerns about declines of pollinator species raise the question of whether vector control practices might affect pollinator populations. We report the results of a task force of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) that examined potential effects of vector management practices on pollinators, and how these pro- grams could be adjusted to minimize negative effects on pollinating species. The main types of vector control practices that might affect pollinators are landscape manipulation, biocontrol, and pesticide applications. Some current practices already minimize effects of vector control on pollinators (e.g., short-lived pesticides and application-targeting technologies). Nontarget effects can be further diminished by taking pollinator protection into account in the planning stages of vector management programs. -

The mite fauna from ‘Jóia 4’, ‘Ouromel 3’, ‘Regis’ and ‘Rei da conserva’ cultivars over the rootstock Okinawa were determined from December 2002 to February 2006. Samples composed by 72 leaves were collected fortnightly from upper, middle and lower third of each tree and four trees per cultivar. -

Am. 89(3): 368-374 (1996) ABSTRACT Data on the seasonal reproductive patterns of the honey bee tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), were obtained by dissecting host honey bees, Apis mellifera L., at intervals during their life span. Mite reproduction normally was limited to 1 complete gen- eration per host bee, regardless of host life span. However, limited egg laying by foundress progeny was observed. Longer lived bees in the fall and winter harbored mites that reproduced for a longer period than did mites in bees during spring and summer. Oviposition rate was relatively uniform at =0.85 eggs per female per day during the initial 16 d of adult bee life regardless of season. In all seasons, peak mite populations occurred in bees =24 d old, with egg laying declining rapidly beyond day 24 in spring and summer bees but more slowly in fall and winter bees. Stadial lengths of eggs and male and female larvae were 5, 4, and 5 d, respectively. Sex ratio ranged from 1.15:1 to 2.01:1, female bias, but because males are not known to migrate they would have been overestimated in the sampling scheme. Fecundity was estimated to be =21 offspring, assuming daughter mites laid limited eggs in tracheae before dispersal. Mortality of adult mites increased with host age; an estimate of 35 d for female mite longevity was indirectly obtained. -

In Europe, it is an indige- nous species, commonly found on various plants, including conifers. The present study examined whether A. andersoni can develop and reproduce while feeding on two key pests of ornamental coniferous plants, i.e., Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi) and Pentamerismus taxi (Haller). Pinus sylvestris L. pollen was also tested as an alternative food source for the predator. Both prey species and pine pollen were suitable food sources for A. andersoni. Key words: Predatory mite, Phytoseiidae, Amblyseius, new species. Introduction Predatory mites constitute a highly significant beneficial group on account of their vital role in the maintenance of pest population below the economic injury level. The species of Phytoseiidae are potentially important as a biotic factor in the control of phytophagous mites (Ewing 1914). Mass multiplication methods have been developed to use these predators in commercial scale on a variety of crops (Lo et al. 1979, Krishnamoorty 1982). Phytoseiidae contain 168 species under 12 genera (Gupta and Arun Gupta 1999). However, the reports on occurrence of new species are scanty from peninsular India. Hence a systematic survey was undertaken to unravel the occurrence of new species of Phytoseiidae from various districts of Kerala. The present new species was collected during this survey. The occurrence of phytoseiids in stored products is a very rare phenomenon, though isolated examples exists for the occurrence of members of Amblyseius and Neoseiulus in stored grains (Hughes 1976, Smiley 1984). Materials and Methods The predatory mite fauna harbouring on various stored commodities were collected by making extensive surveys in Kerala. Random samples of 100gms were collected in separate polythene bags and brought to the laboratory. -

Yamamoto' RESUMO Predação de Euseius citnfolius Denmark & Muma Sobre o Ácaro da Leprose dos Citros Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tenuipalpidae) Estimou-se a atividade predatória de liuselus citrfolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) sobre o ácaro da leprose dos citros, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). As larvas, ninfas e fêmeas adultas foram semelhantes e superiores na atividade predatória sobre o ácaro da leprose que os machos adultos. Dentre os estágios imaturos, a larva foi a mais atacada pelo predador, e o aumento da relação predador: presa resultou em níveis maiores de prepdação. A presença da verrugose nos frutos causou uma diminuição significativa na predação de E. cilrifolius sobre B. phoenicis. ABSTRAC The predatory activity ofEuseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) upon the citrus leprosis mite, Brevipalpus phoeni cis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) was studied. It was found that the phytoseiid larva, nymph and adult female, showed similar leveis of predation, and were better predators than adult males. Among the immature stages of prey, the larval stage was the most ftequently consumed by ali life stages ofthe predator. lncreasi ng predator: prey ratios resulted in higher predation rates. The presence ofcitrus scab disease on the fruits caused a signiflcant decrease in predation of B. phoenicis by E. citrifolius.
