Abstract History of ornithology is bound to history of scientific illustration. Since ancient times illustration has offered us a vision of birds in culture, as support for morphological descriptions, behavior, discovery of new species and bird classifications, up to birding guides and a wealth of artistic works of great value in themselves.

All rights reserved. PREFACE When the papers, which go to make up this book, were firsts con- templated, it was proposed that they should deal purely with sport. It was felt, however, that there was a very distinct need for some popular work not merely on game birds and animals, but on the whole, or as much as possible, of the North China fauna. Consequently, it was decided to endeavour to meet, if only in a small measure, this need. The resulting papers, penned sometimes in town, sometimes even on the road, but always with a sad lack of reference works, can not claim to do justice to the great subject.

LONDON : ANDREW MELROSE, LTD. 3 YORK STREET, COVENT GARDEN, W.C. 1918 To MAJOR ROBERT STERLING CLARK. In memory of many happy days' hunting on the Sino-Mongolian Frontier. Introduction EVER since the Original Hundred Families wandered eastward from Central Asia into the land now knGwn as China, and settled in^the broad and fertile valley of the Wei River in the present province of Shensi, forming the nucleus of the Flowery Kingdom, its people have been harassed continually by the ravaging hordes of Tartary. The frontiers between the two races, one peace- ful and addicted to the practice of the Arts, the other warlike, and caring only for plunder, rapine and conquest, have always been marked by scenes of bloody conflicts, ruthless raids and brutal massacres ; yet, strange though it may seem, it has been the peaceful nation which has won in the end, and continually the Sino-Mongohan boundary has been pushed further to the north.

On the pigment of the negro’s skin and hair. Offprint from Journal of Experimental Medicine 1 (1896). 40pp. Plate. 244 x 170 mm. Original printed wrap- pers, slightly chipped, small marginal tears in back wrapper mended with clear tape, unobtrusive French library stamp on front wrapper. Small dampstain in the lower corner of the last few leaves, but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed on the front wrapper: “With the com- pliments of John J. Abel.” $450 First Edition, Offprint Issue. Abel and Davis conducted the first detailed analysis of the chemical composition of black skin pigment (mela- nin). They concluded that “In the present state of our knowledge we can only say that it seems highly probable that the pigment of the negro’s hair is not different from the dark pigment found in the hair of the white races, and we may infer that the pigment of the black skin differs only in amount and not in kind from that deposited in the skin of the white man” (p. 40). Abel founded the department of pharmacology at Johns Hopkins and made a number of important discoveries during his long tenure there, including the isolation of epinephrin and the crystallization of insulin.
