IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING FRAMES As a general rule works are sold as framed unless the term ‘unframed’ appears in the catalogue description. Some pictures have been photographed to show the frame, but the majority are not. The absence of a frame in the photograph does not necessarily indicate that the work is unframed. To avoid any possible confusion prospective buyers are respectfully requested to check and satisfy themselves with regards to this matter prior to bidding. Condition reports: [email protected]

Notes:

John Constable visited Layer Marney in June 1814 whilst staying with Reverend Driffield at Feering in Essex and two sketches of the tower which he made in pencil and watercolour are known.

The millboard has been professionally examined and dated to the early 19th century.

Whilst the above work was formerly accepted as John Constable by the late Graham Reynolds, current scholarship does not fully endorse this view and an alternative attribution to Lionel Constable (fourth son of John Constable) has also been suggested.

Provenance:

1. Formerly with Sir Alan Rae-Smith K.B.E. (Partner of Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths) as a gift by the Directors of Vickers in 1951 thence by family descent.

2. With Fergus Hall

3. Private Collection where bequeathed to our current vendor.
