The shield was discovered in 2015 near Lakenheath in the county of Suffolk by a metal detectorist, the shield has gone to the Portable Antiquities Scheme and registered. Born in Southwold, Suffolk in 1833, son of John Lowsey, a river pilot, and his wife Mary née Barber, who married at Southwold on 25 December 1823. In 1851, a 12 year old, living at Green Lane, Southwold with his 46 year old mother Mary, and four of his several siblings. He did military service in the merchant navy 1853-1857. In 1891, a 53 year old mariner, lodging at North Green, Station Road, Easton Bavents, Southwold, the home of 72 year old widow, Elizabeth Peck. He operated the camera obscura, a Victorian sea- front attraction, in which surrounding scenery was reflected onto a table by means of a lens and also painted pictures. Like many former fishermen, he died in the workhouse at Bulcamp near Southwold in September 1901 and buried in St Edmund's churchyard, Southwold where there is a monument to him and his parents

Lot 478 Description Estimate Alfred J Jansen (1859-1935) Archangle ship, signed oil on canvas, 53cm x £100.00 - £150.00 33cm Footnote: The Archangel was originally launched as the St. Petersburg form the yard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank (Yard No.397). Constructed in iron, the hull measured 330.8′ x 43.2′ x 17.8′ and weighed in at 2448 gross tons. The St. Petersburg was purchased from her original owners, the Great Eastern Railway Co Ltd, by LNER in 1923, renamed Archangel and she then served for nearly 20 years on east coast routes and beyond. At the outbreak of World War Two she was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Shipping for use as an auxiliary transport and troopship. On the night of 16th May 1941 she was en route from Kirkwall to Aberdeen under the command of Captain A P Sutton when she was attacked by German aircraft. The ship received multiple direct hits and was severely damaged but thankfully did not sink immediately. However there were a number of casualties aboard caused by the explosions. The exact number of casualties is unclear with reports varying from 17 to 40 crewmen (including Captain Sutton)
