Haymes One of the proudest inventions of German scholarship in the nineteenth century was the Heldenlied, the heroic song, which was seen by scholars as the main conduit of Germanic heroic legend from the Period of Migrations to the time of their being written down in the Middle Ages. The concept stems indirectly from the suggestions of several eighteenth-century Homeric scholars that since the Homeric poems were much too long to have been memorized and performed in oral tradition, they must have existed as shorter, episodic songs. Friedrich August Wolf’s well-known Prolegomena ad Homerum (1795) collected evidence for the idea that writing was not used for poetry until long after Homer’s time. He argued for a thorough recension of the poem under (or perhaps by) Pisistratus in the sixth century BCE as the first comprehensive written Homer. These ideas were almost immediately applied to the Middle High German Nibelungenlied by Karl Lachmann (1816), who was trained as a classical philologist and indeed continued to contribute in that area at the same time that he was one of the most influential members of the generation that founded the new discipline of Germanistik. On the basis of rough spots and contradictions (not only Homer nods!) Lachmann thought he could recognize twenty separate Lieder in the Middle High German epic. At the same time that Lachmann was deconstructing the German medieval epic, Elias Lönnrot was assembling the Finnish epic he called Kalevala from shorter songs in conscious imitation of the Homer (or Pisistratus) described by Wolf. -

Gary Miller, Oxford University Press (2012), xxxi + 317 pp., Price: £65.00, ISBN 9780199654260 Lexical borrowing aside, external influences are not the main concern of most histories of the English language. It is therefore timely, and novel, to have a history of English (albeit only up to the Renaissance period) that looks at English purely from the perspective of external influences. Miller assembles his book around five strands of influence: (1) Celtic, (2) Latin and Greek, (3) Scandinavian, (4) French, (5) later Latin and Greek input, and he focuses on influences that left their mark on contemporary mainstream English rather than on regional or international varieties. This review looks at all chapters, but priority is given to Miller’s discussions of structural influence, especially on English syntax, morphology and phonology, which often raise a number of theoretical issues. Loanwords from various sources, which are also covered extensively in the book, will receive slightly less attention. Chapter 1 introduces the Indo-European and Germanic background of English and gives short descriptions of the languages with which English came into contact. This is a good way to start the book, but the copious lists of loanwords from Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Low German, Afrikaans etc., most of which appear in English long after the Renaissance stop-off point, were not central to its aims. It would have been better to use this space to expand upon the theoretical framework employed throughout the book. -

Alas, this is not something historical linguists could do much/anything to shed light on. F. From human fossils nothing can be inferred about the linguistic working of brains and little about the organs implicated in speech. Speech acts were given greater permanence through writing only much later: from around 3,200 BCE in Mesopotamia as well as in Egypt, from around 1,200 BCE in China, and from around 600 BCE in Mesoamerica. The technology for actually recording speech (and other) sounds was only invented in 1857. F. Plank, Early Germanic 3 What cannot be observed must be (rationally) hypothesised. The standard method in historical linguistics for rationally forming hypotheses about a past from which we have no direct evidence is the comparative method. Alas, the comparative method for the reconstruction of linguistic forms (lexical as well as grammatical) only reaches back some 8,000 years maximum, given the normal life expectancy and recognisability limits of forms and meanings. And it is questionable whether constructions can be rigorously reconstructed. -

Dat klinkt duister en kil en riekt naar spinnenwebben en vochtig beschimmelde hoekjes. Maar dat pakt anders uit. Deze uitgave, samengesteld uit twaalf delen, biedt de meer dan gemiddeld geïnteresseerde, verhelderende kaartjes, duidelijke teksten en foto’s van de historisch- geografische regio’s van Nederland. Zo geeft het een compleet beeld van Nederland anno toen, nu en de tijd die daar tussen zit. De hoofdstukken over de deelgebieden/regio’s schetsen in het kort een karakteristiek per gebied. De cultuurhistorische blikvangers worden gepresenteerd. Voor de fijnproevers volgt hierna een nadere uiteenzetting. De ontwikkeling van het landschap, de bodem en het reliëf, en de bewoningsgeschiedenis worden in beeld gebracht. Het gaat over de ligging van dorpen en steden, de verkavelingsvormen in het agrarisch land, de loop van wegen, kanalen en spoorlijnen, dijkenpatronen, waterlopen, defensielinies met fortificaties. -

Runic writing is attested from the second century onwards to the Middle Ages, and was in use in several parts of northern Europe during different periods. The language used is formulaic, making the impression that inscriptions in runes were for special occasions and not for daily use. Germanic society was a non-literate society until Christendom arrived and with it a literate culture. Runes are applied epigraphically; only in ecclesiastical contexts they are used in manuscripts, thus offering very useful secondary information about rune-names, for instance. Resumen: Esta contribución ofrece una aproximación a las más antiguas inscripciones rúnicas de las partes septentrionales de Europa. La escritura rúnica se atestigua desde el siglo II d. E. hasta la Edad Media y fue empleada en distintas partes de Europa durante diferentes periodos. El lenguaje empleado es formular, lo que da la impresión de que las inscripciones rúnicas fueron para ocasiones especiales y no para un uso diario. La sociedad germánica permaneció ágrafa hasta la llegada del cristianismo y con él una cultura escrita. Las runas se usaron epigráficamente; solamente en contextos eclesiásticos las runas fueron usadas en manuscritos, lo que ofrece una muy útil información secundaria, por ejemplo, sobre los nombres rúnicos. -
The Sociolinguistic Situation of Two Language Islands in Ohio and Argentina
The sociolinguistic situation of two language islands in Ohio and Argentina Robert Klosinski Pennsylvania State University Abstract Argentina and Ohio are homes of two distinct language islands (‘Sprachinseln’). This paper provides a basic overview of the history of these two heritage grammars, and comment on the current state of the speech commu- nities. Analyses suggest that Swiss German is now moribund (i.e. the community consists of the final generation of fluent speakers, as it was not passed on to the next generation). Similarly, numbers of fluent MSG speakers are decreasing. Yet, the degree of decay is different to that from Kidron, as there is a general cultural awareness within the speaker group to maintain parts of the language. 1 Introduction The following paper focuses on two language islands (i.e. Sprachinseln) located in North and South America, respectively. More specifically, the sociolinguistic situation will be introduced to trace down the nature of the language shift in the respective communities. Research on either community has been scarce, mainly focusing on syntactic and phonological phenomena of these Sprachinseln (Hoff- man & Klosinski 2018 for Kidron Swiss German; Putnam & Lipski 2016; Putnam & Schwarz 2014 for Misionero German). Both communities are far removed from the home country and thus their base dialect. Nevertheless, they speak distinct va- rieties of German. The language island in Ohio is Swiss German, and in Argentina it is a German variety, mainly from the Hunsrück area of Germany. Crucially, the sociolinguistics background has been neglected to date. However, before the two communities of this paper are introduced, it is important to discuss the term Sprachinsel (‘speech island’) as it is seen in the literature.
