    LLeeRRiivvoolluuzziioonnii ddeell 11883377 ee ddeell 11884488--11884499 Nella prima metà dell’Ottocento, Catania fu protagonista in ciascuna delle sollevazioni contro il giovane Regno delle Due Sicilie, nato nel 1816 e sempre, forse oltre i suoi veri demeriti, inviso ai siciliani Al suo primo sovrano Ferdinando, si imputava, infatti, di aver abolito la Costituzione “inglese” del 1812 e quella spagnola del 1820. A smorzare la loro tenace animosità non valse certo l’opera del successore Ferdinando II, incoronato nel 1830 che accentrò a Napoli il goveerno del regno in spregio alle secolari autonomie garantite in passato all’ isola . Per conseguenza, al giungere del colera, proveniente dal continente, nell’estate del 1837 era radicato in ogni strato della popolazione il convincimento che si volesse stroncare la latente ribellione della Sicilia con una micidiale pestilenza. L’aggravarsi dell’epidemia a Catania costrinse il 15 giugno la Giunta Sanitaria Provinciale, convocata dall’Intendente principe Alvaro Paternò di Manganelli, a disporre la chiusura preventiva dei pozzi di Battiati ed il Pozzo Molino. L’ignoranza ed il pregiudizio fecero ravvisare proprio in questa misura di profilassi una conferma alla diceria di una volontaria contaminazione delle fonti d’acqua. Condussero il malcontento popolare - espresso dal verso “veni lu mali veni ccu malizia Diu ppi Manu di l’omu fa giustizia” – ad esiti rivoluzionari taluni borghesi esponenti delle professioni come Salvatore Barbagallo Pittà, trentaseienne fondatore del giornale letterario “Lo Stesicoro”, Gaetano Mazzaglia, Giuseppe Caudullo Guarrera, Giacinto Gulli Pannetti, Giovanbattista Pensabene, Giuseppe Caudullo Amore, Angelo Sgroi, Sebastiano Sciuto, Al movimento aderirono alcuni rappresentanti dell’aristocrazia come l’influente marchese Antonino Paternò Castello di San Giuliano, cui venne affidata la guida della neocostituita Giunta di Pubblica Sicurezza.

X n. 1 Gennaio-Luglio 2006 pp. 49-102) IL CASTELLO URSINO E I MUSEI DI CATANIA NEL XX SECOLO di Alvise Spadaro alla memoria di Mario Sipala e Corrado Dollo Per l’inaugurazione del più antico museo catanese in attività, trofei, bandiere, tendaggi bianchi e rossi e un palco capace di 300 posti a sedere. Era il 30 luglio del 1858 e s'inaugurava l’Orto botanico dell’Università voluto da Tornabene Roccaforte, benedettino docente di botanica dell’Università di Catania e ampliato due anni dopo con un’area destinata alla coltivazione delle specie spontanee, grazie ad una donazione del catanese Mario Coltraro. Poi la città raggiunse così rapidamente l’impianto che non fu possibile alcun’altra espansione. Con ingresso gratuito su via Antonino Longo, sorge su un impianto che risale al 1788, e che ha mantenuto la sua struttura ottocentesca estesa per una superficie di circa mq 16.000. non suscettibili d'ampliamento. L’edificio porticato in stile neoclassico opera dell’architetto Distefano occupa il centro dell’area. L’Orto Generale di tredici piccole serre, una delle quali contiene le piante grasse della collezione del dr Gasperini; una serra caldo-umida per la riproduzione delle palme, una cinquantina di specie, e per la coltura di piante esotiche; tre vasche circolari per la coltivazione di piante acquatiche. Vi era anche una grande serra, detta Tepidario che fu demolita in seguito ai danni subiti durante l’ultimo conflitto mondiale. L’Orto Siculo di mq. 3.000 realizzato verso il 1887, ha esemplari provenienti da tutta l’Isola e specie esotiche da lungo tempo coltivate in Sicilia.

    Salvatore Barbagallo CITTA’ NEGLETTA INTRODUZIONE Per antonomasia Catania può ritenersi la città degli eccessi e delle contraddizioni, priva, cioè, di una volontà sociale e politica di progresso e di crescita umana. La ragione sta tutta nel fatto che Essa, dal punto di vista dell’incremento della propria popolazione, è cresciuta a dismisura rispetto alle altre città siciliane, eppure, non ha raggiunto una solida identità culturale in gran parte della propria gente. Pertanto, non è raro il caso in cui si sia voluto mescolare il sacro con il profano in una commistione di storia ed orrido, recente passato, come è successo ad esempio con il Teatro Romano e l’Odeon, a volte persino utilizzando i pregiati marmi provenienti da suddetti, vetusti monumenti. Spesso, durante gli spettacoli presso questi storici teatri, abbiamo assistito, piuttosto sconcertati al clamore degli spettacoli televisivi od a quello poco edificante dello sciacquone. Ogni giorno, persino più volte, percorriamo le vie della nostra città, sporchiamo e calpestiamo luoghi d’interesse 1 storico, a volte neanche sollevando lo sguardo dal nostro smartphone e con gli auricolari ben piantati all’interno dei nostri padiglioni, i quali ci rendono inesorabilmente simili a dei veri e propri automi privi di identità e di sensibilità connettiva. Non ci viene mai la curiosità di conoscere in profondità la storia della nostra splendida città, scoprire ciò che nei secoli Ella ha rappresentato in termini di civiltà, storia e memoria tattile. Eppure, basterebbe alzare un po’ lo sguardo per potersi accorgere di quanta storia sia trascorsa sotto le sua antiche fondamenta che, senza rendercene conto, calpestiamo in maniera distratta ed irriverente, quanti illustri personaggi le hanno riservato fama e lustro e quanti popoli, infine, questa città l’hanno conquistata, difesa, oppressa, vilipesa e poi liberata, lasciando quasi sempre morte e distruzione, ma anche arte, sviluppo e civiltà.
