    SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AS CONTESTED POLITICAL SPACE: PROTESTING CRUISE TOURISM IN VENICE [ReceiveD 21st October 2020; accepteD February 21st 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.119] AlexanDer Araya López Ca’ Foscari University, Venice < [email protected]> ABSTRACT: Saint Mark’s Square is unquestionably the most famous tourist attraction in Venice, a piazza characterised by its complex history, unique aesthetics anD many allusions to power (given its proximity to the Doge’s Palace anD Saint Mark’s Basilica). This square is the largest open space in the city anD while it is routinely crowDeD with tourists from all over the worlD, political Demonstrations have been prohibiteD since 1997. This article explores Saint Mark’s Square as a contested political space by focusing on the many local struggles against cruise tourism in Venice anD its lagoon. InsteaD of constituting an ‘apolitical’ space, the preferreD uses given to the square by local authorities and tourism stakeholders are manifestly ‘political’, producing a space of leisure and consumption that benefits the economic logic behinD the ‘normal’ functioning of the piazza. Other alternative social anD political uses of the square are not only DiscourageD but banned, which brings into Discussion the Lefebvrian notion of the right to the city: who has access to the centre as a (political) privilegeD space? Phytoplank- ton wet biomass varied between 100 and 600 mg m-.' and its primary production between 30 and 90 mg C m ' d.' The composition of mesozooplankton resembled that of the Adriatic complex only near the port entrances connecting the lagoon to the sea, while in polluted areas it was drastically depleted. Hotel in Venice Mestre TBA Day # 2 (Venice –Padua – Venice Sightseeing) (B) Friday Oct 9 Breakfast in the hotel Teams will transfer by private bus to the fields in the Padua area. Morning Softball Practice After practice team will return to the hotel for a quick change. Afternoon transfer by local transport to Piazzale Roma where we change and transfer to a Vaparetto (Water bus) which will take us to St Mark’s Square. A walking tour of Venice with our local step-on guide. This afternoon’s tour will show us the highlights of Venice, including St. Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge, Bridge of Sighs, The Doge’s Palace, Campanile, and St. Mark’s Cathedral. Free time in Venice center for personal sightseeing and dinner. Dinner on your own and perhaps take an optional Gondola cruise along the Grand Canal. Transfer back to our hotel by public transport.
