CONSERVATION CASEWORK LOG NOTES MARCH 2018 The GT conservation team received 136 new cases in England and TWO cases in Wales during February, in addition to ongoing work on previously logged cases. Written responses were submitted by the GT and/or CGTs for the following cases. In addition to the responses below, 47 ‘No Comment’ responses were lodged by the GT and 5 by CGTs in response to planning applications included in the weekly lists. As previously notified to you, The Gardens Trust, which is the statutory consultee on matters concerning registered parks and gardens, is now working closely with County Gardens Trusts, and the responsibility for commenting on Local Plan Reviews in this context has now passed to Avon Gardens Trust. The Trust notes that Policy BCS22 Conservation and the historic environment in the Core Strategy of June 2011, and Policy DM31 of the Site Allocations and Development Management Policies of July 2014 are proposed to be retained. The Local Plan Review consultation document makes a number of strategic proposals, for example to meet housing need, to provide new transport infrastructure, and in respect of employment, land. Such proposals may, depending on location, detailed siting and design, have an impact on registered and unregistered historic parks and gardens. 1 The Trust does not seek to comment on such proposals at the present time, but would expect to be engaged in its role as statutory consultee as and when the details of such proposals are known. -
Growing Vines Revised
Growing Vines. Jillian Macready. Ickworth, Suffolk. Sometime in 1994 Charles and I went for a walk in the Park; the park belonging to Ickworth House, a National Trust property previously owned by the Bristol family whose ancestor was the Bishop of Derry, one of only two Earl Bishops in English history. From the other side of the lake, we could see the splendid 5 acre walled garden, which once supplied all their vegetable needs. We were looking for somewhere to plant vines; I have a horticultural background and planted Wyken Vineyard and Charles had been in the wine trade but wanted to produce English wine. We were very keen to plant in 1995, it being the centenary year of the National Trust. It was a good time to plant a vineyard, indeed it was urgent, since the English Wine Industry had had several good grape producing years as temperatures rose during the mid 90’s and a planting ban was talked of. This was all explained in a glossy brochure The Vine Terrace at Ickworth presented to the National Trust. Our scheme was approved with unusual speed for the Trust, having beaten all other proposals over the years to revamp the site. This former kitchen garden was home only to a donkey and some sheep, the old Victorian greenhouses having long since gone. We got our skates on and managed to plant half the vineyard with white wine grapes, Bacchus and Auxerrois. On May 13 th 1995 our babies were born, albeit out of wedlock as Charles and I did not marry until 2001. -

Santa Fosca in Torcello and the Middle Byzantine Churches in Eastern Greece: Preliminary Comparison and Remarks on Common Features and Differences
Athens Journal of History January 2016 Santa Fosca in Torcello and the Middle Byzantine Churches in Eastern Greece: Preliminary Comparison and Remarks on Common Features and Differences By Antonella Manzo The main aim of this work is to critically examine Santa Fosca building period through the analysis of the similarities as well as the differences with some churches located in Greece and belonging to the so-called octagonal domed type. In fact, since the second half of the Nineteenth century a historiographical tradition has compared Santa Fosca with these Greek Middle-Byzantine churches, where eight supports, piers or columns, arranged in a regular or irregular octagon, receive the loads from the cupola. The comparison is based on the direct analysis of these buildings: the structural configuration, the constructive materials and techniques as well as the affinities in decoration, occurring both inside and outside, are under investigation. This contribution offers a new perspective, from which it could be possible to study the period of erection of the Venetian church, a topic that is still object of debate among the scientific community. Introduction Torcello is an island belonging to the Northern Venetian Laguna, which lives its golden age during the X-XI century AD: in his Administrando Imperio of 927 Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus defines Torcello as emporion mega, to testify the great importance of its intense trades with the Orient. The church of Santa Fosca is located on the island at the Southern side of the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, whose origins date back to the inscription of 639 AD, discovered during the excavations of 1895. -

Photo: AP/Mike Groll ALBANY, N.Y. — A modern-day glassblower believes he has unraveled the mysteries of Venetian glassmaking that was crafted during the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a cultural movement in Europe that lasted from the 1300s to the 1600s. During that period, glassmakers' secrets were closely guarded by the Venetian government. Anyone who spoke of them could be killed. Specially Skilled Craftsmen Today's glassblowers work with gas-fired furnaces and electric-powered ovens called kilns. Their studios are well lit and have proper air ventilation. The craftsmen of Murano, an island near Venice, Italy, did not have such technology. Yet they turned out pieces of art popular in museums today. The techniques, or the methods they used to make the objects, remained sought after for centuries. William Gudenrath spent years studying Venetian glass collections at American and European museums. He compared them with newer glasswork from Venice. He experimented on his own and traveled to Italy many times. Gudenrath combined all of his knowledge to produce an online guide. Guiding Modern Artists The guide is called "The Techniques of Renaissance Venetian Glassworking." It was recently posted on the website of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. -

An aperitivo is not “Happy Hour” or an excuse to drink to oblivion. Italians blame many ailments on their livers so the aperitivo has digestive purposes. The Cinzano brothers flavored their vermouth, (its name derived from the German wormwood), with Wermut, its main ingredient, and with over 30 aromatic plants from the nearby Alps: herbs, barks, and roots such as juniper, gentian and coriander. -

Aside from their sea-level location, they are both characterized by large populations, valuable infrastructure and real estate, and economic dependence on tourism, as well as the availability of advanced scientific data and technological expertize. Yet their responses have been quite different. We examine the biophysical environments of the two cities, as well as their socio- economic features, administrative arrangements vulnerabilities, and responses to sea level rise and flooding. Our study uses a qualitative approach to illustrate how adaptation policies have emerged in these two coastal cities. Based on this information, we critically compare the different adaptive responses of Venice and Miami and suggest what each city may learn from the 1234567890();,: 1234567890();,: other, as well as offer lessons for other vulnerable coastal cities. In the two cases presented here it would seem that adaptation to SLR has not yet led to a reformulation of the problem or a structural transformation of the relevant institutions. Decision-makers must address the complex issue of rising seas with a combination of scientific knowledge, socio-economic expertize, and good governance. In this regard, the “hi-tech” approach of Venice has generated problems of its own (as did the flood control projects in South Florida over half a century ago), while the increasing public mobilization in Miami appears more promising. -

SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AS CONTESTED POLITICAL SPACE: PROTESTING CRUISE TOURISM IN VENICE [ReceiveD 21st October 2020; accepteD February 21st 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.119] AlexanDer Araya López Ca’ Foscari University, Venice < [email protected]> ABSTRACT: Saint Mark’s Square is unquestionably the most famous tourist attraction in Venice, a piazza characterised by its complex history, unique aesthetics anD many allusions to power (given its proximity to the Doge’s Palace anD Saint Mark’s Basilica). This square is the largest open space in the city anD while it is routinely crowDeD with tourists from all over the worlD, political Demonstrations have been prohibiteD since 1997. This article explores Saint Mark’s Square as a contested political space by focusing on the many local struggles against cruise tourism in Venice anD its lagoon. InsteaD of constituting an ‘apolitical’ space, the preferreD uses given to the square by local authorities and tourism stakeholders are manifestly ‘political’, producing a space of leisure and consumption that benefits the economic logic behinD the ‘normal’ functioning of the piazza. Other alternative social anD political uses of the square are not only DiscourageD but banned, which brings into Discussion the Lefebvrian notion of the right to the city: who has access to the centre as a (political) privilegeD space? The article examines protest acts undertaken by the collective No Grandi Navi, particularly the political events that took place after the MSC Opera collision with another tourist vessel anD the Dock in June 2019. Classes held on site alternate with lectures and discussions that place material in its art historical context. Students explore Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque examples at many locations that show in one place the rich visual materials of all these periods, as well as materials and works acquired through conquest or collection. Students will carry out visually- and historically-based assignments in Venice. Upon return, undergraduates complete a paper based on site study, and graduate students submit a paper researched in Venice. The Marciana and Querini Stampalia libraries are available to all students, and those doing graduate work also have access to the Cini Foundation Library. Class meetings (refer to calendar) include lectures at the Università Internazionale dell’ Arte (UIA) and on-site visits to churches, architectural landmarks, and museums of Venice.
