Bunce, M.S. Overcoming Adversity The King’s Speech – an Award Winning Movie Recently a British movie, “The King’s Speech,” overwhelmingly won the Oscar award for best picture. The movie received many other prestigious and highly coveted awards as well. The stories, scenes, characters, dramatic episodes, and the imagination that goes with movie-making have immense impact on the viewers. A King’s Adversity I find stories of people who have overcome adversity deeply moving, and inspiring. One story of overcoming a great impediment, one that seems insurmountable, is the story of King George the VI. I’d like to briefly summarize his story because I think you’ll find his struggle with stuttering and overcoming this handicap most interesting. The story also highlights how confidence-building measures, encouraging spouses and friends, and simple therapies help overcome adversity in life. Albert – King George VI King George VI was the last Emperor of British India, and his face occupied a prominent place in coins and currency notes of British India; and it continued to be so in the period immediately after the independence of India from the British rule.

Hollywood Chinese By Erica Marcus Published: April 10, 2008 Hollywood Chinese: A Very Queer Story An Interview with Filmmaker Arthur Dong Filmmaker Arthur Dong, who created Coming Out Under Fire, Licensed to Kill, Family Fundamentals and other LGBT films, has finished a new film Hollywood Chinese, a vivid and entertaining journey tracking the experience of Chinese Americans in America’s film industry. The film opens in the Bay Area on April 11 at San Francisco’s Sundance Kabuki Cinemas and at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater. A San Francisco native, Arthur Dong Whowould have thought that it would be a heterosexual Chinese recently spoke to Bay Times about the director (Ang Lee) to bring the a great gay love story (Brokeback film. Mountain) to the silver screen. (Bay Times) So, you’re going to be at the screening in San Francisco on Friday and in Oakland on Saturday. You’ve assembled one hell of a cast - Ang Lee, Wayne Wang, Joan Chen, David Henry Huang, B.D. Wong, Nancy Kwan, Amy Tan and Fu Man Chu. But I gotta ask - is it a queer film? (Arthur Dong) Am I queer? No, I mean is the film, Hollywood Chinese, queer? That’s the answer. Am I queer? Ah ha! So there. Okay, identity politics is so passé. You got me, but now I’m curious. Do you believe that a queer sensibility is embedded in one’s vision? I believe that my films are embedded with my vision and I happen to be a gay man. I’m not saying all gay people produce gay products, but I do.

Cinema of the Self: A Theory of Cinematic Selfhood & Practices of Neoliberal Portraiture Milosz Paul Rosinski Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge June 2017 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Declaration This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It is not substantially the same as any that I have submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for a degree or diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. The dissertation is formatted in accordance to the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) style. This dissertation does not exceed the word limit of 80,000 words (as specified by the Modern and Medieval Languages Degree Committee). Summary This thesis examines the philosophical notion of selfhood in visual representation. I introduce the self as a modern and postmodern concept and argue that there is a loss of selfhood in contemporary culture. Via Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, Gerhard Richter and the method of deconstruction of language, I theorise selfhood through the figurative and literal analysis of duration, the frame, and the mirror.

  • Perceptual Realism and Embodied Experience in the Travelogue Genre
Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 229-258 Perceptual Realism and Embodied Experience in the Travelogue Genre By Perla Carrillo Quiroga This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the travelogue genre while drawing a parallel with a Bazanian teleology of cinematic realism. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling.

  • Gender and the Family in Contemporary Chinese-Language Film Remakes
Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience.
