Supremely well written bookBy Heidi BuroseSpellbinding description of a family life in the South. The tormented children by a brutal father and a "family loyalty" obsessed mother try in their own way to survive and make it in adult life, a task almost overwhelming. Love for each other allow the children to survive and acknowledge the tremendous power their heritage of the South has over them.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I Would Recommend This Book to Friends That Enjoy Literature and Long Books.By Annie AthensActually this novel is like a book of short stories related by Tom and the dialogue and descriptions are so well written that you do actually experience the dramas that the family went through. The only reason that I did give it 4 stars was that at one point in the book I did find it rather tedious. I didn't see the film, and having read the book I cannot imagine how it could have captured Tom's life as his thoughts give more drama to the situations
