Networking Knowledge Honey, You Know I Can’t Hear You (Jun. 2017) Honey, You Know I Can’t Hear You When You Aren’t in the Room: Key Female Filmmakers Prove the Importance of Having a Female in the Writing Room DR ROSANNE WELCH, Stephens College MFA in Screenwriting; California State University, Fullerton ABSTRACT The need for more diversity in Hollywood films and television is currently being debated by scholars and content makers alike, but where is the proof that more diverse writers will create more diverse material? Since all forms of art are subjective, there is no perfect way to prove the importance of having female writers in the room except through samples of qualitative case studies of various female writers across the history of film. By studying the writing of several female screenwriters – personal correspondence, interviews and their writing for the screen – this paper will begin to prove that having a female voice in the room has made a difference in several prominent films. It will further hypothesise that greater representation can only create greater opportunity for more female stories and voices to be heard. Research for my PhD dissertation ‘Married: With Screenplay’ involved the work of several prominent female screenwriters across the first century of filmmaking, including Anita Loos, Dorothy Parker, Frances Goodrich and Joan Didion. In all of their memoirs and other writings about working on screenplays, each mentioned the importance of (often) being the lone woman in the room during pitches and during the development of a screenplay. Goodrich summarised all their experiences concisely when she wrote, ‘I’m always the only woman working on the picture and I hold the fate of the women [characters] in my hand… I’ll fight for what the gal will or will not do, and I can be completely unfeminine about it.’ Also, the rise of female directors, such as Barbra Streisand or female production executives, such as Kathleen Kennedy, prove that one of the greatest assets to having a female voice in the room is the ability to invite other women inside.

Everyone is welcome. Why this course • This course is an exploration of the human experience of memory, trauma, dissociation, and amnesia. • Suggested Honors English Reading List
English Honors9 Reading List You may not read books more than once for credit (for summer reading, for class study, and/or for Reading Workshop). You must read three (3) books from this list. You will complete “My Reader’s Journal” for these three (3) books. Due on Monday, August 17. The following is a list of suggested reading for college-bound students. My suggestion for you is to select a book based on one or more of these three criteria: your knowledge of the author, a skimming of the book (read the cover or jacket, a bit of the beginning, and a portion somewhere in the middle.), or advice of others who have recommended the book. You may pick up most of these books at your local library or the Norwell Library Media Center. You may also purchase them at your local bookstores—it’s sometimes nice to have your own copy so that you can write in the book. Several of these books are also available as ebooks. If you have an ereader and your parents don’t mind purchasing the book, I would suggest this format. (Ebooks increase vocabulary because they allow the user to easily look up definitions in context.) I cannot promise that all the books on this list will be free of objectionable material. What is objectionable to one may not be objectionable to another. Choose wisely. • From Buddy Film to Bromance: Masculinity and Male Melodrama Since 1969
FROM BUDDY FILM TO BROMANCE: MASCULINITY AND MALE MELODRAMA SINCE 1969 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Amy J. Woodworth May 2014 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Miles Orvell, Advisory Chair, English Dr. Patricia Melzer, German Dr. Oliver Gaycken, English, University of Maryland Dr. Laura Levitt, External Member, Religion © by Amy J. Woodworth 2014 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Men’s tears are considered rare, and women’s tears are considered profusive. Thus, we tend to think of tearjerkers and melodrama as the province of weepy women viewers. However, if we look back at the last several decades of Hollywood filmmaking, melodramas focused on men—or “male weepies”—have been a steady staple of American cinema. This dissertation explores cycles of male melodramas since 1969, placing them in their socio-historical contexts and examining the ways that they participate in public discourses about men, masculinity, and gender roles. Melodrama’s focus on victims, bids for virtue, and idealizations of not how things are, but how they should be, have made it a fitting and flexible mode for responding to the changing social landscape of America since the rights movements of the 1960s. Specifically, these films consider both the ways that white capitalist patriarchy has circumscribed the public and private lives of men and the ways that advancements of women and racial minorities are impacting (white) men’s lives. This study analyzes the rhetorical effects of these films through both textual evidence and popular reception. Chapters are organized by chronology and subgenre, discussing buddy films of the late 1960s and early 1970s (Midnight Cowboy, The Last Detail, and Scarecrow), paternal melodramas of the late 1970s and early 1980s (The Great Santini, Kramer vs.

I N T R O D U C T I O N JERROLD R. BRANDELL Freud’s eyes fall on the doll which is propped up on the couch. After a pause: FREUD Cecily, how did your father come to give you the doll? Cecily has a prolonged nervous coughing spell. FREUD (Gently suggesting) Perhaps you should lie down on the couch. —From the screenplay to Freud, 1962 Psychoanalysis, with more visibility now than at any other time in its hun- dred-year history, continues to capture the public imagination and to excite controversy. Despite the implementation of draconian measures by health maintenance organizations that limit mental health treatment, and the pro- mulgation of such aberrations as single-session psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy are, by recent estimates, practiced by greater numbers of clinicians than at any point in the past.1 Increasingly, psy- chologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and others, once barred from psychoanalytic institutes, have sought such training. Psychoanalytic ideas, now more or less adrift from mainstream American psychiatry, which 1 2 Jerrold R. Brandell has become increasingly biological, have also found fertile ground in such aca- demic disciplines as literature, anthropology, linguistics, and film studies. Indeed, Hollywood has never been more interested in the treatment process and relationship in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, to which a spate of recent films—Girl, Interrupted (Mangold, 1999), Instinct (Turteltaub, 1999), Good Will Hunting (Van Sant, 1997), The Sixth Sense (Shyamalan, 1999), and the popular HBO series, The Sopranos (Chase, 1998)—attests. This cultural fascination with the unique intimacy of the treatment situation is also reflected in the popularity of literary narratives about the therapeutic process.

  • Using Film to Teach Psychology: a Resource of Film Study Guides
USING FILM TO TEACH PSYCHOLOGY: A RESOURCE OF FILM STUDY GUIDES Elizabeth M. Nelson, Christian Brothers University (2002 Instructional Resource Award Recipient) Overview This 106-page resource offers instructors tools for using films to enhance their instruction. Student evaluations consistently indicate that films help them learn the topics, provide an alternative to traditional lectures, and give them a different point of view. However, students also say they do not like to view films if they do not understand the relevancy of the film to the course material. This resource gives teachers of psychology additional tools for using film, such as tested study guides, sample syllabi, student papers, references, and Internet resources. The film study guides contained in this resource have been used in a variety of psychology classes, and may be applicable to a variety of other courses.
