CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples. -

One Thing I've Come to Love About My New Home, the University of Florida
President Kent Fuchs Inaugural Address “The Orange and Blue Horizon Beyond” Friday, Dec. 4, 2015 (3 p.m.) University Auditorium One thing I’ve come to love about my new home, the University of Florida, is the sky. It can be bold and blue. It can be mysterious and dark. Looking up at Century Tower and the palm trees in silhouette against the dramatic sky is, for me, a constant metaphor of possibility and promise. This spring, we moved commencement ceremonies outdoors to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. We worried about the prospect of the daily rain drenching thousands of graduates, their families, and the president. But for four evenings in a row the sky resolved into stunning shades of orange and blue. Page 2 of 25 I’d like to think the commencement sky was putting on a special show for the University of Florida. But this sky is telling us something more. It represents far greater horizons for UF than we have seen before. This sky is, for me, a reminder that this great university can climb sunward, and as John G. Magee put in his poem “High Flight,” “join the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds – and do a hundred things we have not yet dreamed of.” While Century Tower and our hallowed traditions and missions will always be here, in the foreground, it is time for us to explore a much bigger beyond. We are accustomed to thinking about our extraordinarily comprehensive academics on one contiguous campus, our athletics, our beloved land-grant mission and our identity in certain, timeworn ways. -

For many of you, the weight of being a college student during a challenging year also comes while working, parenting, caretaking and other life activities that most community college students face while attending college. That is why your achievement that we celebrate today is particularly momentous, and why you and your family should take great pride in your accomplishment. Your resiliency and commitment has brought you to this milestone today, and that experience will contribute to your success in the future. The first issue was released on March 14,[2] and the final issue of the arc was released on June 6, Buffy is leading a squad of Slayers —including three named LeahRowenaand Satsu —in a raid on a large, dilapidated church protected by a forcefield. She reveals that there are at least Slayers now active, of whom are working with the Scooby Gang spread over ten squads. There are two Slayers posing as decoys of her, lest she become an easy target; one literally underground and another in Rome publicly partying and dating the Immortal. Working with Xanderwho is running things at Slayer headquarters in Scotland Buffy refers to him as a Volume 1 despite his objections with a team of computer workers, psychics and mystics, including a Slayer named Renee, Buffy Volume 1 her squad find three monstrous demons. There are also three dead humans. The demons are killed in battle. The humans have odd symbols carved in their chest and there are nearby automatic weapons. Buffy tells Xander to send a copy of the symbol to Giles Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Long Way Home Season 8, when another Slayer finds the machine that generated the force field, also presumably belonging to the victims. There is a shadowed spy nearby. -

EXPANDING THE VISION OF REIMAGINE MINNESOTA: A Collective Education Roadmap for Action WHAT IF EVERY CHILD, REGARDLESS OF RACE, POVERTY STATUS, OR ZIP CODE, COULD ACCESS A QUALITY K-12 EDUCATION? What if that quality education created a foundation upon which every child was poised to reach their fullest potential? We know Minnesota is among the worst in the nation for racial disparities in K-12 education. We also know we can’t grant our way out of this crisis. Expanding the Vision of Reimagine Minnesota: A Collective Education Roadmap for Action provides evidence-based solutions that have the potential to be transformational for our community. Read, learn, and join us in transforming our K-12 education to help every child reach their fullest potential. Why now? This report comes at a time of urgent public discourse about the need to identify evidence- based solutions to Minnesota’s unacceptable gaps in educational equity. We’ve read other reports, billboards, and op-eds that prove the challenge is real. However, instead of simply examining the problem, we set out to build on the perspectives of those most proximate to the issues to help drive solutions. Namely, parents, families, teachers, school leaders, and superintendents. What’s Reimagine Minnesota? Since 2016, a group of superintendents from the Association of Metropolitan School Districts has been engaging in a process to reimagine the future of education in Minnesota. As part of that process, the superintendents held a series of events at which they gathered input from more than 3,000 students, parents, cultural representatives, community members, business leaders, and other education stakeholders, all of whom were invited to conceptualize a new model of education that is designed for the success of all students. -

The Decade Ahead: UF Goals and Plan Forward Report of the Goal-Setting Task Force December 2015 I. Introduction The University of Florida has come a great distance in its journey to becoming a premier university that the nation and world look to for leadership. From origins in Lake City, UF opened in Gainesville in 1906 with three buildings and 102 students. Today, the university is one of the most comprehensive in the country, with 50,000 students, 5,500 faculty, a $707 million research operation – and top-ranked academic and research programs across 16 colleges that together offer more than 300 undergraduate majors and graduate degrees. This progress occurred over three eras: beginnings, growth, and excellence. UF’s first president was Andrew Sledd (1904 to 1909). Under President Sledd’s leadership, the university embraced its charter as one of the nation’s land-grant universities dedicated to providing “liberal and practical education” to Americans. With that mission, and at the instigation of its second president, Albert Murphree (1909 to 1927), UF by 1927 established colleges of law, agriculture, engineering, arts and sciences, pharmacy, architecture and what was then called commerce & journalism (later, the colleges of business and journalism & communications). The university built upon this foundation in the 1930s under the leadership of President John Tigert (1928 to 1947). President Tigert led the creation of the graduate school and the awarding of UF’s first doctoral degrees in 1934. Dr. Tigert also created the University Endowment Corporation, the forerunner to the UF Foundation; built Florida Field, then a 22,000-seat football stadium; and created the General College for freshmen and sophomores.
