  • CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.

The first section examines the location of the members of the Texas Senate and of the Texas House on the liberal-conservative dimension along which legislative politics takes place in Austin. In both chambers, every Republican is more conservative than every Democrat and every Democrat is more liberal than every Republican. There does, however, exist substantial ideological diversity within the respective Democratic and Republican delegations in each chamber. The second section explores the extent to which each senator and each representative was on the winning side of the non-lopsided final passage votes (FPVs) on which they voted.

    - Exceptional Item #1 - Restore Cultural Districts Project (CDP) Grants Base-Level Funding TOTAL: $5,000,000 over the biennium. In 2017, the 85th legislature cut funding for this grant program entirely for fiscal years 2018 and 2019, despite the Office of the Governor's and the Legislative Budget Board's joint determination that this money was in fact part of the agency's base level appropriations. Current and future cultural districts are in need of staffing support, infrastructure (signage and capital improvements), marketing budgets, and event underwriting. Adequate funding for this program is critical to ensure Texas' competitiveness with respect to similar programs in neighboring states such as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. - Exceptional Item #2 - Arts Healing Grants for Active Service Members and Veterans TOTAL: $500,000 over the biennium. Texas is home to a significant and increasing number of active-duty service members and veterans, and their families, who experience severe physical and/or psychological hardships related to their military deployment. A wealth of research confirms the therapeutic benefits of arts-based programs for these constituents. Building on its experiences at the 2018 Texas Creative Forces Arts and Military Conference at Fort Hood, which included Karen Pence, Second Lady of the United States, and Cecilia Abbott, First Lady of Texas, as participants, the agency is requesting grant funding for organizations to provide arts-based programming to serve these populations on active military bases and in their surrounding communities across the state. - Exceptional Item #3 - CAPPS Financials Implementation TOTAL: $50,000 over the biennium. The Comptroller of Public Accounts has selected the agency for transition to the CAPPS Financials module during the 2021 fiscal year.

  • Expanding the Vision of Reimagine Minnesota Report
EXPANDING THE VISION OF REIMAGINE MINNESOTA: A Collective Education Roadmap for Action WHAT IF EVERY CHILD, REGARDLESS OF RACE, POVERTY STATUS, OR ZIP CODE, COULD ACCESS A QUALITY K-12 EDUCATION? What if that quality education created a foundation upon which every child was poised to reach their fullest potential? We know Minnesota is among the worst in the nation for racial disparities in K-12 education. We also know we can’t grant our way out of this crisis. Expanding the Vision of Reimagine Minnesota: A Collective Education Roadmap for Action provides evidence-based solutions that have the potential to be transformational for our community. Read, learn, and join us in transforming our K-12 education to help every child reach their fullest potential. Why now? This report comes at a time of urgent public discourse about the need to identify evidence- based solutions to Minnesota’s unacceptable gaps in educational equity. We’ve read other reports, billboards, and op-eds that prove the challenge is real. However, instead of simply examining the problem, we set out to build on the perspectives of those most proximate to the issues to help drive solutions. Namely, parents, families, teachers, school leaders, and superintendents. What’s Reimagine Minnesota? Since 2016, a group of superintendents from the Association of Metropolitan School Districts has been engaging in a process to reimagine the future of education in Minnesota. As part of that process, the superintendents held a series of events at which they gathered input from more than 3,000 students, parents, cultural representatives, community members, business leaders, and other education stakeholders, all of whom were invited to conceptualize a new model of education that is designed for the success of all students.
