Once you walk across that stage, you will be forever transformed. From here on out you are a university graduate. Nothing can ever change that. As many of you know, MSU Denver experienced a graduation of its own last year. After 47 years as Metropolitan State College of Denver, we became a university. Aligning our name with our reality was more than a semantic exercise: By becoming a university, we have erased all doubts about our identity and increased the value of your degree in the minds of the public and employers. When you receive your diploma, it will read “Metropolitan State University of Denver.” You can rest assured that your degree will reflect the rigor and relevancy of your MSU Denver education. In fact, a new study from College Measures/Colorado Department of Higher Education shows that MSU Denver graduates make more money during their first year of work than graduates from many other Colorado schools. Through relevant learning and professional experiences, your MSU Denver education has uniquely positioned you to meet the complex challenges of the 21st century, while also equipping you to contribute to the workforce, the education of your family and the health of our community. That’s the power of education: Whether you start a business, accept a promotion, begin a new career or pursue further studies, your MSU Denver education will touch others—through the creation of jobs, your greater efficacy, and your additional skills and wisdom. The education you’ve worked so hard for belongs to you and to everyone you influence and inspire. This ceremony marks the beginning of your next chapter. Use the goodwill of this day to fulfill the promise of your MSU Denver degree by employing the persistence, work ethic and determination that earned you this diploma. Spread the word about the value of higher education as you see its rewards unfold in your life. And stay in touch with your scrappy, forward-thinking alma mater. Once a Roadrunner, always a Roadrunner! Wishing you the best of luck, Stephen M. Herschberger Bachelor of Science – Business Marketing Bachelor of Science – Business Management Marc Herschberger is a summa cum laude graduate (GPA 3.92), the Outstanding Student for the School of Business, and a recipient of both the MSU Denver President’s Scholarship and the American Wholesale Marketers Association Ray Foley Memorial Scholarship. He’s also one of the best soccer players ever to come through the MSU Denver Athletics Program. During his four years, Herschberger helped take the team to the top 25 and qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament; this year he served as captain. He was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and the Capital One First Team Academic All American of the Year for 2012, meaning that out of about 5,000 students who play Division II men’s soccer, Herschberger was chosen as the top student and top athlete. “Marc is the role model for all students,” says Joan McDermott, director of athletics. “He is one of the most special student-athletes to ever be a part of MSU Denver.” A four-year member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Herschberger also served as fundraising coordinator for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, helping raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and local food and clothing banks. He also volunteered at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association tournament, helped a local financial services company clean up highway trash and debris on South Santa Fe Drive, and volunteered for Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity. This year Herschberger interned at Revenue River Marketing LLC in Littleton and worked part time at a retail soccer store in Westminster. How did he manage all these commitments? “It comes down to the work ethic that my parents burned into me as a young kid,” Herschberger says, explaining that his truck-driver father and paralegal mother have worked hard all their lives. “They would always make sure I spent time doing homework before going out to play. In college, I knew I needed to keep my scholarship. It’s all about priorities. You know when practice is, you know when class is, and you schedule everything else around that. There’s very little down time for student-athletes.” Looking forward, Herschberger hopes to
