History of the Ceremonial Mace For centuries, in academic and ecclesiastical processionals, a mace has been carried by a marshal to symbolize the official opening and closing of a formal event. The 2011 presentation of the mace, donated by the classes of 1956-59, formally incorporated this prestigious piece of regalia, along with its processional, into the academic processions at commencements for all future generations of James F. Byrnes High School.

The senior class of 2020 appreciates your attendance at our commencement, but because this is our final time together as a class, we feel that it is not the time for individual rejoicing. As a congressman and senator he demonstrated outstanding talents and was acclaimed generally as the most effective legislator of his day. He sat with distinction upon our highest court but unhesitatingly resigned to devote himself selflessly first, as a war mobilizer to the winning of World War II and later, as Secretary of State to directing our foreign policy towards the goal of world peace. In all these undertakings, he reflected credit and honor both upon his native state and upon himself. Our school honors him specially though because as Governor of South Carolina, he fathered an educational renaissance in his native state, the benefits of which will endure as long as South Carolina itself.
