    B”H Introduction In our first article on the AOJS, we explored interactions between Rebbe and Dr. Offenbacher — its founder. In this article, we will make note of additional interactions the Rebbe had with the AOJS. While the full story of the relationship between the Rebbe and AOJS is worthy of a more detailed study, we will focus here on a few specific interactions. Dr. Cyril Domb Professor Dr. Cyril (Yechiel) Domb (5681-5772) was born in North London, England, into a Chasidic Jewish family. He was deeply affected and inspired by his grandparents who were deeply religious Jews. He, in turn, retained this deep religious feeling, was meticulous in his observance of the Mitzvos — which always took precedence over activities for professional advancement1— and spent much of his free time devoted to Talmudic studies (including attending a daily Daf Yomi Shiur). Dr. Domb led a long and fruitful career in the study of Theoretical physics and statistical mechanics, lecturing at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, King’s College, London University, Bar-Ilan University, University of Maryland, Yeshiva University, Hebrew University, Jerusalem College of Technology and the Weizmann Institute. Shortly before making aliyah to Israel, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. After encountering AOJS members in 5718, during a sabbatical year at the University of Maryland2, he helped found and lead a sister organization of the AOJS in London, in 57223. In 1971, Domb became the general editor of a book series which was sponsored by the AOJS, the purpose of which was to systematically present material which could be used for Jewish education.

    Western Europe GREAT BRITAIN q PERIOD from July 1, 1954, through June 30, 1955, was an eventful one JL in Great Britain. It saw the dissolution of Parliament, accompanied by the retirement of Sir Winston Churchill and his replacement as prime min- ister by Sir Anthony Eden. Matters of special concern to British Jews were, internationally, Great Britain's relations with the Arab states, the trials of Rumanian Zionists, and the rearmament of Germany. On the domestic front, British Jewry combatted a parliamentary campaign against Shechita, the Jewish method of slaughter. In the general election of May 1955 the Conservative party increased its majority from seventeen to sixty. It polled 906,000 votes more than Labor, obtaining successes even in Lancashire where foreign competition in the textile industry was causing considerable anxiety. Of the seventeen Com- munist candidates, none were elected; fifteen lost their deposits by not se- curing one-eighth of the total votes cast in the constituencies in which they ran. Of the fifty-six Jewish candidates, thirty-nine were Labor, ten Conserva- tive, five Liberal, and two Communist. All the sixteen Jewish members in the last House of Commons were re-elected. There were now seventeen Jewish Labor members and one Conservative. The government had two Jewish members, both in the House of Lords—the Marquess of Reading, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Lord Mancroft, Undersecretary at the Home Office. The only anti-Jewish incident during the election was the painting of some slogans on walls in the Aston Division of Birmingham where there was a Jewish candidate, Julius Silverman.

It argues that youth movements are key sites for the formation and transmission of communal identities into subsequent generations. It entails institutional studies of three Jewish youth organisations: the Jewish Lads’ Brigade, the Victoria Boys’ and Girls’ Club, and the Maccabi Union and is divided accordingly, with chapters devoted to each. The thesis examines the preferred identities that each club sought to impose on their members, using these identities as case studies for the wider British Jewish community.

    Phenomena, Models and Understanding The Lenz-Ising Model and Critical Phenomena 1920–1971 Martin Niss 2005 Preface This dissertation has been prepared as the main component in the fulfilment of the re- quirements for the Ph.D. degree at the Department of Mathematics and Physics (IMFUFA) at the University of Roskilde, Denmark. The work has been carried out in the period from February 2001 to March 2005, interrupted by a leave of absence in the academic year 2002-2003 due to my reception of a scholarship to study mathematics abroad. Professor Jeppe C. Dyre was my supervisor. Acknowledgements I would very much like to thank my supervisor Jeppe. The widespread allegations of unethical practices in medical experimenta- tions on humans have recently been substantiated and carefully documented in a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine.1 The article, which was extensively quoted in the daily press, cited twenty-two examples, out of fifty originally submitted, of "unethical or ethically questionable studies" involving hundreds of patients. In the view of the author, "it is evident that in many of the examples presented, the investigators have risked the health or the life of their subjects." In many cases no "informed consent" was obtained either at all or under conditions which would render such consent meaningful.
