The Cosmic Calendar
The Cosmic Calendar Astronomers believe that the Cosmos in which the Solar System and Earth resides is about 16 billion years old. We believe the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old and base this on carbon dating of rocks both from Earth and the Moon. However, billions of years is a very hard thing to grasp! Fortunately there is a creative way to get a grasp on this kind of time and that is with the "cosmic calendar" which Carl Sagan created and popularized. We set the Big Bang on January 1st and divided the events into one year, with now being the first day of the next new year. Before you read further, take a guess at which month humans enter into the calendar! The first stars and galaxies did not begin to form until the universe had cooled and expanded. Our Milky Way galaxy comes into existence on May 1st of our calendar. Our Solar System forms September 9th and the Earth on September 14th. The "infant" Earth was a hot, molten and toxic place, nothing like the paradise we know today. As Earth cooled, the first rocks solidified on October 2nd. The oldest known fossils, nothing more complex than bacteria and bluegreen algae, appear October 9th on our cosmic calendar. These early life forms reproduced by splitting cells. Sexes did not begin as a means of reproduction until about November first. The most basic plants which used photosynthesis to get energy, appear on November 12th. The first cells with nuclei, eukaryotes, appear on November 15th, and begin to flourish immediately. -

chapter 2 Charles and Ray Eames’s Powers of Ten as Memento Mori In a pantheon of potential documentaries to discuss as memento mori, Powers of Ten (1968/1977) stands out as one of the most prominent among them. As one of the definitive works of Charles and Ray Eames’s many successes, Pow- ers reveals the Eameses as masterful designers of experiences that communi- cate compelling ideas. Perhaps unexpectedly even for many familiar with their work, one of those ideas has to do with memento mori. The film Powers of Ten: A Film Dealing with the Relative Size of Things in the Universe and the Effect of Adding Another Zero (1977) is a revised and up- dated version of an earlier film, Rough Sketch of a Proposed Film Dealing with the Powers of Ten and the Relative Size of Things in the Universe (1968). Both were made in the United States, produced by the Eames Office, and are widely available on dvd as Volume 1: Powers of Ten through the collection entitled The Films of Charles & Ray Eames, which includes several volumes and many short films and also online through the Eames Office and on YouTube (http://www . eamesoffice.com/ the-work/powers-of-ten/ accessed 27 May 2016). The 1977 version of Powers is in color and runs about nine minutes and is the primary focus for the discussion that follows.1 Ralph Caplan (1976) writes that “[Powers of Ten] is an ‘idea film’ in which the idea is so compellingly objectified as to be palpably understood in some way by almost everyone” (36). -

Chaisson Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 USA [email protected] Abstract Nature’s many varied complex systems—including galaxies, stars, planets, life, and society—are islands of order within the increasingly disordered Universe. All organized systems are subject to physical, biological or cultural evolution, which together comprise the grander interdisciplinary subject of cosmic evolution. A wealth of observational data supports the hypothesis that increasingly complex systems evolve unceasingly, uncaringly, and unpredictably from big bang to humankind. This is global history greatly extended, big history with a scientific basis, and natural history broadly portrayed across ~14 billion years of time. Human beings and our cultural inventions are not special, unique, or apart from Nature; rather, we are an integral part of a universal evolutionary process connecting all such complex systems throughout space and time. Such evolution writ large has significant potential to unify the natural sciences into a holistic understanding of who we are and whence we came. No new science (beyond frontier, non-equilibrium thermodynamics) is needed to describe cosmic evolution’s major milestones at a deep and empirical level. Quantitative models and experimental tests imply that a remarkable simplicity underlies the emergence and growth of complexity for a wide spectrum of known and diverse systems. Energy is a principal facilitator of the rising complexity of ordered systems within the expanding Universe; energy flows are as central to life and society as they are to stars and galaxies. -

B”H Introduction In our first article on the AOJS, we explored interactions between Rebbe and Dr. Offenbacher — its founder. In this article, we will make note of additional interactions the Rebbe had with the AOJS. While the full story of the relationship between the Rebbe and AOJS is worthy of a more detailed study, we will focus here on a few specific interactions. Dr. Cyril Domb Professor Dr. Cyril (Yechiel) Domb (5681-5772) was born in North London, England, into a Chasidic Jewish family. He was deeply affected and inspired by his grandparents who were deeply religious Jews. He, in turn, retained this deep religious feeling, was meticulous in his observance of the Mitzvos — which always took precedence over activities for professional advancement1— and spent much of his free time devoted to Talmudic studies (including attending a daily Daf Yomi Shiur). Dr. Domb led a long and fruitful career in the study of Theoretical physics and statistical mechanics, lecturing at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, King’s College, London University, Bar-Ilan University, University of Maryland, Yeshiva University, Hebrew University, Jerusalem College of Technology and the Weizmann Institute. Shortly before making aliyah to Israel, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. After encountering AOJS members in 5718, during a sabbatical year at the University of Maryland2, he helped found and lead a sister organization of the AOJS in London, in 57223. In 1971, Domb became the general editor of a book series which was sponsored by the AOJS, the purpose of which was to systematically present material which could be used for Jewish education. -

NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF» O CTOBER 2017 IMMIGRANTS AND NOBEL PRIZES : 1901- 2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Immigrants have been awarded 39 percent, or 33 of 85, of the Nobel Prizes won by Americans in Chemistry, Medicine and Physics since 2000. In 2017, the sole American winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was an immigrant, Joachim Frank, a Columbia University professor born in Germany. Immigrant Reiner Weiss, who was born in Germany and came to the United States as a teenager, was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics, sharing it with two other Americans, Kip S. Thorne and Barry C. Barish. In 2016, all 6 American winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and scientific fields were immigrants. These achievements by immigrants point to the gains to America of welcoming talent from across the globe. It does not mean America should welcome only Nobel Prize winners. Such a policy would be impossible to implement, since most immigrant Nobel Prize winners enter the United States many years before being awarded this honor. Most people immigrate to another country in their 20s, particularly employment-based immigrants, who either study in America or come here to work shortly after obtaining a degree abroad. The average of age of Nobel Prize winners at the time of the award is 59.5 years, according to economist Mark J.
