The Cosmic Calendar
The Cosmic Calendar Astronomers believe that the Cosmos in which the Solar System and Earth resides is about 16 billion years old. We believe the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old and base this on carbon dating of rocks both from Earth and the Moon. However, billions of years is a very hard thing to grasp! Fortunately there is a creative way to get a grasp on this kind of time and that is with the "cosmic calendar" which Carl Sagan created and popularized. We set the Big Bang on January 1st and divided the events into one year, with now being the first day of the next new year. Before you read further, take a guess at which month humans enter into the calendar! The first stars and galaxies did not begin to form until the universe had cooled and expanded. Our Milky Way galaxy comes into existence on May 1st of our calendar. Our Solar System forms September 9th and the Earth on September 14th. The "infant" Earth was a hot, molten and toxic place, nothing like the paradise we know today. As Earth cooled, the first rocks solidified on October 2nd. The oldest known fossils, nothing more complex than bacteria and bluegreen algae, appear October 9th on our cosmic calendar. These early life forms reproduced by splitting cells. Sexes did not begin as a means of reproduction until about November first. The most basic plants which used photosynthesis to get energy, appear on November 12th. The first cells with nuclei, eukaryotes, appear on November 15th, and begin to flourish immediately. -

This series was assembled by the Evidence Division of the Office, Chief of Counsel for War Crimes (OCCWC), for the 12 U.S. military tribunals trying war criminals at Nuernberg during the 1946-49 period. Each register card describes an individual record item of the NOKW document series and its uses before the tribunals. Many of the individual records of this series were offered as evidence in the List and the von Leeb cases, 2 of the 12 cases tried before the U.S. mili- tary tribunals. Background Jurisdictions and Cases In Europe, the United States participated in war crimes trials under three jurisdictions: that of the International Military Tribunal (IMT), that of the U.S. military tribunals at Nuernberg, and that of the U.S. Army courts. General authority for the proceedings of all three jurisdictions derived from the Declaration of German Atrocities (Moscow Declaration), released November 1, 1943, which expressed Allied determination to arrest and bring to justice Axis war criminals. Brief descrip- tions of the war crimes trials records in the National Archives are in the Record Group Statement near the end of this introduction. -

Moon Minerals a visual guide A.G. Tindle and M. Anand Preliminaries Section 1 Preface Virtual microscope work at the Open University began in 1993 meteorites, Martian meteorites and most recently over 500 virtual and has culminated in the on-line collection of over 1000 microscopes of Apollo samples. samples available via the virtual microscope website (here). Early days were spent using LEGO robots to automate a rotating microscope stage thanks to the efforts of our colleague Peter Whalley (now deceased). This automation speeded up image capture and allowed us to take the thousands of photographs needed to make sizeable (Earth-based) virtual microscope collections. Virtual microscope methods are ideal for bringing rare and often unique samples to a wide audience so we were not surprised when 10 years ago we were approached by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council who asked us to prepare a virtual collection of the 12 Moon rocks they loaned out to schools and universities. This would turn out to be one of many collections built using extra-terrestrial material.
