Second Novel No End 175 Second Novel No End: An Open Letter to Ralph Ellison Horace Porter March 8, 20141 Skirvin Hotel Oklahoma City Dear Ralph, I’ve arrived in Oklahoma City for the first time. I’m recalling how you and I talked about Oklahoma City the first time I visited you and Fanny at your Harlem apartment. I was twenty-six and a graduate student at Yale. I wrote you a letter during the fall of 1976. I received your reply just before Christmas—a long eloquent letter—a special Christmas gift indeed. The letter, which I still treasure, has evidence of your characteristic style and wit: “once I shocked a white man whose shoes I was shining by revealing that I was familiar with Freud’s theory of dreams, but neither of us was prepared to communicate on that level, for it would have placed too great a strain on the arrangements of social hierarchy—and on the two of us!”2 You suggested that I come to see you. On Friday, February 17, 1977, I visited you and Fanny. I’ve already written about that special day.3 Suffice it to say on this occasion that it was an unforgettable and inspiring afternoon. Now thirty-seven years later, I’m standing here in Oklahoma City’s Skirvin Hotel, where you worked as a teenager. I’m reading this open letter to you at a conference and symposium dedicated to your work. His embrace of Black culture ultimately benefited Black art, inspiring Black artists to communicate their experiences using themes and musical elements that stemmed from Hughes’ style, fostering a greater understanding and respect of Black perspectives. Upon arrival, they combined traditional music with English lyricism, forming new dialects and music. “the poet considered jazz and the blues to be uniquely African-American art forms, both of which spurned the desire for assimilation and acceptance by white culture, and instead rejoiced in Black heritage and creativity” (Gross). Plantation hymns were the beginnings of the blues and jazz, carrying the same unbroken spirit as slave spirituals. -
Ralph Ellison
Ralph Ellison Ralph Waldo Ellison was born on March 1, 1914, to Oklahoma City pioneers Lewis Alfred Ellison and Ida Millsap Ellison. A businessman and former soldier with a passion for literature, Lewis Ellison named his son after the American author Ralph Waldo Emerson with the hope that the name would endow him with a similar love and talent for literature. Ellison's younger sibling was named Herbert. He was famed as a critic and for his internationally acclaimed novel, Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison began writing during the concluding years of the Harlem Renaissance but, despite a close association with author Langston Hughes and an affinity for jazz, considered his work separate from that of the New Negro movement rather than an extension of it. After his father's death when Ellison was three, his mother continued to encourage his intellectual development by later providing him with magazines discarded by employers in her work as a domestic. Among the magazines she presented him was Vanity Fair, the same publication in which Carl Van Vechten during the 1920s promoted the works of Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, and others associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Although Ida Ellison eventually remarried twice, Ralph Ellison's childhood was essentially one of poverty that forced his mother to constantly relocate while generally raising her sons alone. Attending Oklahoma City's Frederick Douglass School at the elementary and high school levels, Ellison became a student of music. He learned to play the trumpet for his high school band as well as with local jazz bands. -

Introduction he Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens recently acquired Ta collection of letters and literary manuscripts of the famed Harlem Renaissance author Langston Hughes. Many of the Hughes letters in the collection were written to his friend Loren Miller, an African American attorney. The collection also includes essays, a one-act play, and a previously unpublished poem. Acclaimed as the most gifted poet of the Harlem Renaissance and revered as one of America’s greatest twen- tieth-century poets, Hughes used his talents as a writer to probe the conscience of America; through literature he revealed the realities of being a black man in America in the first half of the twentieth century. II. Objectives ♦ To explain how Langston Hughes used poetry to comment on American political and social issues. ♦ To appraise the power of literature in promoting social change. III. He co-edited the most recent of his many publications, “The Collected Letters of Langton Hughes,” with Dr. David Roessel, professor of Greek Language and Literature at Stockton and Christa Fratantoro, a Stockton Literature graduate. Dr. Rampersad, who has written about Herman Melville, W.E.B.
