With the distinction of being perhaps, the only seafood resource in India's trade economy, which remains relatively low down the ladder in terms of quantity of production but brings in maximum foreign exchange, lobsters have been the subject of study for more than two decades now.

Vessel types: Pair trawlers In the wet-fish trawler the fish is kept in the hold in the fresh/"wet" condition. Characteristics Midwater pair trawling Species Environment Midwater pair trawling can be effective in different situations: when fish are aggregated into large dense shoals and when (at another season or time of the day or according to physiological status) fishes are regularly distributed within a given water layer. In addition to the difference it makes whether the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department fish are aggregated in a small volume or spread within a large one, fish may swim (and avoid the net) at different speeds according to its own physiological status and/or other external conditions. As a result, in addition to the fish which is targeted, other different conditions will affect the design and size of the midwater trawl, as well as the towing speed. Fishing Gear A midwater pair trawl has roughly similar design as other midwater trawls. Midwater pair trawls might, however, be designed to have a more rectangular opening than ordinary midwater otter trawls. Midwater pair trawls might be rigged with two towing warps from each vessel or alternatively with one towing warp from each vessel and a bridle arrangement.

Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract. Light in stationary lift nets (SLN) is important to the extent that it can determine the composition of species, size and number of fish caught. Different types of light are often used in aggregating certain types of fish. This study aims to find the best type of light for SLN and to determine the characteristics of the catch between light emitting diode (LED) and kerosene lights. The results showed that there were no significant differences in species composition of fish caught in both LED and kerosene lights. These types of lights do not affect the composition of fish species, but have a significant effect on the amount of catch. The most caught fish (target species) were short mackerel (Rastrelliger brachysoma) and yellowstripe scad (Selaroides leptolepis). The SLN operated with kerosene lights caught short mackerel (R. brachysoma) and yellowstripe scad (S. leptolepis) of bigger size compared to SLN with LED lights. The average length and weight of short mackerel caught with kerosene lights were 146.3 mm and 37.17 grams, respectively. The average length and weight of yellowstripe scad (S. leptolepis) caught with kerosene lights were 117.04 mm and 21.5 grams, respectively. However, only a small portion of catch, 4.5%, had already reached its mature size (Lm), while the rest of the catch (95.5%) had not reached its mature size.

For our knowledge of the phyllosoma larvae of Ibacus ciliatus, we have the reports of many investigators, such as DE HAAN (1833-1850), RIGHTERS (1873), BALSS (1914), STEPHENSEN (1923), GURNEY (1936), TOKIOKA (1954), etc., but if these re­ ports are consulted, it may clearly be shown that the phyllosomas which were treated and described in these reports are all of the later developmental stages, and no case in the earlier stages of the phyllosoma is available. This may be mainly due to that the phyllosomas in these reports are those largely obtained in the field by chance or during the courses of large-scaled oceanographical investigations. This may also be met with in the case if we take the phyllosomas of other species into account. For instance, if one intends to make comparison of the newly hatched phyllosomas of certain species, one will be sure to find a number of species of which the newly hatched phyllosoma is undescribed.

Lamarca2 1BFAR-National Marine Fisheries Development Center, Sangley Point, Cavite City, Philippines 2BFAR-Fishing Technology Division, 860 Arcadia Bldg., Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines ABSTRACT Round scad exploration by purse seine in the waters of western Philippines was conducted from April 22 to May 7, 1998 for a period of five (5) fishing days with a total catch of 7.3 tons and an average of 1.5 tons per setting. Dominant species caught were Decapterus spp. having 70.09% of the total catch, followed by Selar spp. at 12.66% and Rastrelliger spp. 10.70%. Among the Decapterus spp. caught, D. macrosoma attained the highest total catch composition by species having 68.81% followed by D. kurroides and D.russelli with 0.31% and 1.14% respectively. The round scad fishery stock was composed mainly of juvenile fish (less than 13 cm) and Age group II (13 cm to 14 cm). Few large round scad at Age group IV and V (20 cm to 28 cm) stayed at the fishery.

Read Full License Page 1/18 Abstract Background Growth rate is considered one of the most important factors in the farming of Haliotis midae and somatic growth rates decline after abalone reach sexual maturity. Articial diets are suspected to accelerate maturation, in particular when soya meal is used as a protein source, because of this plant’s high concentration of phytoestrogens. Results We fed two articial diets and a natural diet, kelp. The rst articial diet had shmeal as its main source of protein while the other, Abfeed® S34, replaced some of the sh proteins with soya meal. The effect of diet on the gonad development of 27-month-old farmed Haliotis midae, raised at two stocking densities, was analysed. For each gonad sample the development phase was determined based on both histological criteria and the gonad bulk index (GBIn). The hypothesized link between dietary protein source and gonad development could not be established by either morphological criteria or GBIn.
