This paper is a report on the fishing methods and gears used in these islands, with special focus on the traditional and primitive ones. The term "fishing" is commonly used to mean the capture of many aquatic animals — fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, coelenterates, echinoderms, sponges, and even birds and mammals. Moreover, the harvesting of algae underwater or from the intertidal zone is often an important job for the fishermen. Fishing method is the manner by which the aquatic organisms are captured or collected; fishing gear is the implement developed for the purpose. Oftentimes, the gear alone is not sufficient and auxiliary instruments have to be used to realize a method. A fishing method can be applied by means of various gears, just as a fishing gear can sometimes be used in the appli cation of several methods. Commonly, only commercial fishing is covered in fisheries reports. Although traditional and primitive fishing is done on a small scale, it is still very important from the viewpoint of supply of animal protein. -

Purse seines with 2.5 cm mesh size are used to surround the fish, using fishing boats ranging from 18 to 26 m in overall length. Fishing grounds are located in the central Gulf of Thailand at a depth of 25–60 m. Catch per unit effort (CPUE), species composition and size of economically important species were analyzed by collecting data from fishing boats using FADs at nine main fishing ports along the Gulf of Thailand between January and December 2007. The results show that the average CPUE was 3351 kg day−1,which was composed of 88% pelagic fishes, 5% demersal fishes, 4% trash fishes and 2% squids and cuttlefishes. The major pelagic species were Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), Indian scad (Decapterus russelli) and bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus), which made up 25%, 24% and 8% of the total catch, respectively, while neritic tunas (kawakawa; Euthynnus affinis, frigate tuna; Auxis thazard thazard and longtail tuna; Thunnus tonggol) made up 8% of the total catch. -

A study of the fish reproductive biology, which is one aspect of fisheries biology, is crucial to support the implementation of sustainable Oci Fish resource management policies. This study aims to determine the average length at first maturity, gonad maturity stages, and fecundity of the fish in Tomini Bay. Sampling was carried out using a stratified random sampling method from the catches of the fishermen landed in Fish Landing Base Kampung Tenda, Gorontalo City. The time interval sampling was conducted per month during April, May, and June 2020. Fish and egg samples preserved using ice cubes and a 10% formaldehyde solution correspondingly. The results of the study showed that the Oci Fish in Tomini Bay had a length range of the first maturity between 166 and 174 mm with a gonad maturity index ranging from 1.773 to 2.760%. The average fish fecundity was 16623 ± 4850 eggs. This research aimed to examine the population dynamic parameters of Selaroides leptolepis including age group, growth, mortality, exploitation and yield per recruit. The research was conducted in June-August 2015 in the Waters of Ternate Island and based in Sasa Village, Ternate Selatan Sub- district. The samples were measured in the Fishery Products Processing Laboratory, Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku. 1,043 individuals of Selaroides leptolepis which measured 8.2-21.7 cm in length were taken as samples. The research results showed that the population dynamic of S. leptolepis in the waters of Ternate Island consistsed of 11.77 cm, 15.97 cm, and 19.39 cm age groups measuring 22.78 cm in asymptotic length (L), 0.28 cm in growth rate coefficient (K) and -0.64 in theoretical lifespan. S. leptolepis has total mortality rate (Z) of 1.43 per year, natural mortality rate (M) of 0.64 per year, fishing mortality rate (F) of 0.79 per year, and exploitation rate (E) of 0.55 and yield per recruit (Y/R) of 0.02 g per recruitment. -

The site is occupied by locally common species, such as clown fish Amphiprion clarkii (Fig. 2), schools of Chinese demoiselle Neopomacentrus bankieri, bubblefin wrasse Halichoeres nigrescens and various cardinalfishes from the genus Apogon. We also encountered some rarer fishes like Racoon butterflyfish Chaetodon lunula, Big Fish Count 2005 Eclipse puffer Takifugu ocellatus: Min and Valerie’s record of a Pearlscale butterflyfish, Chaetodon xanthurus, was the first record of this species within Hong Kong waters. by Ng Wai Chuen and Priscilla Leung The Big Fish Count 2005, organized by WWF Hong Kong, was held on a sunny, calm Sunday on 2 October. This was the second year of the annual fund-raising event which aims to arouse public awareness about marine life and conservation. The data collected could also contribute to database establishment and better understanding of local fish communities and associated environment. This year, the participating teams increased from 4 to 10 compared to last year. The SWIMS formed a six-diver-team which included Anna Situ, who previously participated in the Big Fish Count 2004, Valerie Ho, Wallace Choi, Liu Min, Priscilla Leung and Ng Wai Chuen; the team was also supported by Wai Tak Cheung, Jasmine Ng and Karen Lui. With the full support of Dr Gray Williams, the Director of the SWIMS, and organization by Dr Kenneth Leung, our team got everything set and ready to dive (Fig. 1). Fig.
