GERMPLASM AND HYBRID POPULATIONS Benjamin Leo Gutierrez, Ph.D. Cornell University 2017 Dihydrochalcones are abundant in Malus Mill. species, including the cultivated apple (M. ×domestica Borkh.). Phloridzin, the primary dihydrochalcone in Malus species, has beneficial nutritional qualities, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic properties. As such, phloridzin could be a target for improvement of nutritional quality in new apple cultivars. In addition to phloridzin, a few rare Malus species produce trilobatin or sieboldin in place of phloridzin and hybridization can lead to combinations of phloridzin, trilobatin, or sieboldin in interspecific apple progenies. Trilobatin and sieboldin also have unique chemical properties that make them desirable targets for apple breeding, including high antioxidant activity, anti- inflammatory, anti-diabetic properties, and a high sweetness intensity. We studied the variation of phloridzin, sieboldin, and trilobatin content in leaves of 377 accessions from the USDA National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) Malus collection in Geneva, NY over three seasons and identified valuable genetic resources for breeding and researching dihydrochalcones. From these resources, five apple hybrid populations were developed to determine the genetic basis of dihydrochalcone variation. Phloridzin, sieboldin, and trilobatin appear to follow segregation patterns for three independent genes and significant trait-marker associations were identified using genetic data from genotyping-by-sequencing. Dihydrochalcones are at much lower quantities in mature apple fruit compared with vegetative tissues. -

Apple trees that have fruit on spurs or semi-spurs are more dwarfing. They also require special pruning techniques. Tip and Partial-tip Apple Varieties – Over 350 varieties listed. Fruit are borne on the tip of the branches, and are weeping and require little to no pruning. ________________________________________________________________________ Apple Fruiting 1 12/8/06 SPUR-TYPE FRUITING APPLES FOR THE HOME ORCHARD For home orchardists there are several advantages in growing spur–type trees. As the name indicates, the fruit is borne on spurs. Spurs are slow growing leafy shoots and have a mixed terminal bud. A mixed terminal bud will produce shoot and flowers. In apples, spurs develop on two–year old shoots from axillary buds located at the base of each leaf. Axillary buds on a spur can give rise to shoots or new spurs. A branched spur system forms after several years when new spur form on old spurs. Spur–type strains are more dwarfing than the standard stain. When spur and standard strains were compared in Washington rootstock trials, the spurs were 25% smaller than standard stains. Spur–type apples have a growing and fruiting characteristic in which lateral (axillary) buds on two year old wood gives rise to a higher portion of spurs and fewer lateral shoots than occur with standard growth habits. This gives the tree a more open canopy and compact growth habit than standard trees. Research indicates that they have approximately half the canopy volume of standard strains. -

This catalog contains a very diverse list of accessions including wild species, interspecific hybrids, heirloom cultivars, other rare cultivars and commonly available commercial cultivars. We are now suggesting that unless a request for scions (graft wood) of common commercially-available cultivars is for research purposes, we ask that you obtain that material from a commercial source. If you are not sure, there are websites that list availability such as: http://www.goodfruit.com/buyers. A general search for cultivar sources on Google can also be done. There is one excellent source that we use here when the question of commercial availability comes to us. This is an excellent book Fruit, Berry and Nut Inventory, Fourth edition: An Inventory of Nursery Catalogs Listing All Fruit, Berry and Nut Varieties by Kent Whealy. It lists many nurseries that carry not only common commercial material but also heirloom and rare cultivars published by http://www.seedsavers.org/. If accessions are not available through commercial sources, we can provide scions/cuttings. When selecting your order, the following conditions apply: 1. Orders for dormant scions (limit 25) must be received by January 10th in order to ship by March 20. 2. Orders for summer bud wood (limit 25) must be received by July 15th in order to ship by August 20. 3. Orders for pollen, seed, fruit and other plant tissues may also be requested. -

Archive of Cider Pomology Archive No: 7/2/4 Archived 21 August 2012 Sustainable Cider Apple Production Eleni Vysini, Jim Dunwell , Bob Froud-Williams, Paul Hadley, Paul Hatcher, Matthew Ordidge, Michael Shaw and Nick Battey School of Biological Sciences, The Harborne Building University of Reading Whiteknights, Reading, RG6 6AS, UK SEPTEMBER 2011 Acknowledgements We would like to thank Richard Heathcote, Liz Copas and Chris Turnbull for their help and advice. i MANAGEMENT SUMMARY The cider apple orchard of the future needs to be sustainable, resilient to environmental and ecological challenges, with reduced pesticide inputs; these characteristics need to be achieved with minimal negative impact on yield and fruit quality. Areas that offer opportunities for sustainable orcharding include: 1) use of cover crops to provide an environment conducive to beneficial insects; 2) management of pests and diseases using alternatives to chemical control approaches [e.g. use of ground cover plants, resistant varieties, sanitation measures (leaf litter management), use of particle films, plant extracts, viruses, bacteria, reservoirs of natural enemies, and IT based advisory systems such as ADEM TM and SOPRA]; 3) minimization and effective management of waste. Major waste products of an orchard are prunings and trash, and apple pomace. Pruning waste has been found to be rich in polyphenols; a potential use for the extracted polyphenolics has been proposed to be in the food industry, as natural antioxidants. Another alternative use of pruning waste is as a renewable source for energy production or as a soil amendment, a biochar. There is increasing evidence that global climate change is taking place. -
