Today we will need to be at our best to get the points against our visitors and as it is is a home game it is vital we do not become complacent as we try to continue on our recent run of good form. There are no easy games in this division and we will be giving Eccles all the respect they deserve in today's encounter. Come on the ‘Corn’, Scott Who’s Here To Take on The Blue and Gold’s Today ECCLES started out as G.E.C in the NWCL in 1977 and there was no sign in those days that the club would become the most successful in Manchester& District league history. We finished bottom of division 3 that first season with only three wins from 26 games and then again the next season with two wins from 24 games. The following year we had a mid table finish in division 4 but because interest in the club was great we formed an ‘A’ team who would play in division 4 and the first team was promoted back to division 3. At this time Rod & Alfrieda Kindon, together with a committee which included ex-Salford player Stewart Williams and John Smethurst, discovered a derelict open air school in Eccles and after much hard work from many volunteers this was to become the club house that we still use today. This also brought around a change of name to Eccles ARLFC and a change of fortunes as well. After finishing third in division 3 in 1980-81 we went through the following season undefeated to claim our first league title. In those early days winger Ste- ve Evans became the first Eccles player to sign professional when he joined Swinton RLFC. More than 40 Eccles players have gone on to play for professional teams since then, including Great Britain & England international Adrian Morley Eccles were accepted for a place in the Conference division 2 for the 1994-95 season, winning our first ever match away at Barrow Island, and we were to stay in division 2 until gaining promotion in 1998-99. We stayed in the Conference league division 1 for six seasons before finally reaching the pinnacle of amateur rugby league, the premier division for the 2005-06 season. Unfortunately, this proved a step too far too soon and we suffered relegation. We are a relatively young side going through a transitional period and we be- lieve that there is a bright future ahead for the club. The Blue and Gold’s in Action What the papers say..... • SECOND to NONE NCL Round Up
#COYS SECOND TO NONE NCL Round up The Saints last home fixture was against Drighlington, who were out to avenge an earlier season defeat by the Saints. With conditions that resembled a monsoon, it made the handling and attacking for both teams difficult. A try by Simon Topping, and goals by Matt Whitehead looked to have secured the points for the Saints, put a last minute penalty for the visitors ended the game in the draw. The week later, the Saints travelled to Hensingham with a squad that had to draft in Under 18s, Owen Smith and Josh Yarwood into the ranks due to injuries, and player availability. The hosts got off to a great start running in two tries in 15 minutes, before the Saints hit back with a try from Callum Cashin. Moments later, the Saints lost centre Cameron Ladd with a broken hand, and then loose forward Rob Charles, both players couldn’t return to the field. This put pressure on the bench, and with sweltering conditions it made life difficult. The home side led at half time 26 to 4,and it didn’t look Saints could claw themselves back into the game. However, the never say die attitude of the squad saw the visitors score three tries through captain Matt Whitehead, who also converted all three tries, pulled the Saints back into contention. However, as the home team tired, the Saints ran out of time to to claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. claim the victory, going down 34 to 22.
