REPUBLIQUE DE LIBERIA Dear Mr Kiig, I beg to inform you that about on the 8th instant,two boys of a FrenchmanMr PUZZIN,merchant in the Ivory Coasthave been arrested the Liberian Lieutnant GIBSON, of L.F.F.,at Tibo Iv KCoast) and taken away at VEDBO and innc d into the Camp of L.F.F.at NIAAKA. The Lt Gibson had a woman,domestic in his family,and who had escaped at Tiboto (Ivory Coast) where she has a sister who is married to a clerk of Mr PUZIN,at Tiboto. The Lt Gibson has oeen to Ticoto to fetch her but she refused to folio; him.Then Mr Gioson. has arrested the tro boys as above mentioned saying that he was tav<ing them as hostages an they would be free only when the woman would come back into Liberian territory. Mr PUZZIN saw the Captain HA;iKINS w with the Agent of the Cavalla River as inteep reter,and finally the bo:s have been released The ) The THon.Senator Weslay was witness. Captain Hawkins once sent for Lifeut. Gibson in whose presence the statement of r. Puisant was rehearsed. Lient. Gibson farther stated that he had in i own quarters two boys said to have comefrom Tiroto. le said he tet these boys on the Liberian territog, W ha boys tieut. Gibson said told him that they came e yard of Mr. Puisant and that they were sent over t1e river to cross some- body by thp;store keeper of Mr. Puisant, and that he kept these two boys in his parlor because the wife of this store keeper of Mr. Pui- sant was detaining from the said Lieut. Gibson a mai4g servant. Captain Hawkins then ordered the said boys to be brought, which or- dervLieut. Gibson readily obeyed. After which,,Captain Hawkins Ma delivered them to* Mr. Puisant expressing his regret of the affair and the hope that after hearing the statement of Lieut. Gibson, - that Mr. luisant was satisfied. Mr.. About 10:30 er 11:00 p.m., Mr/ Puisant with Mr/ George Dien, came up to ,Captain Hawkins quarters. Mr! When Capt,/ Hakins asked me I admitted that in the morning of that day I had been over to the Trench side, but I did not bring aa any boys, nor since/ The two boys that I had in my parlor were seen by me en the Liberian territory, and had come to cross someone.
