A book worth readingBy ObaidI would recommend this book for all who is interested in south Asian cultural and literary history or have niche for intellectual historicity of Islam. The book is as kaleidoscopic as Islam itself.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Faith of a lay Muslim by Dr Daud RahbarBy Mehmud AhmedA scholar friend, Col Anwar Ahmed has read the book and written the following review on it:"THE FAITH OF A LAY MUSLIM" is not a conventional Biography. Professor MuhammadIqbal, whose account of life--very personal, family details, hisintellectual pursuits, literary encounters and immersion-research andteaching, his interactions and relationships (intimate and formal) withscholars of eminence of his milieu have been skillfully weaved in a grand andunique colourful tapestry of vast dimensions. The book heralds a new genre inthe art of Biographical writing and that too by no less a scholar of great Eminence, his son "DR DAUD RAHBAR"--Professor Emeritus, BOSTON University. The book is highly readable and style captivatingfor a scholarly "dense" research. The indepth narrative with copious noteshas a large canvas in its sweep of lively anecdotal details of earlylife, a unique impact of Aligarh on his persona for the rest of his life asan Aligarian in spite of a successful sojourn in Cambridge.( Aligarhattire in Oriental College group pictures are indicative of the stamp).Professor Iqbal's academic career and persona iswoven around the literary reform movements,Genesis of Sufism and Persianresponse-- resist and protest rigid SUNNI ORTHODOXY in a covert intellectualway. The "book" takes shape of a critical history of the covertintellectual responses and consequent emergence of classical age of greatPersian Sufi poets merging with the study of Existential Islam. Roots ofwhich are traceable to the evolution of Ghazal format in poetry. Genere ofGhazal and Rubiyat was taken to great heights in Persian,Turkish andUrdu-Persian poetry laying the ground rules. Liberties were taken inwishing for things prohibited and even religious edicts or dogmas weremade an object of fun and verses bordering on blasphemy. This was all tomake life relaxed ,easy and tolerable.Hardly any one of the tall figures has escapedthe sharp eye of Dr Rahbar. One gets acquainted with large corpus ofluminaries and their thought process. Western scholars will have a in-depthknowledge of the craft of Ghazal. Dr Rahhbar has virtually provided aprimer for the fomat of Ghazal .Genuine tributes have been offered toProfessor Massignon for his devotion to Hallaj- an unfortunate and misunderstood mysticmartyr of Sufi expression. Dr Rahbar terms his scholarship(briefly mentioned)as awesome Haloed Orientalists their roles, contributionsand persona is intricately woven in the "Tapestry" with reverence butwith a critical eye,-their idiosyncrasies, prejudices and warts are allthere.Music--that almost neglected art form amongstMuslims, despite their contribution to classical music in India andintroduction of new instruments not withstanding) gets an honourableacademic treatment with explanations rarely seen.{ Dr Daud Rahbar is adevotee of classical music and has written about it and given performances inDelhi and Boston}An unconventional persona unburdened by normaltraits of an Oriental scholar of Professor Iqbal emerges (a hafiz -having committed to memory the entire Qura'n) hosted regularmusical evenings. Usual guests included another Hafiz-i-Qura'nHafiz Mahmood Shirani, "Maulvi" Mohammad Shafi -an ascetic and at times a stern person, famous poet Hafeez Jallandhari of Shah Nama -i-Islam and author of Pakistan's nationalanthem. Some how this censorial does not fit comfortably with the prevailingconditions of Pakistan. Dr Iqbal's devotion also points to another traitreferred by Dr Rahbar as a "Person Ghazalified"A very major, but important segment is thatof "notes"-which are precise and essential to the main text ofnarrative. They fill in some unheard of facts imperative to form acoherent picture.. These notes are also a tribute to the awesomescholarship of Dr Daud Rahbar and reflective of a perceptive and fortunatelife in the company of some of the great scholars of a bygone era. DrRahbar has filled "the great void which lasted five decades in scholarshipby this great dissertation of his. (Ends) This is a book about Daud Rahbar's father who was a professor of Islamic studies, who gave a comprehensive approach to this field of study.
