  • Thirteen Feature Films by Kon Ichikawa to Be Presented
'he Museum of Modem Art %'^ Vest 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-8900 Cable: Modernart Wo. 20 FOR IM^'TEDIATE RELEASE Friday, February 10, 1967 Thirteen feature films by the Japanese director Kon Ichikawa will be presented by the Department of Film of The Museum of Modem Art from February 12 through February 27• The films range from Ichikawa's satirical comedies of the early *50*s to the more recent tragedies attempting to show the "pain of our age»" All of the films are in Japanese with English subtitles. Describing his work, Ichikawa says, "I try to visualize everything...I'm the kind of person who has to see something — even in my own imagination «•- before I understand it. I started as a painter and I think like one. That is wl:^ the camera is so important to me« I plan all the set-ups and I always check the framing, and I usually try to work with (a cameraman) I know.•••I design the sets too, usually... and I'd probably do the music too if I could." Film critic Donald Richie describes the resulting "Ichikawa look": "The angular pattern is usually bold, the balance is almost always asymmetrical, the framing is precise, and yet the composition rarely calls attention to itself*" At 18 after graduation from an Osaka commercial school Ichikawa began studying animation and in 19h6 completed a puppet-film based on a famous Kabuki dance. (The Occupation authorities, concerned with discovering "feudal remnants," seized the neg ative and it has never been found.) After that, Ichikawa joined Toho Production Company and began making satirical comedies until 1955 when he switched to more serious subject matter with The Burmese Harp* He says, "I had become aware that men are unhappy.

  • Japanische Meisterregisseure
• As Reconstruções Modernas De Um Mito
ABSTRACT In this work, we intend to make a comparative analysis between the Japanese fairytale Yukionna (“The Woman of the Snow”), by Lafcadio Hearn and two modern film adaptations, Masaki Kobayashi’s Kaidan (1964), and Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990). With that, we would like to investigate how each director envisions the classical tale, and how these interpretations are portrayed on their movies. As theoretical reference we used the instruments of analysis proposed by João Batista de Brito (2006). As a preliminary observation, we can conclude that the 1964 movie has more similarities with Hearn’s tale, while the 1990 movie shows a somewhat more free interpretation of the story.

  • AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON (Sanma No Aji) Directed by Yasujiro Ozu Japan, 1962, 112 Mins, Cert PG
AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON (Sanma no aji) Directed by Yasujiro Ozu Japan, 1962, 112 mins, Cert PG With Chishu Ryu, Shima Iwashita, Keiji Sada, Mariko Okada New 2K restoration Opening on 16 May 2014 at BFI Southbank and selected cinemas nationwide 17/3/14 – Now ravishingly restored by Shochiku Studios, Japan’s National Film Centre and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, An Autumn Afternoon is the final work of Japanese master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu (1903 – 1963). One of the greatest last films in all of cinema history, it is released by the BFI in cinemas nationwide on 16 May. While the film’s original Japanese title (which translates as ‘The Taste of Mackerel’) is less obviously elegiac than its English one, Ozu’s masterpiece is truly autumnal, charting the inevitable eclipse of older generations by irreverent youth. Revisiting the storyline of his earlier Late Spring (1949), Ozu collaborates once more with his regular screenwriter Kogo Noda and casts the familiar face of Chishu Ryu in the role of Hirayama, an elderly widower worried about the unmarried daughter who keeps house for him. Counselled on all sides to marry her off before it is too late, Hirayama plays matchmaker and reluctantly prepares to bid his old life farewell. The themes throughout are familiar from much of the director’s greatest work: everyday life with all its ups and downs – at home, at work, in local bars, with family, with old friends. These are ordinary people whose stories may not have big melodramatic moments, but whose concerns – loneliness, ageing parents, family responsibility – resonate deeply with us all.
