Inicios Y Fragmentación Del Feminismo En Occidente Start Off and Fragmentation of Feminism in the West
We can say, that most of the occidental History has been marked with the matter of the equality of women. The femenine absence in the public sphere made a lot of women and men voices stand up in pro of the acceptance of their rights. In this articles there are explained very briefly the different movements that arose in defense of equality. -

Carlos Vaz Ferreira, William James, and the “Cash-Value” of Feminism by Amy Oliver
Varieties of Pragmatism: Carlos Vaz Ferreira, William James, and the “Cash-Value” of Feminism by Amy Oliver Varieties of Pragmatism: Carlos Vaz Ferreira, William James, and the “Cash- Value” of Feminism by Amy Oliver English Abstract The major Uruguayan social philosopher Carlos Vaz Ferreira (1871–1958), best known for his works Living Logic (1920) and Fermentary (1938), also produced feminist philosophy in Batllist Uruguay that is still considered theoretically rich today. Vaz Ferreira was a pioneer in feminist theory; his impact and feminist projects together demonstrate a telling lesson about feminism in Latin America. This paper shows that although Vaz Ferreira was a critic of Pragmatism, especially that of William James, he employed its methods in On Feminism (1933) to formulate his positions on women’s issues in Latin America. Vaz Ferreira’s writings and feminist political stance had significant impact on women’s rights throughout Latin America. -
Feminism and Feminist Movements in Latin America
UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Department of History Semester I, 1992-1993 History 982 Florencia E. Mallon 5125 Humanities 263-1822 Feminism and Feminist Movements in Latin America Course Description Since the 1970s, new and innovative forms of feminism have begun to take shape in Latin America. These feminisms have been influenced by events and tendencies as diverse as the debates over the Cuban Family Code (mid-1970s); the experience of Latin American women in exile in Mexico, the United States, and Europe (1970s and '80s); the international feminist movement; the Nicaraguan revolution and guerrilla movements in Central America; and the rise of strong women's movements in response to scarcity and repression throughout Latin America. Given widespread poverty and the intensity of class and race oppression in Latin America, Latin American feminists have , from the very start, been forced to confront head on the many conditions and factors that divide them from their sisters. Whether or not Latin American feminists have beem successful in meeting the many challenges they face continues to be the subject of fierce debate. The same can be said of their relationship to the Cuban and Nicaraguan rev olutions, to the world feminist movement, and to leftist movements in their own countries. In their own right, and as vital examples of "Third World" feminisms, the theory and practice of Latin American feminists raises important questions for feminists throughout the world . The purpose of this seminar is to study, and engage in, some of these debates . We will begin by examining the history of feminism and feminist movements in Latin America, from the "first wave" of feminist mobilization in the 1900-1940 period, to the emergency of "revolutionary" feminisms in Cuba and Central America in the 1970s and 1980s. -
Gendering Spanish Democracy
Gendering Spanish Democracy The political transformation of Spain into one of the world's leading democracies is well established, yet little is known about the differences between men and women's behaviour, experience and achievements during that process. How much did the women's movement contribute to this transformation? How far have policy advocates successfully integrated gender equality into key spheres of public life? Have power relations between women and men been re-balanced? Gendering Spanish Demo- cracy adopts an innovative approach, critically reviewing key institutional processes, policies and systems to reveal the way they function to promote or obstruct gender equity. Both the transition to democracy, equality law reform, and the social welfare reregime gime are put to the test. The ground breaking efforts of policy-makers to combat the violence, sexual harass ment and low political participation that are intrinsic to women's experience are scrutinised, and the constraints on equality in the field of employment and the family critically investigated. The authors conclude that the recent re-balancing of the gender order in Spain is unexpected and contradictory, being ultimately more effective in political rather than socio-economic arenas. Gendering Spanish Democracy breaks new ground in applying a sys tematic gender perspective to the analysis of established democracies, and is the first book in English to reveal the unique features of contemporary Spain's evolving gender order. Salgado) In this dissertation I discuss the ways in which socially conscious playwrights in early -twentieth century Argentina used and adapted theatre genres to advance women’s rights and project the feminist imagination. I also anal yze how theatre critics and spectators reacted to these early feminist spectacles. In Chapter 1, I provide an overview of the repression of women that was dictated by the Argentine Civil Code and the efforts of feminist activists to make reforms. I also de scribe how various playwrights (Salvadora Medina Onrubia, José González Castillo, César Iglesias Paz, Alfonsina Storni, and Malena Sándor) used the genre of thesis drama to support social and legislative progress from 1914 to 1937. I explain , in Chapter 2, how marginalized female playwrights (Lola Pita Martínez, Alcira Olivé, Carolina Alió, Salvadora Medina Onrubia and Alfonsina Storni) cultivated the unique strategy of “feminist melodrama,” which allowed them to endorse feminism from within an accepted “fe minine” genre. -
Gender, Agency and Change
Gender, Agency and Change People’s engagement with change is mediated by social and cultural factors that shape their experience and inform their identities. In this edited volume gender provides the main focus for exploring the processes through which the construction and performance of identity and agency take place. The chapters show that agency is complex, and is often expressed in contradictory ways, for example in strategies of accommodation and adaptation that can nevertheless generate new institutional arrangements. Alternatively, there may be an outright rejection of these processes while incorporating specific elements associated with them. The cases examined in this volume explore the ways in which different subjects engage in the reformulation of spaces, roles and identities, redefining the boundaries between, and the content of, the ‘public’ and the ‘private’. The examples also provide an account of how gendered discourses are deployed to convey new meanings, a new sense of place and time, confirming or challenging ideas of ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’. This collection will be of particular interest to students of anthropology and gender studies. European Association of Social Anthropologists Series facilitator: Jon P.Mitchell University of Sussex The European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) was inaugurated in January 1989, in response to a widely felt need for a professional association which would represent social anthropologists in Europe and foster cooperation and interchange in teaching and research. As Europe transforms itself in the 1990s, the EASA is dedicated to the renewal of the distinctive European tradition in social anthropology. -
