The Algerian War, European Integration and the Decolonization of French Socialism

Abstract: This article takes up Todd Shepard’s call to “write together the history of the Algerian War and European integration” by examining the French Socialist Party. Socialist internationalism, built around an analysis of European history, abhorred nationalism and exalted supranational organization. Its principles were durable and firm. Socialist visions for French colonies, on the other hand, were fluid. The asymmetry of the party’s European and colonial visions encouraged socialist leaders to apply their European doctrine to France’s colonies during the Algerian War. The war split socialists who favored the European communities into multiple parties, in which they cooperated with allies who did not support European integration. French socialist internationalism became a casualty of the Algerian War. In the decolonization of the French Socialist Party, support for European integration declined and internationalism largely vanished as a guiding principle of French socialism. Cet article adresse l’appel de Todd Shepard à «écrire à la fois l’histoire de la guerre d’Algérie et l’histoire de l'intégration européenne» en examinant le Parti socialiste. L’internationalisme socialiste, basé sur une analyse de l’histoire européenne, dénonça le nationalisme et exalta le supranationalisme. -

La ausencia femenina en el ámbito público hizo alzar las voces de muchas mujeres y hombres en pro del reconocimiento de sus derechos. Aunque mucho se luchó por conseguirlos, estos tardaron en ser reconocidos y respetados. En este artículo se exponen brevemente los distintos movimientos que nacieron en defensa de la igualdad. Tras estos movimientos, han surgido otras visiones y otras maneras de enfocar el tema del feminismo, plan- teando salvar la igualdad y la diferencia. En esta perspectiva, se encuentra el neofeminismo, ya que intenta encuadrar a la mujer en un nuevo esquema familiar y social, sin desprestigiar ni enfrentar estos dos ámbitos PALABRAS CLAVE: Femisnismo, Mujer, Igualdad,Primacia y Neofeminismo We can say, that most of the occidental History has been marked with the matter of the equality of women. The femenine absence in the public sphere made a lot of women and men voices stand up in pro of the acceptance of their rights. The Jim Kemmy Papers P5 University of Limerick Library and Information Services University of Limerick Special Collections The Jim Kemmy Papers Reference Code: IE 2135 P5 Title: The Jim Kemmy Papers Dates of Creation: 1863-1998 (predominantly 1962-1997) Level of Description: Fonds Extent and Medium: 73 boxes (857 folders) CONTEXT Name of Creator: Kemmy, Seamus (Jim) (1936-1997) Biographical History: Seamus Kemmy, better known as Jim Kemmy, was born in Limerick on 14 September, 1936, as the eldest of five children to Elizabeth Pilkington and stonemason Michael Kemmy. He was educated at the Christian Brothers’ primary school in Sexton Street and in 1952 followed his father into the Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stonelayers’ Trade Union to commence his five-year apprenticeship. When his father died of tuberculosis in 1955, the responsibility of providing for the family fell onto Kemmy’s shoulders. Having qualified as a stonemason in 1957, he emigrated to England in the hope of a better income. The different social conditions and the freedom of thought and expression he encountered there challenged and changed his traditional Catholic values and opened his eyes to the issues of social injustice and inequality, which he was to stand up against for the rest of his life. In 1960, encouraged by the building boom, Kemmy returned to Ireland and found work on construction sites at Shannon. He also became involved in the Brick and Stonelayers’ Trade Union, and was elected Branch Secretary in 1962. A year later, he joined the Labour Party. Kemmy harboured no electoral ambitions during his early years in politics. -

We seek to challenge and redistribute all inequalities of power and wealth in society through the empowerment of ordinary people. We strive for social and economic justice, where everyone has a guaranteed standard of security and well-being, and fair opportunity to develop their personal and social selves and to participate in the economic, social and cultural life of the nation in conditions of freedom, solidarity, justice, economic security and equality. OUR DETERMINATION is to change Irish society through the broadest possible engagement with and empowerment of all progressive social forces – Irish, European and international – and through contesting elections and pursuing policies in government that further progressive ends. OUR PARTY is a democratic socialist party and, through its membership of the Party of European Socialists and the Progressive Alliance, is part of the international socialist movement working for equality and to empower of citizens, consumers and workers in a world increasingly dominated by big business, greed and selfishness. IT WAS FOUNDED from the trade union movement by James Connolly, Jim Larkin, Tom Johnson and others as a means for working people to organise politically, to combat squalor, ignorance, want, idleness and disease. These aspirations remain valid today. Despite Ireland’s economic wealth, class divisions continue to exist and many of its citizens continue to experience, from childhood, major inequalities in wealth, health and life chances. -

From Sarkozy to Hollande: The New Normal? Alistair Cole (Cardiff University, UK), Sophie Meunier (Princeton University, US) and Vincent Tiberj (Sciences Po, Paris, France Paoper presented to the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association, Cardiff, 25-27 March 2013 1 The overall aim of the Developments in series, form which this paper is drawn, is to provide an integrated and systematic assessment of current trends, drawing on the latest research but with sufficient background to make the book accessible for readers without a detailed knowledge of French politics. Two central questions guide the present volume. First, is there still a “French exception”, a uniquely French path to identity and globalization - if there ever was? And second, did the presidencies of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande represent mostly rupture or continuity with French political and cultural traditions? To answer these questions, rather than identifying a single encompassing theme, the book sets out to capture the past decade or so of French politics across five main dimensions: the core political and institutional evolutions; processes of partisanship, citizenship, communication and mediation; political attitudes and elections; domestic policy reforms and the multi-level, regional and international contexts. Though there is no overarching conclusion to this volume, the key approach underpinning most chapters is one of France’s contingent governance --the country caught between converging economic, European and international pressures and the robust defence of a particular model of republican integration. The main purpose of the introductory chapter on which this paper is based is to provide a temporally specific overview that integrates the five dimensions mentioned above and contributes to our understanding of the evolution of the French polity. -

The Parliamentary Dimension of Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the EU Concluding document Over the past six months, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, acting on the basis of their Work Programme of 18 June 2020 and of the Declaration made by the Parliaments of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Portuguese Republic and the Republic of Slovenia on 29 June 2020 on the preparation and running of the parliamentary dimension of the Trio Presidency of the Council of the European Union, have held a total of 12 events and conferences as well as other meetings in special formats with a view to advancing discussions on the main political tasks of the European Union with the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Presidency of the Council and enhancing cooperation between the various political levels in the Union. For the first time in the existence of Council Presidencies and their parliamentary monitoring, the entire programme of events had to be conducted in video format, because the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for direct personal encounters to take place among Members of Parliament and with others in positions of political responsibility. Thanks to the great interest shown in the events and the need for exchanges of views and information as well as discussion on the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social implications as well as on numerous other formidable challenges facing the EU, all of the events have contributed to the efforts to create a stronger Europe after the crisis, to increase the Union’s capacity to act as well as fostering closer cooperation among the parliaments of Europe at this extraordinary time. -

The New European Commission: Is a Circular Org Chart the Same Thing as a Circular Firing Line? September 12, 2019 Summary • Ursula von der Leyen (VdL), Europe’s new Commission President, released her nominees for the next European Commission on September 10. • VdL has called this a “geopolitical” Commission. Efforts to boost Europe’s ability to compete against the U.S. and China, in technology, social media, and industry will be central to the agenda. American tech companies and industrial giants will come under greater scrutiny by a Commission with new powers to regulate the market and competition. • The organization of the new Commission introduces a circular organization chart, with grand titles and unclear lines of reporting. VdL has described it as “balanced” between large and small states, left and right parties, old and new members, and by gender. A balance works only if there is tension between the parts, and there is a risk that policy will be slowed while the pecking order is sorted. Below are a few rules of thumb for understanding power in this Commission. • The Parliament will review the nominations and vote the entire slate up or down by October 31. The new Commission is scheduled to take office on November 1, but delays for a month or more should not be surprising. Discussion VdL’s appointments make several priorities clear: • Climate. First Vice President Frans Timmermans will have responsibility for a “European Green Deal.” This is a far-reaching portfolio in a Commission committed to ambitious carbon reduction. It will touch on every aspect of economic policy and so represents a post of influence for the center left and possibly a point of contention with the liberals and conservatives holding posts for internal market and digital reform. -
French Women's Writing 1900-1938

Bachelor of Arts (UWA) Diploma in Modern Languages (French) (UWA) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities (Discipline-French) 2014 ABSTRACT Overlooked and Overshadowed: French Women’s Writing 1900-1938 This study examines how women in France between 1900 and 1938 (before during and after the Great War) were represented in the writings of four selected women writers - Marcelle Tinayre (1870-1948), Colette Yver (1874-1953), Lucie Delarue-Mardrus (1874-1945) and Marcelle Capy (1891-1962). These authors, fêted in their time have now been largely excluded from contemporary studies on women in early twentieth-century France. The thesis demonstrates how their personal circumstances and the politico-social events of 1900-1938 influenced the way each writer represented women over time, and reveals that women’s writings were not homogenous in theme or in focus. By reading these texts alongside other contemporaneous texts (newspaper articles, reviews and writings by other women), the analyses show that Tinayre, Yver, Delarue-Madrus and Capy challenge and complicate stereotypical perspectives produced mainly by male authors of the same era. Using a longitudinal approach, the study explores each author’s selected texts across three distinct periods - the belle époque, the Great War and the inter-war. Such a reading makes it possible to assess changes in their writing in response to contemporary social and political events in France. By looking at four writers writing across the same era the diversity of women’s lives is also underlined.
