How Big Is Belgium's Love Still for Europe? - the low countries 29/05/2020 21:18 © Trui Chielens Zero Point 1945 SOCIETY HISTORY How Big Is Belgium's Love Still for Europe? By Ellen Vanderschueren, Jasper Praet, Hendrik Vos translated by Elisabeth Salverda 29/05/2020 ! 11 min reading time After the Second World War, Belgium was one of Europe’s founders. Over the years, Belgian politicians have played a prominent role in European politics. There was always a shared feeling among the population that integration with Europe was useful and in the national interest. In recent times, however, this consensus has been somewhat worn down. n 2009, the first President of the European Council to be appointed was a I Belgian, when Herman Van Rompuy became “President of Europe”. Five years later Donald Tusk, a former prime minister of Poland, took over the helm. And five years after that, in 2019, the role fell to a Belgian once more: Charles Michel fit the jigsaw of nominations and was asked by his colleagues to chair the European Council. Belgians have quite often had a steering role in European politics. Belgium was one of the founders of the European project, and has played a very active role over the years in its process of integration. https://www.the-low-countries.com/article/how-big-is-belgiums-love-still-for-europe Pagina 1 van 15 How Big Is Belgium's Love Still for Europe? - the low countries 29/05/2020 21:18 Herman Van Rompuy and Charles Michel, the first and current President of the European Council Much has changed over the past seventy years: the Community with a focus on coal and steel has grown into a European Union that plays a significant role in almost all economic and political spheres. -

Our mission is to develop innovative research, policy advice, training and debates to inspire and inform progressive politics and policies across Europe. We operate as hub for thinking to facilitate the emergence of progressive answers to the chal- lenges that Europe faces today. FEPS works in close partnership with its members and partners, forging connections and boosting coherence among stakeholders from the world of politics, academia and civil society at local, regional, national, European and global levels. Today FEPS benefits from a solid network of 68 member organisations. Among these, 43 are full members, 20 have observer status and 5 are ex-of- ficio members. In addition to this network of organisations that are active in the promotion of progressive values, FEPS also has an extensive network of partners, including renowned universities, scholars, policymakers and activists. Our ambition is to undertake intellectual reflection for the benefit of the progressive movement, and to promote the founding principles of the EU – freedom, equality, solidarity, democracy, respect of human rights, funda- mental freedoms and human dignity, and respect of the rule of law. -

Neither the Belgian Guild of Air Traffic Controllers (BGATC), nor the Unions representing the Air Traffic Controllers have called for an action, strike or anything else. A circulating letter, which stated that BGATC called for actions, is purely false information and misleading the media and the general public. • Belgocontrol management appears to have deliberately chosen the moment to force a collective agreement for Belgocontrol staff. Given the sensitivity of these unilateral measures and the impact they would have on the individual Air Traffic Controllers at Belgocontrol, the detrimental impact this would have on their ability to provide a safe and efficient service was entirely predictable. • As such, we clearly place the full responsibility for the chaos of the past days with the management of Belgocontrol and the Belgian political system. -
Gender Training for Leaders: the Swedish Gender Coach Program Written by Dr
The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security focuses on the roles and experiences of women in peace and security worldwide through research, global convenings, and strategic partnerships. The Institute seeks to set a course for a more stable, peaceful and just world through evidence-based research on how women strengthen conflict prevention and resolution, foster democratic political transitions, sustain peace, and mitigate humanitarian emergencies. It aims to influence the spheres of diplomacy, security, policy, and academia, and to inspire the next generation of leaders. Housed within the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, the Institute is headed by former U.S. Ambassador for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer. The Institute hosts a series of symposia that aim to improve communications and build closer ties among academics, practitioners, and policymakers. Each event results in a set of Occasional Papers that captures new thinking and important trends, identifies challenges, and maps solutions in various aspects of women, peace and security. This set of three Occasional Papers follows a March 2016 symposium about gender mainstreaming in peace support operations. Alongside this paper, this set includes a brief overview by Briana Mawby, “A Guide to Implementing Equal Opportunity Peacekeeping” by Dr. Sabrina Karim and Dr. Kyle Beardsley, and “Policy Tensions Related to Gender and Peacekeeping: The Need for a Two- Level Game” by Dr. Margaret Jenkins. China at the Gates a New Power Audit of Eu-China Relations
CHINA AT THE GATES A NEW POWER AUDIT OF EU-CHINA RELATIONS François Godement & Abigaël Vasselier ABOUT ECFR The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is the first pan-European think-tank. Launched in October 2007, its objective is to conduct research and promote informed debate across Europe on the development of coherent, effective and values- based European foreign policy. ECFR has developed a strategy with three distinctive elements that define its activities: • A pan-European Council. ECFR has brought together a distinguished Council of over two hundred Members - politicians, decision makers, thinkers and business people from the EU’s member states and candidate countries - which meets once a year as a full body. Through geographical and thematic task forces, members provide ECFR staff with advice and feedback on policy ideas and help with ECFR’s activities within their own countries. The Council is chaired by Carl Bildt, Emma Bonino and Mabel van Oranje. • A physical presence in the main EU member states. ECFR, uniquely among European think-tanks, has offices in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Sofia and Warsaw. Our offices are platforms for research, debate, advocacy and communications. • Developing contagious ideas that get people talking. ECFR has brought together a team of distinguished researchers and practitioners from all over Europe to carry out innovative research and policy development projects with a pan-European focus. ECFR produces original research; publishes policy reports; hosts private meetings, public debates, and “friends of ECFR” gatherings in EU capitals; and reaches out to strategic media outlets. ECFR is a registered charity funded by the Open Society Foundations and other generous foundations, individuals and corporate entities. -

The Parliamentary Dimension of Germany's Presidency of The
The Parliamentary Dimension of Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the EU Concluding document Over the past six months, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, acting on the basis of their Work Programme of 18 June 2020 and of the Declaration made by the Parliaments of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Portuguese Republic and the Republic of Slovenia on 29 June 2020 on the preparation and running of the parliamentary dimension of the Trio Presidency of the Council of the European Union, have held a total of 12 events and conferences as well as other meetings in special formats with a view to advancing discussions on the main political tasks of the European Union with the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Presidency of the Council and enhancing cooperation between the various political levels in the Union. For the first time in the existence of Council Presidencies and their parliamentary monitoring, the entire programme of events had to be conducted in video format, because the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for direct personal encounters to take place among Members of Parliament and with others in positions of political responsibility. Thanks to the great interest shown in the events and the need for exchanges of views and information as well as discussion on the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social implications as well as on numerous other formidable challenges facing the EU, all of the events have contributed to the efforts to create a stronger Europe after the crisis, to increase the Union’s capacity to act as well as fostering closer cooperation among the parliaments of Europe at this extraordinary time. -
The New European Commission: Is a Circular Org Chart the Same Thing As a Circular Firing Line? September 12, 2019
The New European Commission: Is a Circular Org Chart the Same Thing as a Circular Firing Line? September 12, 2019 Summary • Ursula von der Leyen (VdL), Europe’s new Commission President, released her nominees for the next European Commission on September 10. • VdL has called this a “geopolitical” Commission. Efforts to boost Europe’s ability to compete against the U.S. and China, in technology, social media, and industry will be central to the agenda. American tech companies and industrial giants will come under greater scrutiny by a Commission with new powers to regulate the market and competition. • The organization of the new Commission introduces a circular organization chart, with grand titles and unclear lines of reporting. VdL has described it as “balanced” between large and small states, left and right parties, old and new members, and by gender. A balance works only if there is tension between the parts, and there is a risk that policy will be slowed while the pecking order is sorted. Below are a few rules of thumb for understanding power in this Commission. • The Parliament will review the nominations and vote the entire slate up or down by October 31. The new Commission is scheduled to take office on November 1, but delays for a month or more should not be surprising. Discussion VdL’s appointments make several priorities clear: • Climate. First Vice President Frans Timmermans will have responsibility for a “European Green Deal.” This is a far-reaching portfolio in a Commission committed to ambitious carbon reduction. It will touch on every aspect of economic policy and so represents a post of influence for the center left and possibly a point of contention with the liberals and conservatives holding posts for internal market and digital reform. -
Megafoner Och Cocktailpartyn
