He gave me the opportunity to study in Portugal and has selflessly supported me in everything. i Abstract Anime (or Japanese animation) is, beyond question, a global phenomenon. Many of the anime series/films are dubbed and subbed worldwide. Thanks to technological advances, people are often given the choice between dubbed and subtitled versions of animated content on DVD, BluRay, and online video streaming services like Netflix. In Portugal, anime is commonly translated using English as a pivot language. This work focuses on the Oscar-winning animated feature film Spirited Away as a case study and analyzes the translations of three types of Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECR) - honorifics, characters’ names and religious references - in the English subtitling and dubbing, as well as in their Portuguese counterparts. The objective of this analysis is to shed light on the predominant translation strategies used in the dubbings and the subtitles of the film and the effect of a pivot translation on the Portuguese version. We compare the original Japanese dialogue to the English subtitles and dubbing, as well as the English subtitles (the pivot text) to the Portuguese subtitles and dubbing. The result of the analysis indicates that the predominant translation strategies for the ECRs in the Japanese to English dubbing and subtitling are target-oriented except for the case of characters’ names; on the contrary, it is source-oriented in the English to Portuguese subtitling

    Clare Domenico Olsen T/RS 25 May 2020 Spirited Away Anime has been an important part of many people’s culture. From shows like Pokemon and Naruto, to movies like Your Name and A Silent Voice. Personally, I do not watch a lot of anime in my time, but one of my favorite movies of all time is called Spirited Away, which is by the world famous director, Hayao Miyazaki, who owns the company Studio Ghibli. If i were to compare Miyazaki to somebody else, I would compare him to Walt Disney, since if you think about it, with his ratings and reviews, Miyazaki is basically the Walt Disney of Japan. His movies are filled with beautiful sceneries, music scores that will give you chills, and a story that will impact the viewer in every way, shape, and form. Every single one of the movies that this company brings out to the public is loved and cherished by many. Some, like the movie Totoro and Ponyo, are funny and light-hearted. Other movies by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, like Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle, are more serious, and are better watched by an older audience so they can understand the main point and plot of the movie. One of my favorite movies by this company and director is called Spirited Away. Spirited Away was the first ever Studio Ghibli film I watched when I was a kid, and after watching it, I was hooked. The colors, sounds, and scenery were something at which I have never seen before in my life, and it drew me into the story and message it tries to obtain the viewer to have.

After that Iʼll talk about some notable recent papers and finally offer a few thoughts about the future. 1 Defining the problem 2 Historical highlights 3 Some recent papers 4 Thoughts on the future Defining the problem Weʼll take facial animation to be the process of turning a characterʼs speech and emotional state into facial poses and motion. (This might extend to motion of the whole head.) Included here is the problem of modeling the form and articulation of an expressive head. There are some related topics that we wonʼt consider today. Autonomous characters require behavioral models to determine what they might feel or say. Hand and body gestures are often used alongside facial animation. Faithful animation of hair and rendering of skin can greatly enhance the animation of a face. Defining the problem This is a tightly defined problem, but solving it is difficult. We are intimately aware of how human faces should look, and sensitive to subtleties in the form and motion. Lip and mouth shapes donʼt correspond to individual sounds, but are context-dependent. These are further affected by the emotions of the speaker and by the language being spoken. Many different parts of the face and head work together to convey meaning. Facial anatomy is both structurally and physically complex: there are many layers of different kinds of material (skin, fat, muscle, bones). Data of this article is obtained from the English novel namely Murder in the Orient Express by Agatha Christie and its Indonesian translation. This article concluded that out of 100 data, 57 data uses loan and 47 data uses calque. Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R.
