Mike Mullen is the first Joint Chiefs chairman to speak at an Air Force Academy gradua- tion ceremony in the Academy’s 55-year history. “Let me be among the first to congratulate you and thank you, Class of 2010,” said Admiral Mullen, who has previously served as chief and vice chief of naval operations and commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe. “While I’m at it, let me take this opportunity to thank ... fathers and mothers, brothers, sisters and grandparents, who I know have been incredibly supportive and loving over the course of these four years, and indeed, over the course of your entire lives.” The admiral thanked the staff and faculty of the Academy for their role in developing today’s second lieutenants and congratulated 2nd Lt. Brittany Morreale for earning a Rhodes Scholarship. “I’ll bet many in the staff here would love to hear from all of you graduates in the future - and after spending four years with you, they’d also like you to know that by ‘the future,’ they mean at least four years from now when they’ve recovered,” Admiral Mullen joked. • The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.

Thank you for sending your children to Lincoln Lutheran and thank you for your generous support through volunteering and financial support. The last year saw an increase in the number of students, many hours of volunteering that allowed events to happen, and a very successful year of financial support. A few of the successes during the past year: • Large attendance for Grandparent’s Day • Successful and fun golf tournament • Over 800 in attendence for all Lutheran School chapel during National Lutheran Schools Week • Large attendance and financial support through the annual Gala • Great start to the Now Through Eternity campaign resulting in: o Growth in scholarship endowments o Additional debt reduction o Tuition increase for 2017-18 is the lowest since 2001 o Construction of a multi-use building will begin in September 2017 The one question that I am frequently asked is “How can you ask people for money?” To tell you the truth it is not hard at all when you believe in the product you are “selling”. I believe in Lincoln Lutheran and the Christ-centered education received by students. My job is to “plant the seed” by telling the story and the Holy Spirit does the work in the hearts of people that hear the story and experience Lincoln Lutheran. My prayer for this next school year is to meet more of the special people that make Lincoln Lutheran what it is today and together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of young men and women, Today, Tomorrow, and Forever.
