IRB protocol # ____________________ ii Daly, Meaghan Elizabeth (Ph.D., Environmental Studies) Co-production and the Politics of Usable Knowledge for Climate Adaptation in Tanzania Thesis directed by Dr. Lisa Dilling and Dr. Mara Goldman ABSTRACT The concept of ‘co-production’ is increasingly offered as an approach to enable more responsive and inclusive processes of knowledge production across a range of disciplines. While it is recognized that uneven power relations play a significant role in shaping co-production processes, how these dynamics affect, and are affected by, intentional efforts to ‘co-produce’ usable knowledge is not well understood. In this dissertation, I examine the multiple ways in which power is exercised within efforts to ‘co-produce knowledge’ for climate adaptation decision-making in Tanzania, and with what effect. I do so through a multi-scalar mixed methods case study. -

Systemy kierowania Piotr Sienkiewicz ur. w 1945 r. w Karpaczu. Ukończył studia na Wydziale Cybernetyki Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej. W 1975 r. uzyskał stopień doktora nauk technicznych, a w 1980 r. doktora habilitowanego. Od 1986 r. jest profesorem nadzwyczajnym nauk wojskowych w Akademii Sztabu Generalnego WP. Aktywnie uczestniczy w pracach Polskiego Towarzystwa Cybernetycznego, od 1988 r. pełni funkcję prezesa Zarzqdu Głównego. Jest członkiem Towarzystwa Naukowego Orqanizacii i Kierownictwa, Polskiego Towarzystwa Badań Operacyjnych i Systemowych. Laureat I Nagrody im. K. Adamieckiego w konkursie na najlepszą pracę w dziedzinie organizacji i kierowania (1988). Autor wielu prac naukowych i popularnonaukowych poświęconych cybernetyce, informatyce, analizie systemowej, organizacji i kierowaniu. Do ważniejszych prac należą: Inżynieria systemów (1983), Dowodzenie z komputerem (współautor) 1985, Teoria efektywności systemów (1987), Poszukiwanie Golema czyli 0 cybernetyce i cybernetykach (1988), Inżynieria systemów kierowania (1938). Żyjemy w świecie systemów i dlatego dążymy do tworzenia całościowych obrazów otaczającego nas świata. Jesteśmy uwikłani w różnorodne działania, których bywamy podmiotami lub przedmiotami, albo też jednym 1 drugim. Działania sterujące zwiemy kierowaniem. Kierujemy działaniami innych ludzi, zaś przez innych jesteśmy kierowani — kierujemy także swoim rozwojem. NEGATIVLAND_FMT.DOC 02/25/03 2:08 PM TWO RELATIONSHIPS TO A CULTURAL PUBLIC DOMAIN NEGATIVLAND* INTRODUCTION It’s been well over ten years since Negativland was sued by Island Records for supposed copyright infringement, trademark infringement, defamation of character and consumer fraud contained in our 1991 U2 single. In the big wide world of the ownership of ideas, a lot has changed since then—the advent of the Internet and its worldwide empowerment of individuals through personalized interconnection, the effects of economic globalization and how it bypasses both the ideologies of local governments and the rule of their national laws, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act with which intellectual property owners are attempting to survive as all these rugs are being pulled out from under them. There is a contemporary realization that, on one hand, the fate of all content is now in the hands of its receiving audience more than ever before, and, on the other hand, that worldwide commerce is scrambling to forge all kinds of new laws and regulations to maintain their traditional control over the fate of “their” content. Over the last decade, Negativland has continued to be associated with these issues, sometimes because we volunteer ideas on these subjects, sometimes because we continue to make art that ends up evoking them. Other than the two lawsuits against us in the wake of the U2 single, we’ve never been sued again. There have been other scares, skirmishes, and threats against us over the years, at various times from the Recording Industry Association of America, PepsiCo, Beck, Geffen Records, Philip Glass, Fat Boy Slim, the CD pressing plants we work with, and even attorneys for ax murderer David Brom. -
