A poesia não está de maneira alguma excluída, mas o objetivo aqui é muito mais engendrar novos ângulos sobre as coisas tratadas do que se reduzir a uma definição meramente didática.     NEGATIVLAND_FMT.DOC 02/25/03 2:08 PM TWO RELATIONSHIPS TO A CULTURAL PUBLIC DOMAIN NEGATIVLAND* INTRODUCTION It’s been well over ten years since Negativland was sued by Island Records for supposed copyright infringement, trademark infringement, defamation of character and consumer fraud contained in our 1991 U2 single. In the big wide world of the ownership of ideas, a lot has changed since then—the advent of the Internet and its worldwide empowerment of individuals through personalized interconnection, the effects of economic globalization and how it bypasses both the ideologies of local governments and the rule of their national laws, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act with which intellectual property owners are attempting to survive as all these rugs are being pulled out from under them. There is a contemporary realization that, on one hand, the fate of all content is now in the hands of its receiving audience more than ever before, and, on the other hand, that worldwide commerce is scrambling to forge all kinds of new laws and regulations to maintain their traditional control over the fate of “their” content. Over the last decade, Negativland has continued to be associated with these issues, sometimes because we volunteer ideas on these subjects, sometimes because we continue to make art that ends up evoking them. Other than the two lawsuits against us in the wake of the U2 single, we’ve never been sued again. There have been other scares, skirmishes, and threats against us over the years, at various times from the Recording Industry Association of America, PepsiCo, Beck, Geffen Records, Philip Glass, Fat Boy Slim, the CD pressing plants we work with, and even attorneys for ax murderer David Brom.

Earls..................... représentant du doyen Abstract The goal of this dissertation is to understand conceptualizations of risk among homeless youth. In particular, it strived to examine an identified "at-risk" group's understanding of risk. Risk in this study encompassed all notions of risk, and was not limited to a narrow definition of perceived harm, but also embraced references of opportunities or chances taken. In this light, this study employed an ethnographic approach to better understand the worlds of homeless youth, relying on participant observation and informal interviewing methods. This ontological approach hoped to capture how youth conceptualize their personal power in estimating, managing, and avoiding or embracing risk. Coupling social constructionism with symbolic interactionism, this study explored participant's understandings of risk in the contexts in which they found and understood themselves. Participant's evolving identities greatly impacted their perceptions of risk and subsequently, their management strategies.

    # Chapter 1: Hope The Woodstock Nation, as the young counter-culture has been called, receives its information largely from under- ground radio stations, from television, and from the cin- ema. And since English teachers agree that we learn to communicate by imitation . why not ask the student to express himself in the way he is most often communicated to? By the time he reaches college composition class, he has already learned the language and the techniques of visual communication. Therefore, an alternative to written com- position classes . is obviously the filmmaking class. (Rich- ard Williamson, 1971, “The Uses for Filmmaking as English Composition”) Professor Bond introduced the workshop by stating that he found the first twenty years of CCCC boring, though he had attended faithfully and had wanted to enjoy the meetings. Now he feels that a workshop on film promises that we are on the threshold of something big and important and differ- ent. (Martha Heasley Cox, 1969, Recorder, CCCC Workshop Reports) We research a question, hoping to support our hunches, the graspy sense of value we attach to our work. Often, we struggle. Sometimes, we find leads that trace a coherent line through vibratory invention fields. Sometimes, we find that someone has been there before, not in a vague whispery way, but in a way that says, “I’ve always been after what you are now about.” In this latter scenario, one might be disappointed, move on to new ideas, seeking the hot young thing that will leave its shiny mark. Alternatively, in this “been there” scenario, we might also find that the earlier gesture was—while charmingly affect-laden and hopeful—somewhat less than ideally complete in its rhetor- ical validity, less than fully supported but nonetheless worthy of publication because of its passion and hope and desire.
