PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL APPRECIATES THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF OUR SPONSORS WELCOME

It was an immensely pleasant surprise to have been asked to curate Portland Piano International’s 2019 / 2020 season, and I consider it a very special privilege to have been entrusted with its programming. This has been a chance for me to present artists I truly believe in, and to build upon the wisdom of Harold Gray over his many years as Artistic Director.

I am very excited to be sharing the artistry of this season’s pianists with the public, each of whom has a unique and stirring aesthetic vision. Given that the field of pianists is a very populous one, and brimming with different personalities and musical outlooks, the selection was bound to be difficult − one naturally wants to include everybody! But I can honestly say that the Portland audience will experience something stimulating and extremely diversified.

I am particularly glad to have the possibility of introducing pianists such as Imogen Cooper and Jonathan Plowright, who are not heard enough on this continent. I consider them to be among the most refined artists from the other side of the pond. American audiences will be more familiar with the probing performances of Inon Barnatan and the electrifying energy of the Anderson & Roe Piano Duo. I’ve listened to both time and again with the greatest pleasure.

And finally, I’m thrilled to have Portland discover Dasol Kim’s playing. From the moment I first heard him in 2017 at the Cliburn competition, I had no doubt that a great future lay ahead of him.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to Ellen Bergstone Wasil and Maryellen McCulloch, who gave me this opportunity, and with whom I’ve thoroughly enjoyed collaborating.

Welcome one and all to piano paradise!

NOTEWORTHY A prolific, award-winning recording artist, Mr. Hamelin is also a sought-after composer. YOU'RE KNOWN FOR CHAMPIONING OBSCURE WORKS, WHAT INSPIRED YOU? My father was always playing the piano in the house from my earliest days; he was a very good amateur pianist and also played a lot of records at home ... he was very curious about finding ‘important’ piano compositions that were less mainline and often forgotten. We essentially explored these together; he was often ordering new scores of unfamiliar composers and, even “Hamelin’s legend will grow - right now from a very young age, I would there is no one like him.”
