Luigi Giussani is well-known as the founder of Communion and Liberation and the author of numerous books, including The Religious Sense. But what is less understood about him is how he broke through the conventional opposition between liberalism and traditionalism, and proposed Christianity in a way that answers the challenges of modernity to the Christian faith. -

Richard Veras for the first of our annual series on the life and thought of Luigi Giussani, founder of the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation. Tonight’s gathering is an occasion to delve more deeply into the contents of a fundamental concept of Christianity: the “encounter,” as understood and taught by Fr. Giussani. Born in 1922 in Desio, Italy, Giussani described his childhood as “poor in bread but rich in music.” He began the path of his priestly vocation at the tender age of 10, and those formative years were filled with encounters that marked his life. -

MY HEART IS GLAD BECAUSE YOU LIVE, OH CHRIST Spiritual Exercises of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation Rimini, April 28, 2017
MY HEART IS GLAD BECAUSE YOU LIVE, OH CHRIST Spiritual Exercises of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation Rimini, April 28, 2017 Notes from the Introduction by Julián Carrón “Let not your prayer be a mechanical exercise,” Fr. Giussani told us. Therefore, “let us elevate our awareness, let us reawaken our responsibility! […] The whole world is as if under this leaden pall that is the forgetfulness of the reason one wakes up in the morning, takes things up again, takes oneself in hand again. The impact that all things have on the human person is to say: ‘Wake up […]’. […] My God, how this redemption of every morning should be! But instead, an oppressive forgetfulness is what normally disqualifies our days from the beginning, even if they are then full of activity. […] When we gather together, we do so to look again toward the light […] [to shake off this forgetfulness, to] not allow the person near us to cry, alone and without a horizon. […] In this way, in this moment, our head can emerge from the normal fog that usually covers it: we re-gain awareness, resume our responsibility for ourselves and for things, for love of ourselves and for love of the sun, for love of ourselves and for love of people. […] It is up to us that this companionship be awake in the world and subsist, this possibility of companionship that abolishes the isolation between me and you, between one person and another person, and enables things to be useful, enables time to be useful.”1 Let us ask with all the awareness of which we are capable. -

This prayer teaches us all about God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It is so special because we believe the very same things about God that the Apostles did, even though they lived over 2,000 years ago. believe in God, I the Father almighty , Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. -
Theological Qua.Rterly
THEOLOGICAL QUA.RTERLY. VoL. XXI. JULY, 1917. No. 3. WHY DO CATHOLICS ACCEPT THE DEITY OF CHRIST? During the last two weeks of the Sunday campaign in Boston a small tract, or pamphlet, was distributed by mail, apparently by courtesy of the "Massachusetts State Council, K of 0./' since it was published by them, as stated on the title page. The tract is entitled "The Divinity of Christ," with the further information: "One of a Series of Lectures on the Fundamentals of Faith, Delivered. in the Brooklyn Academy of Music before the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, by Rev. Walter Drum, S. J., Professor of Scripture, Woodstock College. Imprimi Potest: A. J. Maas, S. J., Praep. Prov." On the second page we read: "Nihil Obstat: Patrick J. Waters, Ph.' D., Censor Librorum." Below this: "Imprimatur: William, Cardinal O'Connell, Archbishop of Boston. November 2, 1916." The tract is officially censored and sanctioned, as you see. From a footnote on page three we gather that this lecture was delivered in December, 1915. N ~turally, the tract was read from· cover to cover to ascertain if perchance there might be something new under the ,Jesuit luminary. But herein we were disappointed, which was to be expected. , It is the same sleight-of-hand perform . ance that these Jesuits, those brilliant logicians, have always practised to the confusion of their audiences. On receipt of the tract one ,~as led to speculate, too, why these courteous Knights of Columbus distributed this tract at this p~rticular time. Perhaps it was "Billy" Sunday's fervent and enthusi- 9 130 WHY DO CATHOLICS ACCEP'.I.'
