communion and liberation Via Porpora, 127 – 20131 Milan, Italy – Tel. +39 02/28174440 – Fax +39 02/28174442 PRESS OFFICE [email protected] 22nd February 2012: request to initiate the cause for Father Giussani’s beatification and canonisation On 22nd February 2012, at the end of the Holy Mass celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Scola in the Cathedral of Milan for the 30th anniversary of the Pontifical Decree of Recognition of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation and the 7th anniversary of Father Luigi Giussani’s death, Father Julián Carrón, President of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation, announced that a request to begin the cause for Father Giussani’s beatification and canonisation has been presented to Archbishop of Milan. The request was submitted on 22nd February 2012 (Fr. Giussani’s anniversary and Solemnity of the Chair of St. Peter), through the postulator named by the President of the Fraternity appointed as petitioner of the Cause: Professor Chiara Minelli, Lecturer of Canon and Ecclesiastical Law at the Università degli Studi of Brescia. The request has been made to the Archbishop of Milan – in whose Diocese Father Giussani, a diocesan priest, was born, lived and worked – in accordance with the Apostolic Constitution Divinus Perfectionis Magister, 25.I.1983, the Normae servandae in inquisitionibus ab Episcopis faciendis in causis sanctorum dated 7.II.1983, nos.11-15, and the Instructio Sanctorum Mater, 17.V.2007, Part II, Title I, art. 25 § 1 and 2. The petitioner asked the Archbishop to open the Diocesan Informative Inquiry into the life, the virtues and the reputation of Sanctity of Monsignor Luigi Giussani. Giving the news, don Carrón prays that “Our Lady - ‘living fountain of hope’ - help us every day to be made worthy of the promises of Christ and of the immense grace that we received and are still receiving in the charism of Father Giussani”. Giussani told us. Therefore, “let us elevate our awareness, let us reawaken our responsibility! […] The whole world is as if under this leaden pall that is the forgetfulness of the reason one wakes up in the morning, takes things up again, takes oneself in hand again. The impact that all things have on the human person is to say: ‘Wake up […]’. […] My God, how this redemption of every morning should be! But instead, an oppressive forgetfulness is what normally disqualifies our days from the beginning, even if they are then full of activity. […] When we gather together, we do so to look again toward the light […] [to shake off this forgetfulness, to] not allow the person near us to cry, alone and without a horizon. […] In this way, in this moment, our head can emerge from the normal fog that usually covers it: we re-gain awareness, resume our responsibility for ourselves and for things, for love of ourselves and for love of the sun, for love of ourselves and for love of people. The Holy See LETTER OF JOHN PAUL II TO MSGR. LUIGI GIUSSANI ON THE OCCASION OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOVEMENT "COMMUNION AND LIBERATION" To Rev. Mons. Luigi Giussani, Founder of the Movement "Communion and Liberation" 1. It will be 50 years in October since you stopped lecturing at the theological faculty of the Seminary at Venegono and began to teach religion in Milan at Berchet Secondary School. This was how you came to set out on the way to an ecclesial association that was subsequently to become the Movement, and later, also the Fraternity of "Communion and Liberation". I gladly join you in the surge of gratitude to God, the Giver of every good thing, that wells up in your priestly heart and in the hearts of the Movement's members on this anniversary. In this half century, divine Providence has brought to life an institution which, spreading rapidly in Italy and throughout the world, has yielded an abundant harvest of good for the Church and for society. Today the Movement exists in 70 countries and offers a faith experience that can take root in the most varied cultures; it is an experience that profoundly changes people's lives since it impels them to a personal encounter with Christ. "Communion and Liberation" is a Movement that together with a whole range of other associations and new communities can rightly be considered one of the new shoots of the promising "springtime" inspired by the Holy Spirit in these past 50 years. This half century has been distinguished by a harsh clash with the dominant ideologies in a crisis of utopian projects, and more recently, by a widespread tendency to relativism, scepticism and nihilism that risks dampening the hopes and aspirations of the new generations.

Conservative CATHOLIC INFLUENCE IN EUROPE AN INVESTIGATIVE SERIES The Vatican and Family Politics In many ways it is counterintuitive, even troubling, to characterise the role of the Vatican in international politics as “conservative.” This is the church that has called for the forgiveness of third world debt by first world nations, that played a powerful role in the collapse of repressive regimes in Eastern Europe, that defends the rights of immigrants, and that often, though not always, is an eloquent spokesperson for human rights. In regard to these values and areas of public policy, the Roman Catholic church is to be applauded for the role it has played, but the scope of public policy has changed dramatically during the last decade. Increasingly, public policy focuses on what traditionally was considered the private sphere: women’s rights and social role; human reproduction; sexual rights, including those of homosexual persons; marriage, divorce, and family life. These issues are on the public agenda constantly, at international as well as national levels. In these forums, the teachings and worldview of the Catholic church often collide with the more pluralistic and tolerant perspectives of most governments, international institutions, and individuals. While the church historically has sought a convergence between its teachings and public policy, its own Second Vatican Council, which three decades ago redefined the role of the church in the modern world,1 recognised the distinct roles played by church and state and acknowledged that state policy need not mirror church teachings in order to be legitimate.
